JSW Infrastructure to build US$495m port of Keni

India: JSW Group subsidiary JSW Infrastructure has won a contract to build a new deep-water port at Keni in Karnataka on a public-private partnership (PPP) basis. India Blooms News Service has reported that the port will support export terminals for local cement plants and limestone mines, alongside other industries.

Heidelberg Materials Sement Norge lifts absorber unit into place for Brevik cement plant carbon capture system

29 August 2023

Norway: Heidelberg Materials Sement Norge set in place a 220t absorber unit at its Brevik cement plant on late August 2023. The unit will form part of the upcoming 400,000t/yr carbon capture and storage (CCS) installation at the site. It expects to complete the installation of the absorber unit within two weeks of its placement. In September 2023, Heidelberg Materials Sement Norge will proceed to install the system’s 100m-high absorber stack.

Brevik CCS operational manager Tor Gautestad said “The absorber is in many ways the heart of the carbon capture process, because it is where the flue gases are separated.”

Cockburn Cement awards new US$68m contract to SIMPEC for Kwinana grinding plant expansion

Australia: Construction company SIMPEC, a subsidiary of WestStar, has won a new US$68m contract to work on the on-going expansion of Cockburn Cement’s Kwinana grinding plant. The work involves the construction of two 100t/hr grinding units, a 110,000t raw materials store and a reclamation system. Business News has reported that the total value of the Kwinana grinding plant expansion is US$249 - 272m. Cockburn Cement has committed total investments of US$129m to the project, of which US$7.44m consists of an existing contract with SIMPEC.

SIMPEC managing director Mark Dimasi said "This new contract demonstrates the company's track record of delivering for its clients. We are very pleased to secure this work and are committed to maintaining a long-standing relationship with Cockburn Cement and Adbri. I would like to thank Cockburn Cement for this opportunity to deliver such a high-profile local project and would also like to thank our team for their commitment in helping secure this contract.”

Mark Irwin, CEO of Cockburn Cement’s parent company Adbri said "The balance of work for the agreed scope remains consistent with Adbri's previously announced cost estimate and project schedule for the Kwinana Upgrade Project."

Southern Province Cement takes US$373m loan for Jizan cement plant project

26 June 2023

Saudi Arabia: Southern Province Cement has secured a loan worth US$373m from Saudi National Bank. The loan will cover its construction of a 5000t/day production line at its upcoming Jizan cement plant, as well as the construction of infrastructure for a second new line of the same capacity at the plant. The producer appointed China-based Sinoma International Engineering to build the plant in May 2023.

Reuters has reported that the loan has a duration of 10 years and a two-year grace period.

China Energy to accelerate Samarkand cement plant construction for commissioning in 2024

19 June 2023

Uzbekistan: China Energy and the government of Uzbekistan have set a resolution to inaugurate the upcoming 3Mt/yr Samarkand cement plant before the end of 2024. Within the same timeframe, China Energy will launch 400MW-worth of new solar power plants in Bukhara and Kashkadarya. The China-based utilities company will subsequently expand its solar power capacity in Uzbekistan to 1000GW.

Uzbekistan Daily News has reported that China Energy and the government committed to cooperating further on the development of a programme for the implementation of joint projects, including more new 'production plants' and renewable energy infrastructure.

Marmara Çimento to build cement plant in Istanbul Region

08 June 2023

Türkiye: Marmara Çimento has secured environmental clearance to build a new cement plant at Çiftalan in Istanbul Region. PortsEurope News has reported that the plant is associated with a US$3.08m port construction project called the Çiftalan Marmara Cement Port project. Marmara Çimento submitted plans for the project in December 2021. The planned port will have sufficient berth for two 200m vessels to dock.

Marmara Çimento says that the upcoming Çiftalan plant will supply cement for use in the Kanal Istanbul Black Sea-Marmara shipping canal project.

Andhra Pradesh government commences Machilipatnam Port construction

22 May 2023

India: The government of Andhra Pradesh broke ground on the construction of the 35.1Mt/yr-capacity Machilipatnam Port in Krishna District on 22 May 2023. The New Indian Express newspaper has reported that the project is scheduled for completion in mid-2025. When operational, the Port will handle despatches of cement and clinker by local producers.

Hanson UK's Padeswood carbon capture project proceeds to due diligence phase

31 March 2023

UK: Hanson UK says that its planned installation of a carbon capture system at its Padeswood cement plant in Flintshire has proceeded to the due diligence and negotiations stage. The project aims to achieve net zero CO2 cement production by capturing 800,000t/yr of CO2. It is part of the HyNet North West array of projects, which combines green hydrogen and carbon capture to build a first-of-its-kind industrial decarbonisation cluster.

Hanson UK CEO Simon Willis said “I would like to thank the government and all of those that supported us in our bid to receive funding which will enable us to help decarbonise the construction industry and meet our overall ambition to become a net zero business. This global exemplar project will provide net zero construction materials for major projects across the country, from new offshore wind farms and nuclear power stations to clean transport infrastructure.”

Mexican President accuses US government of financing environmentalists

24 March 2023

Mexico: President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has accused the US government of funding environmentalists' challenges to the government's planned Tren Maya tourist railway project. AP News has reported that López Obrador has declared the project a matter of national security.

Cemex is currently embroiled in a dispute with Vulcan Materials subsidiary Sac-Tun over use of the latter's Punta Venado terminal in Quintana Roo. The terminal sits along the planned route of the Tren Maya line. The Mexican State Prosecutor's Office supported Cemex's re-entry into the terminal on 14 March 2023. The government previously rejected Sac-Tun's application to renew its quarrying licence for its quarry at the site of the terminal.

Saudi Arabia: Eastern Province Cement has invited contractors to bid for work on the construction of its planned 10,000t/day Najibiyah clinker plant.

Trade Arabia News has reported that the producer also plans to upgrade multiple decommissioned lines at its 3.5Mt/yr Al Khursaniyah cement plant.
