Four workers die at Zhongda cement plant
21 March 2017China: Four workers have died when the roof of a shed collapsed at the Zhongda cement plant in Zhangzhou, Fujian Province. Three workers died at the scene and another died in hospital, according to the Xinhua News Agency. An investigation is currently underway.
Fatality at Kosmos Cement plant
10 August 2016US: A person has died at the Kosmos Cement plant in Louisville, Kentucky. Local police told the WDRB local television station that the male victim was aged in his 30s or 40s and was pronounced dead on the scene. Officials say the death was a workplace accident involving a pulley system.
Meghna Cement Mills worker dies at Mongla port
08 August 2016Bangladesh: Masud Sheikh, a technician working at Bashundhara Group's Meghna Cement Mills, has died from inhaling ‘poisonous gas’ in an abandoned barge owned by Meghna Cement Mills at the port of Mongla. Sheikh, aged 42 years and a Bangladeshi national, was attempting to rescue a Chinese national who also died in the incident, according to the Xinhua News Agency. The Chinese employee of Sinohydro supporting the construction of the Padma Bridge was checking the barge prior to its sale.
Cemex fined for 2014 worker death in Kentucky
22 April 2016US: Kosmos Cement, a subsidiary of Cemex, has pleaded guilty to violating workplace safety standards. It is liable to be fined to up to US$400,000 towards the death of a worker at its Louisville cement plant in Kentucky in 2014. Michael Egan, Cemex's executive vice president and general counsel, entered the guilty plea for the company. Contract employee Felipe Mata Vizcaya fell to his death after opening an elevator door when the elevator car wasn't there, according to the Courier-Journal.
Cemex is required to pay US$200,000 immediately and the balance if it doesn't make required repairs within three years. It has also pledged to design, operate and test all elevators at the site to meet national safety standards and to install additional safety features.
In a statement, US Attorney John Kuhn called the matter "one of the worst cases of negligence on the part of a company." The company was accused of violating the Mine Safety and Health Act, and the case was investigated by the US Labor Department's Mine Safety & Health Administration.
Togo: Four people were killed when a fuel tank exploded at the West African Cement (WACEM) plant in Tabligbo, the country's security minister has announced.
"Six workers were carrying out welding work on the roof of the tank when the tragedy happened. A total of four people died," said Colonel Yark Damehame to AFP. The explosion left one worker seriously injured and in intensive care. Another worker, an Indian national, is missing and a search is underway according to local media. A staff representative at the plant, Emmanuel Montcho, said that the Indian national was the foreman and that 13 workers in total had been working to repair the tank before the explosion.
Cemex condemns assassination of its head of security
04 February 2015Colombia: Cemex has condemned a recent attack that resulted in the death of Clavijo Rojas, head of Cemex security, near to a cement plant that it is building in Maceo, Magdalena Medio. Cemex executives want local authorities to investigate the incident so that the criminals can be apprehended. Clavijo Rojas, a 50 year old German citizen, was travelling in a car with another person when they were fired upon, possibly by a guerrilla group or by those linked to organised crime. Cemex said that it had not received any threats or demands in this area.
