10 January 2023China: China Tianrui Group Cement settled a term loan facility on 9 January 2023. Reuters has reported the value of the facility as US$30m.
National Transmission and Despatch Company to build new grid station for Chakwal cement plants
19 December 2022Pakistan: National Transmission and Despatch Company (NTDC) has secured a US$46.6m loan from German state-owned bank KfW for construction of a new 500kV grid station in Chakwal, Punjab. The German government loaned NTDC a further US$2.55m for power capacity expansions. The investments will go towards increasing the availability of electricity in Chakwal, primarily for the benefit of the district's multiple cement plants.
Bestway Cement, DG Khan Cement and Gharibwal cement operate four cement plants with a total capacity of 8.5Mt/yr in Chakwal.
CRH launches CRH Ventures
16 December 2022Ireland: CRH has announced the launch of its new innovation investments company CRH Ventures. The new subsidiary has funds of US$250m and will focus on the technologies that address the construction sector's core challenges. The group said that CRH Ventures' investment decisions will assess potential for decarbonisation, automation and the development of advanced sustainable building products, among other factors.
CRH's CEO Albert Manifold said "The launch of CRH Ventures demonstrates our continued commitment to investing in new technologies that will shape the built environment of tomorrow. CRH Ventures will serve as a valuable partner to start-ups and entrepreneurs, which will benefit from the technical capabilities, knowledge and expertise of a global industry leader, to pilot and scale new technologies and innovations that will enable safer, smarter and more sustainable construction.”
Sanghi Industries secures financing from Kotak Investment Advisors
06 December 2022India: Sanghi Industries has borrowed US$60.6m from Kotak Investment Advisors. The cement producer secured the funds in the form of non-convertible debentures (NCDs).
Sanghi Industries produces its Sanghi Cement brand cement in Gujarat.
Grasim Industries raises US$123m through non-convertible debentures
01 December 2022India: Grasim Industries has informed investors that it has raised US$123m through allotment of 7.6% rated, listed, unsecured redeemable non-convertible debentures (NCDs).
CRISIL and ICRA have rated the NCDs as AAA (stable).
Europe: The Carbon Negative Biofuels from Organic Waste (Carbiow) project has received EU funding under the Horizon Europe initiative. Carbiow seeks to develop a dense, dry homogenous marine and aviation biofuel by carbonising gasification ash with oxygen and captured CO2 from cement plants. 12 consortium members from the Benelux, Germany, Nordic countries, Slovenia and Spain are participating in the project.
Grasim Industries to raise US$121m
03 November 2022India: Grasim Industries has secured its board's finance committee's clearance to raise up to US$121m through issue of non-convertible debentures. The Aditya Birla subsidiary plans to carry out the issue on a private placement basis, in one or more tranches.
Udayapur Cement seeks US$3.82m government loan
24 October 2022Nepal: Udayapur Cement has urged the Nepalese government's Ministry of Finance to process its application for a loan of US$3.82m. The Kathmandu Post newspaper has reported that the producer plans to invest in an upgrade to its 800t/day-capacity Gaighat cement plant in Province No.1. The plant is reportedly unable to meet its capacity due to frequent issues with its 33-year-old equipment. The producer hopes that an upgrade will increase the plant's production capacity by 41% to 2.5m bags/yr. It also expects its expenditure on coal to fall by 25% as a result.
Director general Gopi Neupane noted the Gaighat cement plant's access to high quality limestone not available elsewhere in the country. He said "We will turn the factory into a profit-making enterprise if the additional investment is provided. We have huge scope for exporting cement to Uttar Pradesh and Bihar (in India)."
Heliogen secures US$4.1m grant for solar-fired cement production
04 October 2022US: Heliogen is among recipients of a total US$24m in US Department of Energy funding for solar thermal power projects. The department granted it US$4.1m-worth of funding for a project in which it will calcine limestone at 950°C using the heat of the Sun. Heliogen hopes to apply the methods it is developing to prevent the direct emissions of cement production.
JSW Cement secures US$48.9m sustainability-linked loan
03 October 2022India: JSW Cement has taken a loan of US$48.9m with which to finance its planned 47% capacity growth to 25Mt/yr from 17Mt/yr. MUFG Bank India provided the loan subject to sustainability-linked criteria. Press Trust of India News has reported that the producer’s subsidiary Shiva Cement is in the process of establishing a US$183m 1.36Mt/yr clinker plant and 1Mt/yr grinding plant in Odisha’s Sundergarh District.
