Saudi ports ready for more cement imports
22 May 2013Saudi Arabia: Commercial ports in Saudi Arabia are ready to process more cement and clinker, according to a Ports Authority (PA) spokesman quoted by Arab News. The move supports a command issued by the King of the country in April 2013 that ordered 10Mt of cement to cope with local shortage.
The PA has set up 17 docking stations for handling and storage of cement and clinker. Jeddah, Dammam and Jubail have four stations each. Yanbu, Dhuba and Jazan are equipped with one site each. The authority has agreed with Saudi Arabia-based Southern Province Cement Company to import cement and clinker through the Jazan Port, as well as with Yanbu Cement Company for clinker imports. All the ports are required to support the cement companies in providing enough space for storage and loading.
Raysut Cement plans to invest in Duqm terminal
01 May 2013Oman: Raysut Cement Company is planning to build a cement-handling terminal at Duqm port with other investors. At an industry seminar reported upon by the Times of Oman, Mohammed Ahmed Al Dheeb, group chief executive officer of Raysut Cement, said the cement handling terminal will be completed within ten months of signing a lease agreement with the Special Economic Zone Authority at Duqm. Al Dheeb added that Raysut is also planning to develop mines in Duqm for limestone.
Raysut Cement has four cement handling terminals: in Muscat, Sohar, Mukalla, and Aden. It has four production lines in Salalah with a total cement production capacity of 3Mt/yr and a fully integrated production facility in Ras Al Khaima with a capacity of 1.5Mt/yr. Raysut also owns two ships for transporting cement to different parts of Oman and other countries.
North Korean ship accused by Somalia of dumping cement
28 November 2012Somalia: Authorities from the autonomous Somali state of Puntland have impounded a North Korean ship for allegedly dumping cement off the country's coast.
The Democratic People's Republic of Korea flagged vessel MV Daesan was captured near to Bossaso whilst it was unloading 5000t of cement. The MV Daesan had originally been heading to Mogadishu but its cargo was rejected due to water leakage.
According to NK News and Radio Gaalkacyo the Somali authorities condemned the dumping as 'illegal' and 'environmentally destructive.' The Somali authorities are reportedly planning to bring the crew before a court.
