Shree Cement signs US$961m cement plant MoU with government of Karnataka

13 February 2025

India: Shree Cement has signed a memorandum of understanding with the government of Karnataka to invest nearly US$1bn in cement manufacturing facilities over the next five years. The producer will build a cement plant in the city of Kalaburagi, with 3.5Mt/yr of clinker capacity and 3Mt/yr of cement capacity, for US$288m. The plant will create 300 jobs and start production in 2025.

Shree Cement will build a second plant nearby, in the Kalaburagi district. The plant will have a clinker capacity of 3.5Mt/yr and an eventual cement capacity of 6Mt/yr, to be commissioned in two phases. It will create 750 jobs and cost US$575m. Commissioning is scheduled for 2030.

The last project planned is for a clinker grinding plant in the district of Bangalore Rural, with a capacity of 3Mt/yr and a cost of US$98m. The facility will create 250 jobs and begin production in 2028.

Shree Cement has stated that it is ‘committed to sustainable development’ and will ‘incorporate advanced technologies to ensure environmentally friendly operations.’

Titan Cement invests in Optimitive

Europe: Titan Cement has invested in AI solutions provider Optimitive, to reinforce the use of AI for the optimisation of its plants. The producer aims to continue to improve its productivity and efficiency through this investment. The investment follows Titan Cement's implementation of Optimitive's Optibat software at its plants in order to improve their operational performance, reduce energy consumption and curb CO₂ emissions.

Fernando de la Prida, CEO of Optimitive, said "For Optimitive, the investment by Titan, one of the main players in the cement market, demonstrates the strength of the company, the cutting-edge technology built inside our product and the high level of satisfaction of our customers."

Karcimsa to invest US$30m in 1Mt/yr clinker and granulated slag grinding facility

10 February 2025

Türkiye: Cement producer Karcimsa Cement said that it will invest US$30m in a 1Mt/yr clinker and granulated slag grinding facility in Kayseri.

The plant will produce ‘green’ cement with low carbon emissions, according to chair of Karcimsa, Soner Ozbey.

Back in March 2024, Türkiye imposed restrictions on cement to expand the use of low-carbon cement in public procurement contracts from 2025.

"The clinker/cement ratio in the cement to be used in public investments will be a maximum of 0.80 as of 2025 and this ratio will decrease to 0.75 by 2030," Karcimsa said.

The company will reportedly procure slag from Kardemir to be used in production.

Karcimsa is a joint venture between Turkish steel firm Kardemir and concrete producer Beycim Beton Sanayi.

Titan Cement Group details latest venture capital investments

Greece: Titan Cement Group says that it has accelerated its innovation strategy with new investments in cement-aligned start-ups. The producer has invested in AI-based industrial process optimiser developer Optimitive, in concrete design systems developer Concrete.ai, in demolition materials-based concrete developer C2CA Technology and in property technology investor Fifth Wall.

House building campaign expected to boost cement demand in Indonesia

04 February 2025

Indonesia: A government scheme to build three millions houses per year is expected to boost demand for cement. Special envoy for climate change and energy, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, said that the country had secured financing from Qatar to construct four to six million housing units, according to Antara. An agreement has been secured with the UAE to build one million houses. Hashim also mentioned that countries including China, Türkiye, India and Singapore had expressed interest in investing. The government’s housing budget plan for 2025 is currently valued at around US$310m.

MCi Carbon secures US$5m investment from Mitsubishi UBE Cement

31 January 2025

Japan/Australia: Mitsubishi UBE Cement Corporation (MUCC) has invested US$5m in cleantech firm MCi Carbon, becoming the fourth major Japanese investor alongside ITOCHU Corporation, Mizuho Bank and Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank.

The partnership includes a collaboration agreement focusing on mineral carbonation technology and a three-way memorandum of understanding with ITOCHU Corporation.

MUCC will utilise MCi's technology to decarbonise cement production in Japan through CO2 emissions abatement and development of low-carbon materials.

The investment supports the commissioning of MCi's 'Myrtle' mineral carbonation demonstration plant in Australia.

Adani Group to invest US$577m in Chhattisgarh cement plant expansion

13 January 2025

India: The Adani Group will invest US$577m to develop and expand its cement plants in Bhatapara and Jamul, according to the Economic Times. The expansion at the Bhatapara unit has already been announced.

This comes as part of an announcement by chair Gautam Adani to invest a total of US$7bn in the state, with US$6.9bn going to the expansion of power plants in Raipur, Korba and Raigarh.

Afghan government notes investment in cement sector

26 December 2024

Afghanistan: The office of the deputy prime minister for economic affairs says that the country has invested over US$600m in the cement sector since the Taliban administration took charge in 2021. It cited a US$1m renovation project at the Jabal Saraj cement plant in Parwan province, according to National Afghanistan TV and the BBC. Future investment projects are also planned for Jabal Saraj as well as the Temtaq plant in Jowzjan province and the Herat cement factory in Herat province.

At present the local cement sector has a reported production capacity of 5Mt/yr.

Cimpor to invest €1.4bn in Portugal by 2030

11 December 2024

Portugal: Cimpor plans to invest €1.4bn in its Portuguese cement assets by 2030, focusing on infrastructure, technology and new products to address decarbonisation, described as the ‘number one challenge’ by CEO Cevat Mert, according to Noticias Financieras news.

In October 2024, Cimpor announced an investment of €360m in decarbonisation and innovation projects by 2026, including €180m allocated to its Alhandra plant in Lisbon. The company also aims to expand into more markets beyond the 14 it currently serves. It has invested €20-25m in a terminal at the port of Bristol in the UK, and has plans for France and the US. Ignacio Gomez, Cimpor’s commercial manager, cited this shift towards Europe and the US due to stricter environmental requirements.

India: Adani Group has announced a US$750m investment in Rajasthan, with US$375m allocated over the next five years to green energy, cement production and infrastructure development. The group plans to add four cement units, increasing its total capacity by 6Mt/yr, according to BusinessWorld magazine.
