Kant Cement begins development of new limestone mine

18 July 2022

Kyrgyzstan: Kant Cement has begun excavating the Severnaya Gryada limestone deposit near to its Kant cement plant. The producer says that the limestone has a higher purity than that from its existing Agalatas mine. It therefore expects the Kant plant to reduce its raw materials consumption and eliminate a part of its dust emissions. Kant Cement currently replaces a part of the limestone in the plant’s cement production with 65,000t/yr of fly ash.

Popular Cement Industries wins Sindh mine case

Pakistan: Popular Cement Industries has won a court case against Gatron Group, which the cement company claimed was intruding upon a mine held under lease by it. The Business Recorder newspaper has reported that Gatron Group began construction of a partition wall across the mine. The judge ruled that Popular Cement Industries inherited its lease from Dadabhoy Cement in 1986.

Continental to acquire NorrVulk

Sweden: Germany-based Continental has signed an agreement to acquire belt systems supplier and service company NorrVulk. NorrVulk employs 16 people and is focused on the Northern Swedish market. It will join Continental’s 16-country, 5800-employee conveying solutions unit.

Eco Material Technologies secures Georgia Power ash mining contract

30 June 2022

US: Eco Material Technologies has won a contract with Georgia Power to mine 600,000t/yr from the energy company’s Plant Bowen ash dump in Cartersville, Georgia. Eco Material Technologies will use the ash to produce its 99% reduced-CO2 building materials, including an alternative cement with 20% greater compressive strength than ordinary Portland cement (OPC) after 28 days, according to the company.

Grant Quasha, CEO of Eco Material Technologies, said "As the largest partnership of its kind in the US, this project will not only use material from landfills and ash ponds, but also keep millions of tonnes of CO2 from going into the atmosphere."

Locals disrupt operations at JSW Cement’s Khatkurbahal mine

28 June 2022

India: Protestors have halted mining operations at JSW Cement’s Khatkurbahal mine in Odisha, which serves the company’s Sundargarh cement plant. The New Indian Express newspaper has reported that the protestors accuse the company of mining and dumping overburden on neighbouring agricultural land, damaging properties with debris from blasts, drying up six wells and creating excessive dust pollution. The protestors also complained that the mine has failed to create new jobs for local people.

Eco Material Technologies opens pozzolan mine

US: Eco Material Technologies, a producer of sustainable cementitious materials, has opened its Kirkland Pozzolan Mine in Yavapai County, Arizona. The 40-hectare site is one of the largest natural pozzolan mines in the US.
"We are excited for the opening of the Kirkland Pozzolan Mine, which will benefit not only Yavapai County but all of Arizona as well as the surrounding region," said Grant Quasha, CEO of Eco Material Technologies. "Without the support of elected officials, including Governor Doug Ducey, Senator Mark Kelly, State Senator Karen Fann and State Representative Quang Nguyen, we would not be celebrating this milestone achievement."

The event also recognised the hard work and dedication of the plant's employees, as well as Eco Material's contributions to the area including bringing wireless internet service to the surrounding community, planting new trees and generating significant tax revenue for the state.

Tamil Nadu Federation of Panchayat Presidents protests alleged unlawful cement plant practices

14 June 2022

India: The Tamil Nadu Federation of Panchayat Presidents, an overarching organisation for local government leaders, has begun a protest against unlawful cement plant practices in the state. The New Indian Express newspaper has reported that the federation’s president Sellam Kadamban said that limestone mines and trucks are operating illegally, creating pollution and traffic collisions.

Progressive Planet Solutions develops new supplementary cementitious material from diatomaceous earth

10 June 2022

Canada: Progressive Planet Solutions has successfully produced a new supplementary cementitious material (SCM) called PozDE from diatomaceous earth. The company says that it developed PozDE using calcium bentonite-containing diatomaceous earth from the Red Lake mine in Kamloops, British Colombia. The SCM’s seven-day and 28-day strength activity index (SAI) values are 101% and 120% those of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) respectively, while its water demand is lower at 98%.

Chief operating officer Ian Grant said “It is uncommon to see SCMs exceed the 7-day strength of the control Portland, so we are excited to see better strength while indicating lower water demand."

Cemex USA applies for mining permit supporting Lyons cement plant to 2037

06 May 2022

US: Cemex USA has applied for a permit to continue mining at Dowe Flats to support operations at its integrated Lyons cement plant in Colorado. It has asked the Boulder County Community Planning and Permitting department to allow it continue mining for 15 years until 2037, according to the Daily Camera newspaper. It then says it will close the cement plant. Its existing mining permit will end later in 2022.

Xinjiang Tianshan Cement to establish 40Mt/yr limestone mine in Guichi District

28 April 2022

China: Xinjiang Tianshan Cement, a subsidiary of Chizhou CNBM New Materials, has acquired mining rights for the Hengshan mining area and peripheral mines in Chizhou City’s Guichi District in Anhui province for US$376m. Reuters has reported that the company plans to make a total investment of US$1.38bn in establishing its mining operations there. The mines have limestone reserves of 513Mt and will be operational until 2043.
