India: Shree Cement is ready to start building a 3Mt/yr grinding plant at Purulia in Bengal. The project has an investment of around US$80m, according to the Times of India newspaper. The cement producer has already purchased the land for the unit and intends to start work on building it from August 2021. It will be the company’s first production plant in the state.
Dalmia Cement (Bharat) to hire more locals
27 January 2021India: Dalmia Bharat subsidiary Dalmia Cement (Bharat) has shifted its recruitment procedures towards hiring more local people in Maharashtra, Bengal, Orissa due to labour shortages throughout the Covid-19 outbreak. The Economic Times newspaper has reported that local labour now makes up a majority of the workforce at multiple cement plants belonging to the company.
Dalmia Bharat group head of human resources Ajit Menon said, "In our Bengal plant, we have 90 - 95% local workers now versus 20 - 25% earlier, while in Orissa it is almost 100% local labour. Covid-19 has accelerated the intake of local workforce.” He added, “This has also given us the opportunity to give employment to people in the locations neighbouring our factories - many of whom are tribal people and are from underprivileged communities."
India: The Confederation of Real Estate Developers’ Association of India (CREDAI) says that rising cement prices threaten Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s affordable residential construction scheme 'Housing for All.’ Nandu Belani, president of the Bengal chapter of CREDAI, said that his organisation had no choice but to pass rising prices on to consumers, according to the Times of India. CREDAI has also accused cement producers of ‘profiteering’ and alleged that they have formed a cartel. The developers argue that the cost of cement production has fallen following the introduction of various government subsidies.
India: Reliance Cement Company, part of the Anil Ambani-controlled Reliance Infrastructure, is looking at a turnover of around US$341m in the current fiscal year on the back of capacity expansion and entry into West Bengal. The company has made a foray into West Bengal, a market with 14Mt/yr of cement demand and the potential to grow by 8%/yr in the coming years.
"We are targeting cement sales of 3.5Mt and a revenue of US$307 - 341m in fiscal 2015," said Reliance Cement Director & CMO Atul Desai. "We hope to cover the entire West Bengal market in fiscal 2015, which is expanding by 8%/yr. We expect to sell 0.6 - 0.7Mt of cement in the state in fiscal 2015."
"West Bengal is one of the largest cement-consuming states in eastern India with a total consumption of around 14Mt/yr," said Reliance Cement Head (East) Deepak Ranjan. He added that Reliance Cement hopes to garner a healthy market share in the region.
Reliance Cement also plans to set up a 2.1Mt/yr cement grinding plant in Raghunathpur, West Bengal. Desai said that the company has 0.40km2 of land and is in the process of getting regulatory clearances for the project.
Reliance Cement has also lined up cement plants in various locations to increase capacity and is in various stages of acquiring limestone mining leases. "The group aims to expand its cement production capacity to 50Mt/yr over the next couple of years," he said.
Ambuja Cements unveils US$365m spending spree
02 January 2013India: Ambuja Cements has announced investments of US$365m in India, of which US$100m is targeted for Bengal. The Indian cement producer intends to try to maintain its market share at 10% until 2018.
The subsidiary of Holcim announced it would invest US$59.2m at a grinding unit in Sankrail to expand its capacity to 2.4Mt/yr from 1.5Mt/yr by 2015. It has also proposed to invest US$41m in another grinding unit in the state at Bandel, according to Bengal industries minister Partha Chatterjee.
"This plant (Sankrail) is working at a capacity of 1.5Mt/yr and we will go up to 2.4Mt/yr. We also have a unit in Farakka with a 1.25Mt/yr capacity. So, with this, we will be one of the largest cement players in Bengal," said Ajay Kapur, CEO of Ambuja Cements.
Ambua Cements also announced that it is yet to gain clearance for the construction of a 3Mt/yr greenfield integrated cement plant in Rajasthan. Ambuja Cements holds a total capacity of 27.25Mt/yr in Rajasthan. A 1.5Mt/yr grinding unit at Sanand, Gujarat, is also being considered.
