20 December 2023Nigeria: BUA Cement has reportedly stated operations on the new 3Mt/yr Line 5 at its Sokoto cement plant. Local media has reported that inauguration will follow in January 2024, as scheduled.
Holcim Mexico to trial hydrogen injection in cement kilns
18 December 2023Mexico: Holcim Mexico has concluded a deal to set up a trial of hydrogen injection in kilns at one or more of its seven cement plants in Mexico. The producer says that the technology will optimise combustion processes and facilitate the increased substitution of alternative fuel.
China: China Resources Building Materials Technology (CRBMT) subsidiary Tianyang Cement has concluded a ‘full-process intelligent cement plant’ pilot at its 2.81Mt/yr Baise cement plant in Guangxi Province. Tianyang Cement said that the pilot entailed an upgrade that has more than doubled Baise cement plant’s production volumes and reduced its CO2 emissions per tonne of cement by 24%. Tianyang Cement says that automation has reduced the plant’s unplanned shutdowns by 56% and improved product quality.
Siam City Cement (Lanka) orders SpectraFlow Airslide analyser for Puttalam cement plant
14 December 2023Sri Lanka: Switzerland-based SpectraFlow Analytics has received an order for a SpectraFlow Airslide analyser and raw mix proportioning software from Siam City Cement (Lanka). The equipment will analyse the composition of material exiting the raw materials mill at Siam City Cement (Lanka)’s Puttalam cement plant. The supplier says that this will help to increase kiln feed quality, lowering the chances of refractory problems and other causes of kiln stoppages.
SpectraFlow Analytics said “The ever increasing demand in cost savings and at the same time improving product quality led Siam City Cement (Lanka) to invest in the most advanced raw mill optimisation package available on the market.”
Holcim Hrvatska secures Euro117m in EU funding for Koromačno cement plant carbon capture project
08 December 2023Croatia: The European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) has granted Holcim Hrvatska Euro117m-worth of EU funding for its KOdeCO Net Zero decarbonisation project. The project aims to decarbonise cement production at the company’s 500,000t/yr Koromačno cement plant in Istria by building a Euro237m carbon capture system there.
Holcim Hrvatska says that the project will commence in January 2024 and conclude by the end of 2028.
Kenya: Frontier Energy subsidiary Momnai Energy has begun building two solar power plants at sites belonging to Bamburi Cement. One 14.5MW plant will be situated at the producer’s 1.1Mt/yr Mombasa cement plant, while another 5MW plant will be situated at its Nairobi grinding plant. When commissioned, they will cover 30% of the producer’s energy consumption. Momnai Energy will finance, manage and maintain the solar power plants on the basis of a power purchase agreement (PPA) signed between the parties in 2021.
Bamburi Cement chief executive officer Mohit Kapoor said that the project ‘represents one of Kenya's most substantial commercial solar endeavours undertaken by a cement company, and a first for Holcim in Sub-Saharan Africa.’ He added that it will lead to cost savings, reduced vulnerability to load shedding and ‘substantial’ progress towards achieving net zero CO2 emissions.
Fujairah Cement Industries appoints ThyssenKrupp Decarbon Technologies to upgrade Dibba cement plant
04 December 2023UAE: Germany-based ThyssenKrupp Decarbon Technologies says that it has won a new contract with Fujairah Cement Industries. Under the contract, the supplier will carry out an upgrade at the Dibba cement plant to reduce its CO2 emissions.
Saudi Arabia: Riyadh Cement Company awarded a US$34.8m contract to China-based Sinoma Energy Conservation to install a waste heat recovery (WHR) plant at its 3.7Mt/yr Riyadh cement plant. The installation will have a power generation capacity of 12.6MW.
Itacamba wins Sustainability Seal for Yacuses cement plant upgrade
22 November 2023Bolivia: The Federation of Private Entrepreneurs of Santa Cruz (FEPSC) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) awarded the Sustainability Seal to Itacamba on 11 November 2023. Local press has reported that the award recognises the successes of the producer’s upgrade to the grinding unit at its Yacuses cement plant. The upgrade reduced the energy footprint of the plant’s cement by 1.5kWh/t and eliminated 0.3% of its total CO2 emissions.
Cahya Mata Sarawak to expand Kuching cement plant
21 November 2023Malaysia: Cahya Mata Sarawak has appointed China-based Sinoma Industry Engineering to provide technical consultancy services for an expansion and upgrade at its Kuching cement plant. Bernama Daily Malaysian News has reported that Sinoma Industry Engineering will help the producer to upgrade the plant’s 1Mt/yr Line 1 and build its planned 1.9Mt/yr Line 2.
