Qazax Sement Zavodu cement plant merges with concrete producer
28 September 2016Azerbaijan: The Qazax Sement Zavodu LLC cement plant has merged with the Akkord Beton LLC concrete plant. The Ministry of Taxes of Azerbaijan reported the merger.
Claudius Peters receives silo order from Cesla cement plant
28 September 2016Russia: Claudius Peters has received an order to supply four silo conversions and a new loading plant, consisting of four loading bins at the 0.8Mt/yr Slantsev ‘Celsa’ cement plant near St Petersberg, owned by HeidelbergCement . As part of the modification works, the storage silos will be equipped with new bottom aeration and new discharge systems. The order is part of an upgrade to raise the plant’s production capacity to 1.2Mt/yr.
To convey the cement to the new loading plants, Claudius Peters will install two Fluidcon lines each, with a capacity of 300t/hour each, supplied with Claudius Peters X-pumps. Four truck loading plants with a capacity of 200t/hour will also be installed.
FLSmidth and NHI Group sign joint-venture agreement for mining equipment
28 September 2016China: FLSmidth and Northern Heavy Industries Group (NHI Group), based in Shenyang, have signed an agreement to enter into a joint-venture, with an equal amount of shares, for the design and supply of mining equipment targeting the mid-market segment. The joint venture will be established with its own board of directors and management under the name NHI-Fuller (Shenyang) Mining (NHI-Fuller), which will financially report results as part of the Minerals Division in FLSmidth. Subject to obtaining regulatory approval, it is anticipated that NHI-Fuller will be operational in the first quarter of 2017.
"In 2014, we announced that part of our strategy in the Minerals Division was to enter the expanding mid-market for mining equipment. With the NHI Group, we have now found a perfect industrial partner for this quest," said Group Executive Vice President of the Minerals Division in FLSmidth, Manfred Schaffer.
The NHI-Fuller products will be designed for the needs of mid-market or capital expenditure sensitive customers in the mining industry and will be marketed under the NHI-Fuller brand name. While the initial focus will be to supply crushing products, the goal of the joint venture will be to become the leading mid-market mining equipment supplier for other product lines as well.
Colombia: Cemex Latam has dismissed its Vice President for Planning and the General Attorney for its Latin American and Colombian units following an investigation into US$20m payments related to a cement plant being built in Maceo, Antioquia Province, Colombia. In addition, the unit’s chief executive officer has resigned in connection to the probe, according to Bloomberg.
The South American subsidiary of Cemex found payments of about US$20m had been made to a non-government individual for land and mining rights, and benefits related to a tax-free area where the Maceo cement plant is being constructed, according to a regulatory filing released by the Colombian financial regulator. Cemex has informed the Colombian prosecutors of the results of its internal probe.
US competition body seeks public comment on Essroc sale to Argos
26 September 2016US: The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is accepting public comments on an application from HeidelbergCement and Italcementi to sell the Essroc Martinsburg cement plant in West Virginia. The divestment is required by the FTC as part of the requirements of the acquisition of Italcementi and its subsidiary Essroc, by HeidlebergCement. The companies have sought permission from the FTC to sell the Martinsburg plant to the US division of Colombia’s Cementos Argos.
The Commission will decide whether to approve the proposed divestiture after expiration of a 30 -day public comment period. Public comments may be submitted until 24 October 2016.
Sinoma unit sells stakes in Midong Tianshan and Fukang Tianshan
23 September 2016China: Xinjiang Tianshan Cement, a subsidiary of China National Materials Company (Sinoma), has arranged to sell stakes in two of its companies to Zhongtai Chemical. Zhongtai Chemical will acquire a 64.6% equity interest in Xinjiang Midong Tianshan Cement and the entire equity interest in Xinjiang Fukang Tianshan Cement, currently held by Tianshan Cement. It will also acquire a 19.47% equity interest in Midong Tianshan held by Xinjiang Tunhe Cement.
Sinoma said that the equity transfer aims to respond to the national policy of production capacity reduction, quality improvement and efficiency enhancement, and to realise the preservation and appreciation of the assets of Tianshan Cement.
Violence at hearing for quarry expansion by Ramco Cement
23 September 2016India: Commotion broke out at a public hearing seeking views on a proposed second quarry at a plant near Sendurai in Tamil Nadu for Ramco Cement. The police removed 13 attendees who threw chairs and caused disruption at the meeting, according to the Hindu newspaper. The hearing was organised by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board.
Ecocem strikes deal with Boliden to supply mines in Ireland and Sweden
23 September 2016Ireland/Sweden: Ecocem has arranged a deal with Boliden to supply mines in Ireland and Sweden. The two mines concerned by this deal are Boliden Tara Mines in Ireland and Boliden Garpenberg in Sweden. The agreements are initially for three years with options for extensions.
Ecocem have entered into an agreement with the Port of Gavle, the nearest Port to the Boliden Garpenberg mine. The Port of Gavle has built an import terminal to unload ships, and transfer the Ecocem product to trucks destined for the mine. The new facility will accommodate approximately 8000t. Ecocem’s cement will be pumped into the mine to backfill voids created by excavation.

Portland Cement Association and Mine Safety and Health Administration renew safety and health agreement
22 September 2016US: The Portland Cement Association (PCA) and the US Department of Labor’s Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has renewed for three years an on-going alliance aimed at fostering safer and more healthierl working conditions in the cement industry. Started in 2008, the agreement has enabled the PCA and the MSHA to share information, guidance and training resources to help protect the health and safety of all cement industry employees.
“Over the past seven years, this alliance has facilitated a productive collaboration between the cement industry and the regulatory agency, which has resulted in measurable safety and health benefits to cement industry employees,” said PCA President and CEO James G Toscas.
Raysut Cement completes gas pressure reduction unit at Salalah plant
22 September 2016Oman: Raysut Cement has commissioned and completed a gas pressure reduction unit at its plant in Salalah. The upgrade will enable the plant to increase its production capacity to 140,000t/yr from 130,000t/yr. This is expected to increase the profitability of the company. The cost of the project was estimated at US$5.45m when it was first announced in December 2015.
