Savannah Cement partners with Kenyatta University
09 June 2016Kenya: Savannah Cement has signed an agreement with a Kenyatta University run student work induction programme. Acting Vice Chancellor Professor Paul Wainaina signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Ronald Ndegwa of Savannah Cement to confirm the arrangement, which will include student internship, joint research and other activities. As part of the arrangement both undergraduate and postgraduate students will gain access to the business.
India: UltraTech Cement has signed a Memorandum of Understanding to buy Jaiprakash Associates’ cement plants, which have a total cement production capacity of 22.4Mt/yr. The deal includes both integrated cement plants and cement grinding plants. The plants are situated in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.
The acquisition also includes a 4Mt/yr cement grinding plant being built in Uttar Pradesh. UltraTech will pay an additional US$68.7m for this plant once it is completed. The deal will increase UltraTech’s total cement production capacity to 90.7Mt/yr from 68.3Mt/yr. The transaction is subject to regulatory approval.
Lafarge and Rusnano to make new materials
24 June 2011Russia: Dmitry Lisenkov, Managing Director of Rusnano and Alex de Valukhoff, General Director of Lafarge in Russia have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum 2011. The MoU signifies the intention of the two parties to begin working together towards the development of innovative and sustainable construction materials designed to provide more value for customers across Russia.
"We are delighted to sign a strategic agreement with Rusnano," said de Valukhoff. "It illustrates our mutual will to collaborate with the aim to introduce joint plants producing high performance mineral additives and fillers. Fostering innovation in sustainable development projects and industry modernisation are amongst our company's key priorities."
"The modern construction industry faces a significant number of challenges, the first of which are energy efficiency, materials durability and environment safety," said Lisenkov. "Therefore innovation in technology for the construction materials production has transformed traditional materials such as cement, concrete and gypsum into more technological and functional ones. In this field, nanotechnology development enables to reach new levels of qualities. Taking into consideration Lafarge's global scientific and research expertise, we see a great prospects in the collaboration with Lafarge in the area of high technology materials production in Russia."
ACC and Goa sign alternative fuels deal
16 June 2011India: A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on 13 June 2011 for the disposal of plastic waste between the Department of Environment, Government of Goa, and ACC's Wadi Cement plant. The MoU was signed by Michael D' Souza and M Sai Ramesh from ACC in the presence of Minister for Environment Aleixo Sequeira.
The MoU envisages establishing a collection and segregation mechanism for plastic waste from non-biodegradable solid waste for disposal through co-processing at the plant. It will be valid for a term of three years from the date of execution with an option of renewal by mutual consent on agreed terms and conditions. ACC will provide the services free of cost to the Department of Environment and to the state government.
