Vietnamese cement demand expected to stabilise in 2019
26 February 2019Vietnam: The Ministry of Construction says that demand for cement and clinker is expected to increase slightly to up to 99Mt in 2019. This will consist of 70Mt locally and 29Mt of exports, according to the Vietnam News Agency. Demand grew by 19% year-on-year to 96.7Mt in 2018, with growth driven by a 55% rise in exports to 31.6Mt. It shipped 9.8Mt to China in 2018. The main export markets in 2019 are expected to be the Philippines, Bangladesh, China, Taiwan and Peru.
Indian cement importers cancel orders from Pakistan
20 February 2019India/Pakistan: Cement importers in India have asked exporters in Pakistan to stop their consignments following a 200% rise in tariffs for cement and other products in India. The duties have been imposed in response to an attack on police in Pulwama in Jammu and Kashmir in mid-February 2019, according to the Dawn newspaper. A source quoted by the newspaper said that cement shipments are being recalled on route to destinations in India.
Around 75% of Pakistan's cement exports to India are conducted at the Wagah land border, while the rest are handled at sea. Exports to India between July - January of the current financial year were 0.65Mt and exports in 2017 -2018 were 1.2Mt.
Saudi Arabian cement demand expected to fall in 2019
19 February 2019Saudi Arabia: Demand for cement is forecast to fall in 2019. A report by Al Rajhi Capital expects this due to reduced government spending on infrastructure projects and growing construction costs, according to Trade Arabia. Cement producers will focus on pricing rather than volume in this environment. Exports are also expected to increase. Local sales volumes of cement decreased by 13% year-on-year in 2018.
FYM-HeidelbergCement to invest Euro2.5m at Port of Malaga
15 February 2019Spain: FYM-HeidelbergCement plans to invest Euro2.5m in a new 4900m2 plot at the Port of Malaga. The company will use the unit to export cement and clinker, according to the La Opinión de Málaga newspaper. At present the cement producer exports 0.5Mt/yr of clinker to markets in Africa, South America and Europe. FYM-HeidelbergCement operates an integrated cement plant in Malaga.
QNCC preparing to export cement
12 February 2019Qatar: Qatar National Cement Company (QNCC) is preparing to export clinker, grey cement and white cement. Following the completion of its 5000t/day Plant 5, the company is considering targeting countries like Yemen and Iraq, according to the Qatar Tribune. The cement producer has a production capacity of 16,000t/day. In 2018 it produced 2.9Mt of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) and Sulphate Resistant Portland Cement (SRC). It also intends to add new cement products to its portfolio in 2019.
El-Hamel Sidi Moussa starts exporting cement to Niger
11 February 2019Algeria: El-Hamel Sidi Moussa group’s Timegten cement plant has made its first 2000t export to Niger. The Chinese-Algerian joint venture used the Freight Transport and Logistics Group (Logitrans) to make the delivery overland via the In-Guezzam border crossing, according to Radio Algeria. The 1.2Mt/yr plant plans to target other countries, including Mali, Mauritania and Burkina Faso.
The Euro156m plant was commissioned in 2017. It is being run under a seven-year cooperation agreement where the Chinese partners manage the unit until the local workforce is trained. The plant also manufactures oil well cement.
Sumitomo Osaka’s sales up as export market suffers
08 February 2019Japan: Sumitomo Osaka’s sales have risen but national exports have fallen. The cement producer has starting promoting exports to counteract this trend. Its sales revenue rose by 4% year-on-year to US$1.71bn in the nine months to 31 December 2018 from US$1.65bn in the same period in 2017. Its operating profit fell by 27% to US$91.9m from US$125m. The company said that local cement demand grew by 1.3% to 32.5Mt in the reporting period. However, exports fell by 12.8%. Overall, national cement sales volumes decreased by 1.6% to 40.3Mt.
Kyrgyzstan: Shukhrat Sabirov, the head of the State Antimonopoly agency, has reported to parliament that South Kyrgyz Cement was fined for selling exported cement at a price lower than it sells cement locally. The official made the comment in response to questions from a member of parliament, according to Kyrgyzstan Newsline.
Algeria targets cement exports of US$500m by 2023
06 February 2019Algeria: Youcef Yousfi, the Minister of Industry and Mines, says that the government is aiming for cement exports worth US$500m by 2023. This is based on a surplus of 10 – 15Mt of cement by this time, according to Télévision Algérienne. Cement exports reached 1Mt in 2018. This is expected to grow to 2Mt soon with 1.2Mt supplied by GICA Group.
Nepal becomes self-sufficient in cement
04 February 2019Nepal: Dhrubaraj Thapa, the chairman of the Nepal Cement Producers’ Association, says that the country has become self sufficient in cement production. Local producers are expected to start exporting cement in the next financial year, according to the Himalayan Times newspaper. The country produced 9Mt of cement in the 2017 – 2018 financial year from a production capacity of 13Mt/yr.
