Ghori Cement restarts production
17 August 2022Afghanistan: Ghori Cement has restarted production at its Baghlan plants near Pul-e-Khumr in Baghlan province after a stoppage of four months. Production halted at the units due to the high price of coal, according to Pajhwok Afghan News. The government is now supplying coal to the plants at a pre-agreed price. Other local news sources report that production has increased to 520t/day from 350t/day previously, following work on a variety of technical issues.
Visaka Industries to build cement board plant in West Bengal
17 August 2022India: Visaka Industries plans to spend US$15m towards building a new fibre cement board plant in the Paschim Medinipur district of West Bengal. The unit will be the company’s fifth cement board plant and the first in the state, according to the Press Trust of India. The project will include solar power generation via roof panels.
CalPortland to acquire Tehachapi cement plant
10 August 2022US: Taiheiyo Cement subsidiary CalPortland has concluded a deal with Martin Marietta Materials for the acquisition of the latter's Tehachapi cement plant in California for US$250m. The deal also covers two business centres.
Taiheiyo Cement said "We expect the US cement business to continue to have strong demand from the private sector in view of projected economic growth and chronic housing shortages going forward. Additionally, we expect the infrastructure demands to accelerate as a result of the passing of the more than US$1tn infrastructure investment bill by the US Congress. Further, California is likely to have even greater growth because it will host the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The planned acquisition of Martin Marietta Materials' assets is intended to ensure that we capture this increased demand. It is an essential element in maximising our future corporate value."
India: Gujarat Sidhee Cement has stopped production at its Sidheegram cement plant in Gujarat for at least one week. The producer will use the suspension for repair and maintenance of the plant.
ThyssenKrupp Industries India reveals details of orders with UltraTech Cement, Shree Cement and Hills Cement
10 August 2022India: ThyssenKrupp Industries India has reported information on recent orders with UltraTech Cement, Shree Cement and Hills Cement.
Its Polysius division has secured an order from UltraTech Cement for the design, engineering and supply of two 10,000t/day pyro processing lines with Polycom rolls for raw materials grinding.
Shree Cement has ordered pyro processing equipment including a Polytrack clinker cooler for a new cement plant at Guntur in Andhra Pradesh. ThyssenKrupp Industries India noted that it was the “maiden plant order” from Shree Cement and of “great strategic importance to us.”
Hills Cement has also made a first order with ThyssenKrupp. In this case it has requested pyro processing equipment including a clinker cooler for the second production line at its plant in Meghalaya.
Vietnam: Xuan Tanh Cement plans to commission its upcoming 4.5Mt/yr Ha Nam cement plant in October 2022. Viêt Nam News has reported that the new plant will bring Ha Nam province’s cement capacity to 10Mt/yr.
Vietnam consumed approximately 63.5Mt of cement in 2021.
Golden Bay Cement to review viability of cement production
03 August 2022New Zealand: Golden Bay Cement says that proposed changes to New Zealand's emissions trading scheme (ETS) would force it to review the viability of cement production at its 0.9Mt/yr Portland cement plant in Whangārei, Northland. The Northern Advocate newspaper has reported that the government proposes to reduce the number of ETS credits available to industrial enterprises under free allocation from 2024.Since the scheme's introduction in 2008, highly emissions-intensive businesses such as Golden Bay Cement have enjoyed 90% free allocation of ETS credits for their emissions.
Çimsa Çimento completes divestment of plants to Fernas Group
03 August 2022Turkey: Çimsa Çimento has completed the divestment of its 1Mt/yr Kayseri and 1.2Mt/yr Niğde integrated cement plants and its Ankara grinding plant to Fernas Group. The transaction was valued at Euro110m. The sale was originally announced in mid-June 2022.
Turkmenistan: Turkmencement’s integrated Lebap plant has increased its production of cement to 0.47Mt in the first half of 2022. This is an improvement over the 0.45Mt level reported in the same period in 2021, according to Jeyhun News. The plant was originally built in 2013. A new production line at the site was reportedly ordered from Germany-based Thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions in mid-2021.
Algeria: Groupe des Ciments d'Algérie (GICA) has obtained a certificate of conformity with European standards (CE) for three types of cement. The certification should allow the company to export more products to Europe, according to the Expression newspaper. It applies to its Gica Moudhad and Gica Béton products. The move follows similar certification of products with the Association Française de Normalisation (AFNOR) from the company’s Aïn El Kebira plant in July 2021. At the same time the Minister of Industry said it was helping the group with its export strategy.
In 2021 GICA exported 2.25Mt of cement to countries including the Ivory Coast, Gambia, Ghana, Mauritania, Senegal , Cameroon, Benin, Guinea, Brazil, Peru, the Dominican Republic, Haiti and a number of European countries.
