Indocement buys Semen Grobogan’s Grobogan cement plant
18 October 2023Indonesia: Heidelberg Materials subsidiary Indocement has bought the 1.8Mt/yr integrated Grobogan cement plant in Central Java from Semen Grobogan. The plant commands sufficient limestone reserves for the next 50 years and has 700,000t/yr of additional cement grinding capacity.
Heidelberg Materials chair Dominik von Achten said “As part of our ongoing portfolio optimisation, we are making an exciting step in the growth market of Indonesia. Heidelberg Materials has been active in Indonesia for more than 20 years. With this investment, we are now strengthening our presence in one of the most populated regions in Indonesia, where we expect further market growth driven by the growing retail market, developing industrial areas and major infrastructure projects. As frontrunners of decarbonisation in emerging markets, we continue to drive our ambitious CO2 reduction targets at all our sites in Indonesia, including the new cement plant.”
India: Dalmia Bharat says that it will complete its acquisition of Jaiprakash Associates’ cement business, Jaypee Cement, towards the end of the 2024 financial year on 31 March 2024. Informist EquityWire News has reported that the deal is ‘taking more time’ than expected to conclude.
Jaypee Cement’s Madhya Pradesh-based subsidiary Jaybee Bhilai Cement is subject to an on-going shareholder dispute, due to which a court has frozen the company’s 74% shareholding in the unit.
Etex to acquire BGC’s lightweight building materials businesses
12 October 2023Australia/New Zealand: Belgium-based Etex has signed an agreement with building materials company BGC to acquire the latter’s gypsum and fibre cement businesses. The fibre cement business includes the Canning Vale fibre cement boards plant in Western Australia. BGC also operates nine warehouses across Australia and New Zealand. Etex says that the deal expands its activities in the ‘attractive’ local market, with significant growth opportunities. Finalisation is expected in early 2024.
Etex CEO Bernard Delvaux said “This deal is a strategic opportunity for Etex to complement our footprint in Australia and further increase the accessibility of our products and services for customers. This will both reinforce our gypsum wallboard offering and position us well in the growing fibre cement activities through a broad product range and good channel access.”
Adani Cement and UltraTech Cement may join race to acquire Heidelberg Materials’ Indian business
05 October 2023India: The Hindu newspaper has reported that Adani Cement and UltraTech Cement may submit offers for Heidelberg Materials’ Indian business. This follows the news that parent company Heidelberg Materials has reportedly entered into talks with JSW Cement over the possible sale of the business. It consists of cement plants in Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Telangana, in addition to a cement terminal and four grinding plants across India.
Global Cement reported on 4 October 2023 that Heidelberg Materials’ Indian subsidiary HeidelbergCement India had said it was ‘unaware’ of any discussions between its parent company and JSW Cement.

04 October 2023India: HeidelbergCement India has clarified that it is ‘unaware’ of reported discussions between its parent company Heidelberg Materials and JSW Cement over the possible transfer of the former’s Indian assets, Reuters has reported.
Heidelberg Materials owns 13.4Mt/yr-worth of cement capacity in India, of which HeidelbergCement India comprises 6.3Mt (47%).
RHI Magnesita acquires P-D Refractories
03 October 2023Central Europe: Austria-based RHI Magnesita has acquired P-D Refractories from Germany-based Preiss-Daimler Group for Euro45m. P-D Refractories produces refractories in the Czech Republic and Germany, and operates other sites in the Czech Republic and Slovenia.
RHI-Magnesita’s CEO Stefan Borgas said “The production capabilities and vertical integration of P-D Refractories, combined with RHI Magnesita’s know-how and renowned research and development capabilities, will complement our product portfolio and enlarge our production footprint and sales channels on a global scale. This acquisition is our sixth transaction to close in the year to date and marks a major milestone for both companies in the process industries sector. Together we look forward to expanding our footprint and strengthening our market presence by offering high-grade refractory products and solutions to an enlarged customer base.”
Cemex to buy mortars and adhesives manufacturer Kiesel
28 September 2023Germany: Mexico-based Cemex has agreed to buy Kiesel, a manufacturer of mortars and adhesives, for an undisclosed sum. The deal is intended to grow Cemex’s Urbanization Solution business through bolt-on acquisitions. The acquisition will be subject to conditions including regulatory approval. The transaction is expected to be competed from the fourth quarter of 2023.
Sergio Menéndez, president of Cemex Europe, Middle East, Africa & Asia said “This acquisition will enhance our Urbanization Solutions business and allow us to serve our customers better.” He continued, “We remain committed to increasing our capacity to serve growing urban markets with more sustainable and innovative solutions.”
Kiesel was originally founded in 1959 and serves markets in Germany, France, Poland and the Czech Republic. Its portfolio includes a range of products to ensure efficient installation of all types of floors or wall coverings, as well as mortars for the installation of ceramic and natural stone tiles.
PPC raises PPC Zimbabwe stake
21 September 2023Zimbabwe: South Africa-based PPC has raised its stake in PPC Zimbabwe from 71% to 90%. In an operating update, PPC told investors that PPC Zimbabwe increased its sales by 19% year-on-year in the five months to 31 August 2023. Meanwhile, the group’s South African business raised its sales by 58% year-on-year over the same period. PPC attributed the growth to cost reductions and price increases across both markets, as well as ‘exceptionally strong’ growth in its cement volumes in Zimbabwe. Overall, cement volumes rose by 3% year-on-year.
PPC was previously reported to be considering selling its entire PPC Zimbabwe stake for US$200m in February 2023.
Norges Bank acquires 5% stake in Cahya Mata Sarawak
18 September 2023Malaysia: Norway-based Norges Bank has bought a 5% stake in Cahya Mata Sarawak, Bernama Daily Malaysian News has reported.
The bank said “Norges Bank's mission is to promote economic stability and manage substantial assets on behalf of the Norwegian people.” It added “As part of its investment strategy for the Government Pension Fund Global, Norges Bank seeks to optimise returns within the framework of its investment mandate.”
Shareholder dispute at Jaypee Bhilai Cement threatens Dalmia Cement (Bharat)’s Jaiprakash Associates cement acquisition
14 September 2023India: Dalmia Cement (Bharat) faces a potential stumbling block to its planned acquisition of Jaiprakash Associates’ cement business for US$683m due to an on-going shareholder dispute at subsidiary Jaypee Bhilai Cement. The Economic Times newspaper has reported that a court has frozen Jaiprakash Associates’ 74% shareholding in the company, and ordered it not to create new third party rights. State-owned Steel Authority of India Limited holds the remaining 26% stake in the cement producer, which operates the 2.2Mt/yr Bhilai Jaypee grinding plant in Durg, Chhattisgarh.
Dalmia Cement (Bharat) and Jaiprakash Associates concluded multiple separate agreements for the transfer of ownership of Jaiprakash Associates’ cement subsidiaries on 26 April 2023. Besides Jaypee Bhilai Cement, these include cement plant and limestone mine operator JP Super and grinding plant operator Jaiprakash Power Ventures.
