Holcim acquires Teko Mining Serbia
12 July 2022Serbia: Holcim has acquired aggregates producer Teko Mining Serbia. Teko Mining Serbia’s aggregates sales were 2.4Mt in 2021. It employs 150 people across its quarries in Batocina, Ceramide, Ladne Vode and Ljubovija.
Holcim’s Europe, Middle East and Africa regional head Miljan Gutovic said “Teko complements our existing cement and concrete operations perfectly, allowing us to add aggregates and asphalt as part of our integrated offer in this highly dynamic market. I look forward to welcoming the employees of Teko Mining, whose expertise will be invaluable in accelerating our growth, especially in the highly dynamic Serbian market, and will enable us to develop circular solutions to recycle construction and demolition waste in the future.”
Canada: Holcim has announced its acquisition of Mathers Group’s quarry and asphalt assets in Quebec. The group says that the acquisition will accelerate its development of local circular construction practices by expanding its recycled concrete offering.
Germany: HeidelbergCement has joined EPEA’s Heidelberg Circular City Building Material Registry pilot project. The initiative uses EMEA’s Urban Mining Screening digital registry, which is able to estimate the composition of buildings based on building data. HeidelbergCement says that it will enable it to source construction and demolition waste for circular economic use in building materials production. This will support its ReConcrete 360° recycled concrete CO2 reincorporation project, among other projects. The initiative will turn Heidelberg into Europe’s first Circular City.
“Full circular economy and sustainable construction are central elements of our climate strategy,” said HeidelbergCement chair Dominik von Achten. “We are focusing on the life cycle assessment of our product concrete, including the processing of demolished concrete, and returning it to the construction cycle. By 2030, we want to offer circular alternatives for half of our concrete products.” Von Achten concluded “Together with the city of Heidelberg, also a pioneer in the area of climate protection, we want to use the Circular City project to demonstrate the enormous potential of concrete recycling for future urban construction.”
India: India Cements has signed a strategic collaboration agreement with 3D printing equipment supplier company Tvasta Manufacturing. The agreement establishes mutual strategic support between the partners in their efforts to develop new raw materials for use in 3D printing.
India Cements director Rupa Gurunath said "We are excited that Tvasta Manufacturing's technology delivers a cost-effective construction method that offers quicker turn-arounds as compared to conventional methods. But what we are particularly enthusiastic about is that this methodology is more eco-friendly, with lower consumption of water and sand."
Holcim US buys 10 Hyliion electric trucks
26 May 2022US: Holcim has commissioned 10 Hyliion Hypertruck ERX electric trucks in its Oklahoma and Texas cement and concrete operations. The cement producer says that the trucks reduce CO2 emissions by 89% when using renewable natural gas compared to conventional diesel vehicles.
Holcim US aggregates and construction materials CEO Jay Moreau said “This agreement with Hyliion underscores the direction Holcim is taking around the globe to reach our sustainability and environmental goals. By integrating sustainable technologies like electric vehicles into our operations, such as those of Hyliion, we are able to build on our promise of making greener cities, reducing emissions and driving the circular economy.”
Germany: The Ministry for Economy and Climate Protection has presented HeidelbergCement with its German Climate and Environment Innovation Prize (IKU) for its ReConcrete-360° concrete recycling process. The process retrieves hardened cement paste from waste demolition concrete for use in place of limestone in clinker and cement production. The recycled material can also bind CO2 to act as a carbon sink.
Global research and development Wolfgang Dienemann said “With ReConcrete-360°, we have succeeded in developing a limestone substitute from demolished concrete that also allows us to use the carbon-containing exhaust gases from cement production. A small revolution with a big impact: In Germany alone, the CO2 savings potential of this process is 10Mt/yr. The IKU award underlines that we can be proud of our pioneering innovation.”
Italy: Buzzi Unicem’s net sales grew by 17.2% year-on-year to Euro800m in the first quarter of 2022 from Euro682m in the same period in 2021. Its cement and ready-mixed concrete sales volumes rose by 2.9% to 6.36Mt and 6% to 2.69Mm3 respectively. The group reported growing sales volumes in Central Europe, Poland, the Czech Republic and the US but it noted a slowdown in Italy. Sales volumes were also disrupted in Ukraine and Russia due to the ongoing war between the countries. The group added that its prices were ‘markedly’ up in all markets where it operates to offset rising prices of raw materials and energy.
The company said that in Ukraine it was forced to suspend nearly all of the production and commercial activities at both of its plants when Russia invaded the country. In Russia it said that retaliatory economic sanctions led by the US and European Union had led to a “significant revision of the country's growth prospects.” Local sales volumes significantly slowed down in March 2022 after hostilities started but local operations still managed to report some growth in sales even in spite negative currency exchange effects. Buzzi Unicem said that, “Due to the sanctions imposed on Russia by the European institutions, we decided to immediately withdraw from any operational involvement in the activities carried out by the subsidiary OOO SLK Cement in Russia. Consequently, further strategic initiatives in the country will be suspended.”
Denmark: GE Renewable Energy has invested in a minority stake in COBOD International. The companies said that the investment will build on their existing relationship since 2019. GE Renewable Energy chose COBOD International as the global market leader in 3D printing technology, which experienced double-digit growth in 2020.
GE Renewable Energy advanced manufacturing technology leader Matteo Bellucci said “This agreement, which will further strengthen our ability to use COBOD’s 3D printing technology and competences in the renewable energy space, is another sign of our commitment to help drive the energy transition by investing in technology that promotes a more sustainable, circular design strategy and helps to create local jobs.” He continued “Since we started cooperating with COBOD, the company has continued to improve their technical competence and innovative solutions, reinforcing the benefits of solidifying the relationship between our companies.”
Mexico: Cemex intends for its Vertua products to account for over half of all of its cement and concrete sales by 2025. The Vertua range was launched in 2020 and its cement and concrete products accounted for 34% and 31% of total sales respectively in the first quarter of 2022. Vertua products have a CO2 reduction of at least 25% compared to traditional cements. For concrete the CO2 reduction ranges from 30% up to a full net-zero option.
References for Vertua concrete include La Marseillaise, a skyscraper in Marseille, the HS2 high-speed railway in London, the Querétaro-Irapuato highway in Mexico, the San Diego State University stadium in California and the Pereira shopping centre in Colombia. Vertua cement and concrete products have been launched in Colombia, Croatia, the Czech Republic, the Dominican Republic, Egypt, France, Germany, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, the Philippines, Poland, Puerto Rico, Spain, the US, the UK and the UAE.
