US: Buzzi Unicem USA plans to switch from producing Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) to Portland Limestone Cement (PLC) at all of its plants by the end of 2022. It said that it intends to transition from traditional ASTM C150 type I and II (OPC) cements in favour of ASTM C595 type IL cement (PLC). So far its Cape Girardeau and Festus plants in Missouri, Greencastle plant in Indiana, Maryneal plant in Texas and Pryor plant in Oklahoma have already completed the move to the PLC. The San Antonio plant in Texas will complete its transition in June 2022, the Chattanooga plant in Tennessee will switch its product line by September 2022 and the Stockertown cement plant in Pennsylvania will complete its conversion later in 2022. The company added that its engineers will continue working to increase the limestone content in cement by up to the permitted 15% and develop High Early Limestone cement, along with other new cement products with reduced clinker content.
Mexico: GCC has announced its plan for a 100% Portland limestone cement (PLC) transition of its Samalayuca, Chihuahua, cement plant. The producer says that the plant will complete its transition in July 2022. It said that the move is part of its CO2 emissions reduction roadmap.
Arizona, Maryland and Vermont governments approve Portland limestone cement for public procurement
11 May 2022US: The state governments of Arizona, Maryland and Vermont have approved the use of Portland limestone cement (PLC) in public construction projects. The rule changes bring the total number of states in which PLC may be used in this way to 44.
The Portland Cement Association (PCA) has welcomed the decision. The association said "Widespread acceptance of PLC marks a significant step to reducing the carbon footprint of concrete construction and advancing the goals laid out in the PCA Roadmap to Carbon Neutrality."
Argos USA launches EcoStrong PLC
04 May 2022US: Argos USA has launched its new Portland Limestone Cement (PLC) brand EcoStrong.The company says the its will complete its conversion to 100% EcoStrong PLC cement production across all facilities in 2023.Its Roberta, Alabama cement plant and Atlanta, Georgia grinding plant will transition by mid-2022, while its Newberry, Florida cement plant will transition by October 2022.Argos USA plans to use EcoStrong cement at all of its Eastern US ready-mix concretesites by mid-2022.
Cement technical director Steve Wilcox said“I am excited to be part of Argos’ brand announcement for our PLC Type IL product. EcoStrong PLC encompasses everything we have worked for over the past decade, to offer a high-quality product with lower embodied carbon, which contributes to the ultimate goal of decarbonising across our operations. Our PLC product is engineered to reduce the harmful effects on the environment and perform similar to or better than our ordinaryPortland cement (OPC) Type I/II. EcoStrong PLC empowers our customers, specifiers, architects, and engineers to design and execute their projects with resilience and sustainability.”
US: Holcim US has successfully transitioned its 0.5Mt/yr Joppa, Illinois, cement plant to 100% Portland limestone cement (PLC) production. The plant will produce the company’s OneCem brand PLC. The producer says that the facility supplies cement to customers along the Mississippi from Minneapolis to the Gulf of Mexico and up the Ohio as far as Pittsburgh.
Plant manager Michel Klenk said “As a leader in our industry, it’s our responsibility to build a path for others to follow by setting the bar for product innovation and improvement. OneCem fits the bill as a low-carbon product that allows for sustained performance with lower emissions.”
US: CalPortland has converted production at the 1.3Mt/yr Mojave cement plant in California to its Advancement HS, a Portland limestone cement (PLC) product. The plant will reduce its CO2 emissions by 10% on a per ton basis. The company said the move supported the Portland Cement Association’s Roadmap to Carbon Neutrality and the industry’s overall efforts to address climate change.
US: Cemex has increased production of Portland limestone cement (PLC) at its Lyons plant in Colorado. PLC is expected to become the plant’s primary product by the summer of 2022. The blended cement has been produced at the site for over 15 years. However, Cemex says it is growing production to meet the company’s carbon reduction goals and meet increased demand for lower carbon materials.
Cemex USA has also increased PLC production at its plants in Brooksville, Florida, and Demopolis, Alabama. The start of PLC production or further increases is planned for other cement plants later in 2022.
US: Summit Materials subsidiary Continental Cement’s 1.1Mt/yr Davenport, Iowa, cement plant has become the latest US cement plant to transition to 100% Portland limestone cement (PLC) production.
Summit Materials executive vice president Tom Beck said "Our transition to PLC at Davenport aligns with the Portland Cement Association (PCA)'s Roadmap to Carbon Neutrality.” He continued “It is critical that the industry comes together and acts now to create sustainable building solutions for decades to come. The US cement and concrete industries can collectively address climate change, decrease greenhouse gas emissions and eliminate barriers that are restricting environmental progress through the continued adoption of product and manufacturing innovations."
Canada: Lafarge Canada has converted its Richmond, British Colombia, cement plant to 100% OneCem Portland limestone cement (PLC) production. OneCem cement’s CO2 emissions per tonne are 13% below the Canadian PLC average. The Richmond plant has supplied OneCem cement to the Western Canada and US Pacific Northwest customers since 2011. Since that time, it has eliminated 1.18Mt of CO2 emissions, according to the producer.
President and CEO Brad Kohl said "Collaborating with local government and stakeholders was key to ensuring OneCem PLC’s uptake in the market, and conversion away from traditional high-intensity cement products. As industry leaders, we want to facilitate access to low carbon cements across Canada, and starting with Richmond is a big step towards making that happen."
CalTransport approves Portland limestone cement use
29 March 2022US: The California Department of Transportation (CalTrans) has approved the use of Portland limestone cement (PLC) in its projects. The California Nevada Cement Association (CNCA) says that the move has the potential to eliminate 25,500t/yr of CO2 emissions.
The CNCA plans to achieve cement and concrete carbon neutrality by 2045 through three priority actions. These are investment in promising and critical long-term technologies (crucially carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) technologies), increased alternative fuel (AF) substitution and the acceptance of PLC for CalTrans projects. Thus, the latest CalTrans decision marks the establishment of one pillar of the CNCA’s ambitious plan for net zero.
