Construction of new Algerian plant imminent 02 April 2015
Algeria: The construction works of an Algerian-South African cement plant with a capacity of 2.2Mt/yr will begin shortly, according to Abdelkrim Mansouri, Director General of the Algerian National Development Agency for Investment (NDAI). "All administrative procedures have now been finalised and the initiators of this project will start the work of constructing the plant shortly," he said.
This project is the result of a partnership between Hodna Algerian Cement Company and leading South African cement producer PPC, concluded in accordance with rules that stipulate a maximum 49% ownership by foreign firms in Algerian-based investments. At a total cost of US$287m, the plant will be 80% financed by Algerian banks and 20% financed by the two joint venture partners.
Zambia/China: Chinese firms have made a commitment to accelerate investment in Zambia under agreements valued at a combined US$800m. The deal was signed by the Zambia-China Economic and Trade Cooperation Zone and 11 companies in Beijing. One of the 11 Chinese firms is West China Cement Ltd, which will set up a cement plant in the zone.
"Zambia hopes to attract more Chinese investors and tourists to improve economic development," said Zambian president Edgar Lungu, adding that his government will provide 'strong support' to Chinese companies. Zan Baosen, general manager of the zone, said that Zambia offers many incentives to Chinese companies. "We are eager to cooperate with Chinese entrepreneurs to explore the market potential in Zambia," he said.
Switzerland: Holcim's chairman Wolfgang Reitzle has said that Holcim is open to giving Russia's Eurocement a seat on the board after its merger with French peer Lafarge goes through, chairman Wolfgang Reitzle said yesterday.
On 29 March 2015 Russian businessman Filaret Galchev, who owns a 10.8% stake in Holcim via Eurocement Holding, rejected the renegotiated merger terms that Holcim had reached with Lafarge in mid-March.
"It would be beneficial to have him in the board as he would bring in lots of expertise from the cement sector," said Reitzle of Galchev. He added that the future chief executive of the combined company would be named within the next two weeks.
Reitzle excluded re-opening the negotiations with Lafarge on the share-exchange ratio or paying a special dividend to Holcim shareholders to win them over to the deal.
Holcim shareholders, some of whom remain sceptical of the cement industry mega-merger, vote on whether or not to ratify the deal at a shareholder meeting on Friday 8 May 2015.
