Azerbaijan: The US-based American Petroleum Institute (API) has certificated Norm Cement’s cement plant in Baku’s Garadagh district. The Turan Information Agency News has reported that the certificate confirms that the plant meets the highest standard for oil well cement. This will enable the company to begin the export of oil well cement produced at the plant.

Saudi Arabia: Northern Region Cement has begun oil well cement production at its 2Mt/yr-capacity Arar integrated cement plant in Northern Borders Province. Mubasher News has reported that the company will begin sale of the cement in early 2021. The American Petroleum Institute (API) has certified the product.

Algeria: Groupe des Ciments d’Algérie’s (GICA) Aïn el Kebira cement plant in Setif has been certified by the American Petroleum Institute (API) to produce oil well cement products. It has been award two certificates following a one-year audit, according to the El Moudjahid newspaper. Djamila Tamazirt, Minister of Industry and Mining, who was on a tour of the unit, said that the development would help the country to stop importing oil well cements. The country imports an estimated 0.2Mt/yr of oil well cement at a cost of nearly US$30m.

Kuwait: Kuwait Cement has made its first delivery of oil well cement to National Petroleum Services. It is producing the product at its Shuaiba plant, according to the Arab Times newspaper. It holds API Monogram licencing from American Petroleum Institute (API) to produce this type of cement.

US: LafargeHolcim has received American Petroleum Institute (API) certification to produce oil well cement at its Holcim Theodore plant in Alabama plant. It says it is one of only four cement plants in the country with an API 10A Monogram and Q1 Quality Management System. Production of Class A oil well cement will start immediately at the site and the company plans to add Class H production in the future.

In order to earn the certification, LafargeHolcim spent more than a year in a process of investing in additional testing equipment, developing a quality management system, conducting internal audits and passing an audit by the API. Oil well cement is designed to meet demanding requirements. It is continuously tested for chemistry, thickening time, fluid loss, free fluid, rheology and compressive strength.

Production at the company’s Theodore plant will complement LafargeHolcim’s ability to maintain a consistent supply of oil well cement to customers in the Gulf region and beyond. The company also produces API A and H well cements at its Joppa cement plant in Illinois.

Qatar: Al Khalij Cement Company has obtained certification from the American Petroleum Institute (API) to produce oil well cement. The certification allows it to make Grade (s) HSR class G oil well cement at its Umm Bab plant, according to the Gulf Times newspaper. The API has awarded Al Khalij Cement a three-year licence to apply the API monogram on its products. 11 other companies are certified to produce by the API to produce oil well cement in the Middle East.

UAE: Gulf Cement has received certification from the American Petroleum Institute to produce oil well cement. Its sales revenue fell by 8% year-on-year to US$153m in 2016 from US$167m in 2015 and its profit fell by 30% to US$13.6m from US$19.4m, according to Mubasher. The cement producer operates a plant in Ras Al Khaimah.
