Redouane Djazairi appointed as plant manager by Lafarge Algeria
22 February 2023Algeria: Lafarge Algeria has appointed Redouane Djazairi as a plant manager. He has worked for the subsidiary of Holcim for nearly 20 years in a variety of quality control and performance roles. Most recently he held the position of Production Manager. The cement producer operates two integrated plants in the country, at M'Sila and Oggaz respectively.
Lafarge Algeria signs agreement with National Centre for Cleaner Production Technologies
28 December 2022Algeria: The National Centre for Cleaner Production Technologies (CNTPP) has signed a cooperation agreement with Lafarge Algeria. The arrangement is intended to provide government assistance towards producing cement more sustainably at the manufacturer’s plants, according to Le Quotidien d'Oran newspaper. The CNTPP is an organisation setup by the Ministry of Environment to support industrial and commercial companies.
Lafarge Algeria launches Chamil reduced-CO2 cement
22 September 2022Algeria: Lafarge Algeria has launched Chamil cement, a 40% reduced-CO2 cement, which contains locally sourced clay and ferrous materials. The producer developed Chamil cement based on technology from the Rouiba Construction Development Laboratory.
Lafarge Algeria aims to achieve export volumes of 3Mt across its product range in 2022.
Lafarge Algeria exports 2.6Mt of cement in 2021
23 February 2022Algeria: Lafarge Algeria says it exported 2.6Mt of cement in 2021, more than double the 1.18Mt it exported in 2020. It aims to export over 3Mt in 2022. The subsidiary of Holcim also announced that it will carry out two new large simultaneous shipments from the port of Oran, one of 35,000t of cement in bulk, and the other of 30,000t of white cement in big bags. Both shipments will be exported to the Americas.
Algerian cement truckers protest loading law change
21 February 2022Algeria: Some cement truck drivers have launched protests against a change in the law which limits their vehicles’ loads below the previous maximum weight. The L’Expression newspaper reports that protests include refusals to depart and the establishment of roadblocks. The actions have prevented the export of some Algerian clinker. Lafarge Algérie said that it raised drivers’ pay per tonne of goods following the law change. The company stated that the new level of pay ensures that transporters will not lose out as a result.
Algeria is targeting cement and clinker exports of 10Mt in 2022.
Lafarge Algeria exceeds 2Mt of cement exports
10 November 2021Algeria: Lafarge Algeria announced that it had exported a total of 2Mt of cement on 9 October 2021 from the start of its operations in 2016. Horizons News has reported that the company exported 0.8Mt of cement in the first nine months of 2021, more than double that in the corresponding period of 2020. It aims to exceed 2.5Mt of cement exports by the start of 2022. Its target for 2022 is full-year cement exports of 2.6Mt, double its 2021 target of 1.3Mt.
Algeria: Lafarge Algeria says it plans to focus on exports and roads in 2018. Serge Dubois, director of public relations at the company, said that it intends to export 5Mt or 30% of the market by 2020, according to the El Watan newspaper. The cement producer has already conducted seven export operations since Decemebr 2017 to West Africa. The other priority is to encourage the use of cement in local infrastructure, incuding road expansion plans.
CILAS Biskra cement plant starts production
09 August 2016Algeria: The CILAS Bikra cement plant started production in mid-July 2016, 11 days before the scheduled start of operations. The 2.7Mt/yr plant is a joint venture between Lafarge Algeria and Souakri Group. The project had an investment of Euro270m and it took 21 months to build, according to Le Matin newspaper.
Algeria: CILAS, a joint operation between Lafarge Algeria (49% stake) and Souakri Group (51% stake) located in the northeast of the country, has started commissioned its mill at its Biskra cement plant. Operation of the site’s kiln is scheduled to start in July 2016 according to the El Watan newspaper.
China’s CBM, a subsidiairy of Sinoma, signed a deal to build the plant in mid-2014. The engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract included design, equipment supply, civil construction, installation, training and commissioning of the project. The plant will have a cement production capacity of 2.7Mt/yr when fully operational.
Lafarge Algeria cement plant to start production in 2016
26 November 2015Algeria: A US$277m joint venture cement plant between Lafarge Algeria (51%) and Algeria's Souakri (49%) in Biskra will start operations in 2016.
The Director of Public Affairs and Communications at Lafarge Algeria, Serge Dubois, said that the plant, which will produce 2.7Mt/yr of cement, will raise the group's overall production to more than 11Mt/yr. Lafarge Algeria currently has two cement plants in M'sila and Oggaz with 8.7Mt/yr of capacity. It also holds the 1Mt/yr Meftah cement plant in partnership with Algeria (GICA).
