Green Building Council of South Africa appoints new chairman
21 January 2015South Africa: The Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA) has appointed Seana Nkhahle from the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) as its new Chairman. Nkhahle takes over the reins from long-time Chairman Bruce Kerswill, who played a leading role in the formation of the council.
The GBCSA was established in 2007 to promote green building development in the country. It is a member of the World Green Building Council (World GBC) and is today one of the most active councils worldwide.
Nkhahle is an Executive Director at SALGA, responsible for 'Corporate Strategy and Research.' Prior to this, he was the Executive Manager and National Programmes Co-ordinator at the South African Cities Network from 2005 to 2009. In 2004, Nkhahle received a recognition award issued jointly by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology and the Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction.
Jacques Bourgon resigns from Holcim
10 December 2014Switzerland: Holcim Group has announced that Jacques Bourgon, its current head of occupational health and safety, senior advisor to the CEO and senior manager has decided to resign from the group to pursue challenges outside Holcim. He will leave on 31 December 2014. Holcim thanked Jacques Bourgon for his valuable contributions over his 24 years at the company.
MAM Ramaswamy removed from Chettinad board
03 September 2014India: The succession battle within the Chettinad group of companies has culminated in the removal of chairman MAM Ramaswamy from the board of its flagship enterprise, a position he has held for more than three decades.
A resolution to reappoint Ramaswamy was defeated at the 51st shareholders meeting of the Chettinad Cement Corporation on 27 August 2014. However, Ramaswamy was later named as chairman emeritus by his foster son and managing director MAMR Muthiah, who has taken over the reins.
An official statement from the group said, "In acknowledgement of his contribution at the helm of the company's operations until 1999, the managing director announced that Ramaswamy would be appointed as chairman emeritus for life."
Muthiah, who has powered the group's expansion over the last decade in cement, healthcare and logistics, has instilled a managerial culture that is in sharp contrast to the conservative approach favoured by Ramaswamy. Muthiah has announced that the group would push itself into newer geographies in north India. Currently all of the group's cement assets are located in the south.
Directors shuffle in Tunisia
03 September 2014Tunisia: Jalel Ben Othmane has been appointed Director General of Ciments de Bizerte in replacement of Ibrahim Sanaa who in turn has been appointed Director General of the Carthage Cement.
JK Cement’s director dies
06 August 2014India: The director of JK Cement, Shri Jagendra Swarup, passed away on 30 July 2014. His replacement is expected to be announced shortly.
Papadopoulos announces retirement from Titan America
16 April 2014US: Titan Group has announced that after 20 years at the helm of Titan America, Aris Papadopoulos will retire from the position of CEO, effective 1 August 2014. According to a release, he will become Executive Chairman of ST Equipment & Technologies (STET), reporting to the Group CEO and also serve as an advisor.
The company noted that, commencing with a 1994 joint venture with Roanoke Cement, Papadopoulos led Titan America through a growth trajectory that included the acquisition of Tarmac America and Separation Technologies, modernising the company's two cement plants, numerous operational expansions and multiple concrete acquisitions.
"During Aris' tenure, Titan America grew from a cement joint-venture in Roanoke, Virginia, to the pre-eminent East Coast construction materials producer," said Dimitri Papalexopoulos, CEO of Titan Group. "Aris, more than anyone else, has shaped Titan America over two decades."
Bill Zarkalis, Group CFO since 2010, will succeed Papadopoulos. Zarkalis joined the Group in 2008 as Director of Business Development. He previously held executive positions at Dow Chemical. As CEO-designate, he will work closely with Papadopoulos to ensure a smooth transition. Michael Colakides will become Group CFO, effective 16 May 2014. Colakides recently returned to the Group as Senior Strategy Advisor after more than a decade in several banking industry executive roles.
Hilal Cement appoints new board member

Nicolas Valdinoci becomes director of Lafarge Moldova
19 March 2014Moldova: Nicolas Valdinoci has become the new director of Lafarge Moldova. He replaces Louis de Sambucy who has moved to Lafarge Algeria. Valdinoci worked for three years in Lafarge's department of strategy and in 2010 he became the financial director of the concrete and aggregates division in Lafarge Algeria. In 2012, he was appointed as deputy director of sales at Lafarge Algeria.
Meesak appointed to new VP Human Resources role at FLSmidth
27 August 2013Denmark: Cement plant manufacturer FLSmidth has announced that Virve Elisabeth Meesak has been appointed to a newly created position in Group Executive Management as Group Executive Vice President, Global Human Resources. She will take up her new position on 1 September 2013. The new role has been created in an effort to effectively strengthen the FLSmidth Group's competitiveness by focusing more on strategic human resource management.
Meesak, 53, is a Swedish citizen and has been an independent Human Resource consultant specialised in change management, leadership training and executive coaching since 2010. Between 2008 and 2010 she was Human Resource Director for Alstom Power Services (North East Europe) and from 2005 to 2008 she held the position of Vice President (Human Resources) at Sandvik Mining and Construction AB. Prior to 2005 Meesak had a number of other vice president roles.
