Martin Engineering launches N2 monitoring system in Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia
08 June 2022World: US-based Martin Engineering has announced the launch of its N2 remote monitoring system on European, Middle Eastern, African and South Asian markets. The system's position indicator works with any belt cleaner with a polythene blade, delivering continuous, real time feedback to the user.
Martin Engineering’s Europe, Middle East, Africa and India (EMEAI) regional vice president Robert Whetstone said “With this smart yet simple upgrade, the technology does the legwork, providing real-time data on each belt cleaner blade to give an early indication of when servicing is needed. In the meantime, plant managers can be confident that material carryback, spillage and build-up is being controlled by the belt cleaner so they can keep the plant running to maximise productivity.”
France: Logistics software provider Everysens says that its Transport & Visibility Management System (TVMS) product has helped Ciments Calcia to improve its use of railway transportation. Philippe Labbé, the logistics director for the subsidiary of Germany-based Heidelberg Cement, said that the company had been using the software for three years. During which time it increased its productivity and saved time on the operational management of rail logistics. Labbé added that he thought the product would help the company meet its decarbonisation commitments by switching more trucks to rail.
Ciments Calcia originally chose Everysens to digitise of use of railway transport, to bring all the relevant data on to one platform and to improve its management of it. The building materials manufacturer sells around 5.3Mt/yr of cement and it operates 10 production sites. It uses over 400 railway wagons in France and Belgium.
US: Buzzi Unicem USA plans to switch from producing Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) to Portland Limestone Cement (PLC) at all of its plants by the end of 2022. It said that it intends to transition from traditional ASTM C150 type I and II (OPC) cements in favour of ASTM C595 type IL cement (PLC). So far its Cape Girardeau and Festus plants in Missouri, Greencastle plant in Indiana, Maryneal plant in Texas and Pryor plant in Oklahoma have already completed the move to the PLC. The San Antonio plant in Texas will complete its transition in June 2022, the Chattanooga plant in Tennessee will switch its product line by September 2022 and the Stockertown cement plant in Pennsylvania will complete its conversion later in 2022. The company added that its engineers will continue working to increase the limestone content in cement by up to the permitted 15% and develop High Early Limestone cement, along with other new cement products with reduced clinker content.
Brazil: The Falcão Bauer Quality Institute (IFBQ) has certified LafargeHolcim Brasil’s CP III-32 blast furnace slag cement for all construction applications. The certificate confirms that the product offers 50% reduced CO2 compared to the average cement on the Brazilian market.
The Jornal Dia Dia newspaper has reported that sustainability manager Bruno Hallak said “The IFBQ is an institution recognised by the market and this certification confirms that we are on the right track. The production processes and methodologies evaluated can even be reproduced in other units, according to their local characteristics, increasing the gain for the environment.”
LafargeHolcim Brasil previously obtained IFBQ certification for its CP III-40 blast furnace slag cement, which offers a slightly less reduced clinker factor than CP III-32 cement, in 2021. It was the first cement of its type in Brazil to receive the certification. The company produces both cements at its Vitória grinding plant in Espírito Santo.
Argentina: Holcim Argentina has published its 10th Sustainable Development Report, detailing its sustainability progress in 2021. That year, it reduced its CO2 emissions per tonne of cementitious material by 4.2% compared to 2017, to 505kg/t from 527kg/t. It sourced 43% of all electricity used in its operations renewably and achieved 8.4% alternative fuel (AF) substitution in its cement production. During the year, Holcim implemented ECO-labels to designate products with at least 30% CO2 emissions reduction.
Holcim Argentina’s CEO Christian Dedeu said “This decade of reports demonstrates our strong commitment to sustainability and governance that considers economic, social and environmental impacts. The conviction of the importance of reviewing performance and being accountable for our impacts made it possible.”
Mexico: Cemex and Coolbrook have signed a memorandum of understanding to test technology to electrify the cement kiln heating process. Coolbrook says that its Roto Dynamic Heater (RDH) technology can heat a cement kiln to 1700°C using electrical power. If generated from renewable sources this could potentially remove around 45% of the carbon emissions in cement production that normally arise from the use of fossil fuels. The companies expect the technology to be ready for commercial use at an industrial scale in 2024. They will jointly evaluate the best production site to test and develop this technology.
Ilpo Kuokkanen, the executive chair of Coolbrook, said "Coolbrook has set a target to build a comprehensive ecosystem around its revolutionary technology and to test its use in as many industrial processes as fast as possible. Together with Cemex, we can bring the technology to cement production and achieve significant emission reductions in one of the most energy and CO2-intensive industrial processes.”
Finland-based Coolbrook is a technology and engineering company that is developing processes to replace the burning of fossil fuels in major industrial sectors. Its RDH has potential applications in cement, steel and chemical production process. Its Roto Dynamic Reactor (RDR) is intended to eliminate CO2 emissions from the steam cracking process used in the production of plastic.
UK: A team of researchers from six UK universities has filed a patent for a clinkerless cement product called Cambridge Electric Cement. Local press has reported that the project, called UK Fires, saw researchers successfully produce the cement using renewable power from recycled cement powder and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS). Following its successes, UK Fires has obtained a further Euro2m in funding from the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) to continue its work into the range of concrete wastes suitable for use in Cambridge Electric Cement production.
Mexico: Cemex intends for its Vertua products to account for over half of all of its cement and concrete sales by 2025. The Vertua range was launched in 2020 and its cement and concrete products accounted for 34% and 31% of total sales respectively in the first quarter of 2022. Vertua products have a CO2 reduction of at least 25% compared to traditional cements. For concrete the CO2 reduction ranges from 30% up to a full net-zero option.
References for Vertua concrete include La Marseillaise, a skyscraper in Marseille, the HS2 high-speed railway in London, the Querétaro-Irapuato highway in Mexico, the San Diego State University stadium in California and the Pereira shopping centre in Colombia. Vertua cement and concrete products have been launched in Colombia, Croatia, the Czech Republic, the Dominican Republic, Egypt, France, Germany, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, the Philippines, Poland, Puerto Rico, Spain, the US, the UK and the UAE.
Argos USA launches EcoStrong PLC
04 May 2022US: Argos USA has launched its new Portland Limestone Cement (PLC) brand EcoStrong.The company says the its will complete its conversion to 100% EcoStrong PLC cement production across all facilities in 2023.Its Roberta, Alabama cement plant and Atlanta, Georgia grinding plant will transition by mid-2022, while its Newberry, Florida cement plant will transition by October 2022.Argos USA plans to use EcoStrong cement at all of its Eastern US ready-mix concretesites by mid-2022.
Cement technical director Steve Wilcox said“I am excited to be part of Argos’ brand announcement for our PLC Type IL product. EcoStrong PLC encompasses everything we have worked for over the past decade, to offer a high-quality product with lower embodied carbon, which contributes to the ultimate goal of decarbonising across our operations.
