Tokyo Cement opens water purification plant in Sri Lanka
28 January 2021Sri Lanka: Tokyo Cement has opened the first of six new 10,000l/day water purification plants under its Fountain of Life programme in Anuradhapura District, North Central Province. The Colomba Gazette newspaper has reported that the area has been affected by a high rate of chronic kidney disease.
Group chairman Harsha Cabral said, "We initiated our far-reaching Fountain of Life programme in support of the government's Water for All programme which aims to provide drinking water facilities to every household by 2025.”
Sri Lanka: Onyx Group chairman Nandana Lokuwithana says that his company will start operations at its 3.6Mt/yr grinding plant in Mirijjawila, Hambantota later in 2021. The unit has an investment of nearly US$100m, according to the Sunday Observer newspaper. It was previously reported in 2019 that two roller mills for the project had been ordered by Lanwa Sanstha Cement from Germany-based Gebr. Pfeiffer. Lanwa Sanstha Cement is a related company to Onyx Group.
Semen Padang exports 1.6Mt of cement and clinker in 2020
08 January 2021Indonesia: Semen Indonesia subsidiary Semen Padang’s cement and clinker exports totalled 1.6Mt in 2020. Indonesia Government News has reported that the company said that it exported 0.2Mt of cement and 1.4Mt of clinker throughout the year. The main markets for its products were Bangladesh, China, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Australia, the Maldives and Sri Lanka.
Semen Indonesia group senior export sales manager Fifit Abriyanto said, “There are two types of cement that we export, namely ordinary Portland cement (OPC) Type I grade 52.5N and OPC Type I grade 42.5N."
Sri Lanka: Insee Cement has extended the concessionary rate for its Sanstha cement product for current and former Sri Lankan armed forces personnel. The Daily FT newspaper has reported that the company first launched the scheme in August 2020.
Insee Cement chairman Nandana Ekanayake said, "We are thrilled to be offering Sri Lanka's most loved homebuilding cement brand Sanstha to all armed forces personnel island-wide.” He continued, “It was important for us to show all servicemen - those active, retired or disabled - our appreciation, as a mark of respect and gratitude for the sacrifices they have made for us, especially during these difficult times."
Lanwa Sanstha Cement’s Hambantota cement plant on course for June 2021 commissioning
10 December 2020Sri Lanka: Lanwa Sanstha Cement says that its upcoming 2.4Mt/yr Hambantota cement plant is on schedule for commissioning in June 2021. The total investment in this first phase of the project is US$70m. The Daily News newspaper has reported that the second phase of the project will consist of an expansion of the plant’s production capacity to 3.6Mt/yr at an additional cost of US$10m. Germany-based Gebr. Pfeiffer and Siemens have supplied the plant’s production equipment, while Denmark-based FLSmidth is supplying its packaging equipment.
Chair Nandana Lokuwithana said, “This facility will serve to benefit the construction industry tremendously by delivering products of premium quality to the market. The plant is the first of its kind in Sri Lanka to use cutting-edge European technology to yield optimum outcomes while being environmentally conscious through continuous monitoring.”
Tokyo Cement plans 1Mt/yr expansion
20 November 2020Sri Lanka: Tokyo Cement Company (Lanka) has announced that it expects to sign an agreement to increase the production of OPC and other hydraulic cement products by 1Mt/yr. The investment will be made at its existing cement grinding plant in Trincomalee on the north east coast of Sri Lanka.
Tokyo Cement said that the project would cost approximately US$12m. Global Cement notes that this amount is fairly low for such a large increase in cement capacity and therefore may represent increases in cement handling capacity, rather than grinding capacity. Tokyo Cement said that it expects the project to be completed within 24 months.
Iranian cement production grows by 14% to 36Mt in first half of year
18 November 2020Iran: Cement production rose by 14.4% year-on-year to 35.6Mt in the first half of the local calendar year that started in March 2020 from 31.1Mt in the same period in the previous year. The sector exported 5.8Mt of cement with a value of US$128m to 28 countries according to the Mehr News Agency. India, Afghanistan, Russia, Iraq, Qatar, Kenya, Kuwait, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Armenia, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, China and Oman were among the export destinations of cement.
Insee Cement appoints Gustavo Navarro as head in Sri Lanka
07 October 2020Sri Lanka: Insee Cement has appointed Gustavo Navarro as its chief executive officer (CEO) of its operations in Sri Lanka. He succeeds Nandana Ekanayake, according to the Nation newspaper. Ekanayake will remain at the company as chairman of the board. Navarro has previously held chief executive positions for Holcim in Serbia and Russia, and for CRH in Romania.
Iran: Data from the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA) shows that cement producers exported 5.85Mt of cement in the first five months of the local 2021 financial year, which began on 20 March 2020. The value of cement exports fell by 52% year-on-year to US$128m from US$266m, according to the Tehran Times newspaper. Iraq, Kuwait and Afghanistan were the top destination for the exports. Cement was also sent to India, Russia, Qatar, Kenya, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Armenia, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, China, and Oman.
In its 2020 financial year Iran exported a total of US$7.0bn-worth of building materials and produced 85Mt of cement against a domestic consumption of 65Mt.
Tokyo Cement supports underwater sculpture park
28 July 2020Sri Lanka: Tokyo Cement has supported its partner the Sri Lanka Navy in completing an underwater statue park. The Sunday Observer newspaper has reported that the 1200m2 park in Trincomalee Bay, Eastern Province, lies at a depth of 18m and unfolds a historical storyline. Tokyo Cement supplied its Tokyo Super blended hydraulic fly ash cement to the project.
Project leader Piyal De Silva said, “Our Coral Conservation Programme (CCP) partner Tokyo Cement will carry out monitoring and maintenance activities and will provide material and technical support to set up a coral nursery for replanting corals within the Underwater Marine Sanctuary (UMS). The marine park will gradually become the home to coral colonies native to the Trincomalee Bay area. With the corals, it will attract young fish, which will ultimately lead to the formation of fish communities.” Tokyo Cement has been involved in coral reef restoration around Sri Lanka since 2010.
