LafargeHolcim España to invest Euro4m in Sagunto cement plant

Spain: LafargeHolcim España plans to spend Euro4m on upgrades to its Sagunto cement plant, according to the Las Provincias newspaper. The work will include automating the laboratory, adding a new control system for the plant, making environmental changes, improving lighting and acoustics and remodelling the unit’s white cement line.

ACICO Cement orders mill from Cemengal

Kuwait: ACICO Cement has ordered a second cement grinding mill from Spain’s Cemengal. The main equipment to be included in the contract includes a 5200 Kws ball mill with all the peripheral equipment from Cemengal and a fourth generation classifier from Magotteaux XP4i-130 for high strength cements. The projected grinding capacity will be 1Mt/yr of cement and the plant will be commissioned within the first half of 2020.

The project scope will include full engineering and complete supply of mechanical, process, electrical and automation equipment as well as the steel manufacturing from the raw materials handling areas up to the cement silos discharge. Site supervision, training and& commissioning will also be provided by Cemengal.

Cemengal confirmed as mill supplier for Cementos Melón’s grinding plant at Punta Arenas

Chile: Spain’s Cemengal has been confirmed as the supplier of a mill for Cementos Melón’s grinding plant at Punta Arenas. The unit will use a Plug & Grind Xtreme modular grinding plant. The contract includes all the mechanical, electrical and automation equipment required for a 0.3Mt/yr modular ball mill and a classifier. Cemengal will deliver the mill by the end of 2019 to allow first cement and commissioning of the plant in the first quarter of 2020.

Tudela Veguín buys lime producer Caleras de San Cucao

Spain: Cementos Tudela Veguín has purchased a full stake in Caleras de San Cucao, a lime producer based in Asturias, according to the La Nueva España newspaper. No value for the acquisition has been disclosed. The company operates a lime plant at Llanera and it runs two lime quarries at Agüera and Las Regueras. Cementos Tudela Veguín has a lime production capacity of 0.6Mt/yr from its Tudela Veguín plant in Oviedo.

LafargeHolcim España restores land at Jerez plant’s quarry

Spain: LafargeHolcim España has restored land at a quarry near its Jerez de la Frontera cement plant in Cadiz. As part of biodiversity improvement project it has recovered 45 hectares of land and planted around 35,000 trees.

Cemex fined Euro52,000 for quarry emissions in Spain

Spain: The Department of the Environment has fined Cemex España Euro52,000 for emissions from two of its limestone and marl quarries in Valencia. The cement producer is being penalised for dust emissions from the sites, according to the El Mercantil Valenciano newspaper.

Cemex to convert Gádor cement plant site for renewables, waste recycling and concrete

11 January 2019

Spain: Cemex has signed a Euro117m deal with the local government to convert the land used by the Gádor cement plant in Almeria for use by new projects. These will include projects in solar and wind power generation, waste fuel production from plastics and biomass and a new concrete batching plant, according to Teleprensa. The initiative is intended to create around 400 jobs.

The cement producer has also signed a similar agreement for its Lloseta in Baleares. The company announced in mid-October 2018 that it was planning to close the two plants due to reduced demand for cement and mounting European CO2 emissions regulations.

Cementos Portland Valderrivas Alcalá de Guadaíra plant announces winners of children’s painting competition

25 December 2018

Spain: Cementos Portland Valderrivas’ (CPV) Alcalá de Guadaíra plant has awarded first place in its children’s painting competition to Eva María Gómez, a student at the nearby CEIP Ángeles Martín Mateo primary school. The student depicted the daily work conducted at the plant in vibrant colours. Second place went to Lucía López from the same school. Special mention was also made to Ainhoa Manzano. The competition was run with the Andalusian Foundation for Cement and Environment (FLACEMA).

Cementos Cosmos fined Euro3000 for dust emissions from Córdoba plant

11 December 2018

Spain: The regional government of Andalucia has fined Cementos Cosmos’ Córdoba plant Euro3000 for dust emissions in September 2016. The local environmental board criticised the subsidiary of Brazil’s Votorantim for only reporting the incident after the board contacted the plant about a dust cloud, according to the ABC newspaper. However, the fine was small because the dust pollution had no effects on the environment or local residents.

Spanish cement export market expected to fall by 20% in 2019

04 December 2018

Spain: Jesús Ortiz, the president of Oficemen the Spanish cement association, forecasts that exports of cement will drop by 20% year-on-year in 2019. He has blamed the situation on high electricity prices, according to the El Economista newspaper. He predicts that the local industry will have a capacity utilisation rate of 53% in 2019. He added that residential house construction was growing, but that the share of non-residential building had fallen.
