Canada: Holcim has announced its acquisition of Mathers Group’s quarry and asphalt assets in Quebec. The group says that the acquisition will accelerate its development of local circular construction practices by expanding its recycled concrete offering.

Vietnam increases cement production by 6.9% in first half of 2022

30 June 2022

Vietnam: Vietnam National Cement Association (VNCA) members increased their cement production to 59.8Mt in the first half of 2022, up by 6.9% year-on-year from 55.9Mt in the first half of 2021. Vietnam News Brief Service has reported that producers’ June 2022 volumes were 11Mt, up by 13% year-on-year from 9.76Mt in June 2021. Full-year production was 101Mt in 2021.

UltraTech Cement imports Russian coal using Chinese Yuan

30 June 2022

India: UltraTech Cement has imported a 157,000t shipment of coal from Russia for US$25.8m, which it paid in Chinese Yuan. ET NOW News has reported that this is the first instance of an Indian entity using the currency in international trade. The deal has a value of US$164/t, 50% below average South African coal prices and 20% below average Australian cement prices in India. The deal reportedly signals the possible end of Indian coal prince inflation in the medium – long term.

Xinjiang Tianshan Cement to invest US$300m in Chizhou CNBM New Materials

China: Xinjiang Tianshan Cement has announced plans to invest US$300m into its new materials subsidiary Chizhou CNBM New Materials. The company says that it has increased its planned investments in its Hengshan limestone mine project by 15% to US$1.58bn from US$1.37bn.

Dangote Cement’s gas transition reduces power costs by 45% in Tanzania

Tanzania: Dangote Cement says that the use of gas generators in its Mtwara cement plant’s equipment and lorries has reduced fuel costs by 45% over the 15-month period since its transition in March 2021. The Citizen newspaper has reported that company recorded total savings over the period up to 30 June 2022. The producer plans to establish a compressed natural gas (CNG) filling station in Dar es Salaam. Its operations remain 70% reliant on rental vehicles that run on oil.

Eco Material Technologies secures Georgia Power ash mining contract

30 June 2022

US: Eco Material Technologies has won a contract with Georgia Power to mine 600,000t/yr from the energy company’s Plant Bowen ash dump in Cartersville, Georgia. Eco Material Technologies will use the ash to produce its 99% reduced-CO2 building materials, including an alternative cement with 20% greater compressive strength than ordinary Portland cement (OPC) after 28 days, according to the company.

Grant Quasha, CEO of Eco Material Technologies, said "As the largest partnership of its kind in the US, this project will not only use material from landfills and ash ponds, but also keep millions of tonnes of CO2 from going into the atmosphere."

Vietnamese cement exporters to focus on domestic market

29 June 2022

Vietnam: Brokerage company Mirae Asset Securities Vietnam (MASVN) expects cement producers that specialise in exports to switch to the domestic market due to reduced demand in China. The export market to China has slowed down due its Zero-Covid policy and a reduced real estate market, according to the Viet Nam News newspaper. Major local exporters include Vissai Ninh Binh, Hoang Mai and Thanh Thang. China accounted for 40% of Vietnam’s cement exports in 2021. If these companies switch to the local market then it is expected to create more competition for producers that are more domestically aligned, including Vicem Ha Tien, FICO and Holcim Vietnam

Nuvoco Vistas launches Double Bull cement brand in northern India

29 June 2022

India: Nuvoco Vistas is promoting its products in Northern India with the launch of its Double Bull cement brand in the region. As part of the initiative it has increased its dealer network in the states of Haryana, Western Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Delhi and Madhya Pradesh. It is also preparing to build a 1.2Mt/yr grinding plant at Bhiwani in Haryana to support its presence in the north of the country.

The cement producer manufactures Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC), Portland Slag Cement (PSC), Portland Pozzolana Cement (PPC) and Portland Composite Cement (PCC) products. Its flagship brands include the Concreto, Duraguard and Double Bull products.

Pakistan producers obliged to include tax stamp on cement bags from October 2022

Pakistan: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has ordered cement producers to ensure that all cement bags that leave manufacturing sites include a tax stamp or unique identification marking from October 2022. The new requirement is intended to allow for the electronic monitoring of production and sales of goods, according to the Pakistan Today newspaper. This is part of a set of measures designed to increase tax revenue, reduce counterfeit products and stop smuggling.

Korra Energi awarded contract to build waste heat recovery unit at Suez Cement’s Helwan plant

29 June 2022

Egypt: Korra Energi has been awarded a contract to build a 20MW waste heat recovery (WHR) unit at Suez Cement’s Helwan plant. The WHR unit will serve both of the plant’s two production lines. Korra Energi says it will be the first WHR project for a cement company in the country. Korra Energi is an Egypt-based engineering company and a subsidiary of conglomerate Korra.
