Cement Australia partners with Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company for green methanol trial at Gladstone cement plant
28 October 2022Australia: Cement Australia’s Gladstone cement plant in Queensland will host a study of methanol production from green hydrogen and captured CO2. Japan-based Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company will supply its green methanol production technology, while hydrogen and oxygen feedstocks will be sourced locally. Cement Australia and Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company will collaborate on commercialisation of their green methanol. Cement Australia said that carbon capture and its utilisation in value added products is a strategic pillar of the company’s decarbonisation roadmap.
The cement producer said “The Gladstone region is the ideal location for growing a diverse green hydrogen sector, with abundant renewable energy sources, existing infrastructure, including port facilities, and a highly skilled workforce. The green hydrogen economy is a priority for the Queensland government under the Queensland Hydrogen Industry Strategy.”
Cemex increases nine-month 2022 sales and income
27 October 2022Mexico: Cemex sold 47.8Mt of cement in the first nine months of 2022, down by 5.3% year-on-year from 40.5Mt in the same period of 2021. Despite this, its consolidated revenues rose by 8%, to US$11.7bn from US$10.8bn. The group's cost of sales grew by 12% to US$8.09bn from US$7.25bn, and its operating earnings before interest, depreciation, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) dropped by 6.6%. Nonetheless, contributions from discontinued operations led to net income growth of 72%, to US$987m from US$574m.
Cemex said that higher prices in local currency terms drove sales growth across all of its regions. As a percentage of sales, costs grew to 70% from 68%, mainly on account of energy price rises. Operating EBITDA fell across all regions apart from Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia (EMEAA), where it rose by 2.5% to US$524m from US$511m. Cemex noted Europe's 'remarkable resilience' in implementing 'double-digit' price increases to increase earnings, while also crossing a threshold of 40% in CO2 emissions reduction from its 1990 baseline.
Titan Group tightens emissions reduction commitments
27 October 2022Greece: Titan Group has set new CO2 reduction targets by adding Scope 3 emissions. Titan Group had previously committed to a 21% Scope 1 emissions reduction and a 42% Scope 2 emissions reduction per tonne of cementitious material between 2020 and 2030. Titan Group reduced its total CO2 emissions by 20% between 1990 and 2021, and by 5.5% year-on-year in the third quarter of 2022. Its latest targets are currently under review by the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi).
Titan Group chair Marcel Cobuz said “The initiatives in our decarbonisation roadmap offer significant business growth opportunities. Our technology and sales teams across all our markets are focused on decarbonising our operations more quickly and offering our customers more and more sustainable and circular solutions.”
Austria: Rail logistics company ÖBB Rail Cargo Group (RCG) says that its haulage of 80,000t/yr of granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) and clinker to and from w&p Zement's Wietersdorf cement plant in Carinthia by rail has removed 3200 trucks/yr from the road since its start in 2019. RCG's trains deliver the plant's clinker to the Peggau-Deutschfeistritz railway station in Styria, and return to the plant laden with GBFS from steel producer Voestalpine's nearby Leoben refinery.
RCG said that w&p Zement is currently working to increase its operations' reliance on rail, adding "Further innovative transport solutions are already being worked on."
Thomas Gruppe acquires Opterra Zement and Opterra Beton from CRH
26 October 2022Germany: Ireland-based CRH has agreed to sell its subsidiaries Opterra Zement and Opterra Beton to Thomas Gruppe. Thomas Gruppe expects to complete its acquisition of the businesses later in 2022. Opterra Zement owns the 1.4Mt/yr Karsdorf, Saxony-Anhalt, cement plant and 0.5Mt/yr Sötenich, North Rhine-Westphalia, grinding plant, the latter of which is closed. Opterra Beton operates the Neufahrn, Bavaria, ready-mix concrete batching plant.
Thomas Gruppe said "For years, we have been pursuing a steady and long-term growth course in the field of cement and precast and ready-mix concrete. In the cement segment, our competitive position improved significantly with the purchase of the Erwitte (North Rhine-Westphalia) plant in 2017. Together with the grinding plant in Dorndorf (Thuringia), we have achieved a significantly larger area coverage in Germany, and also in the Netherlands, and benefit from synergy effects." It continued "We would like to continue on this growth course. An opportunity like the one to take over the cement plant in Karsdorf does not come often. The Karsdorf plant, with its gigantic limestone deposits, its market position of well over 1Mt/yr of cement and its experienced team, enables us better to supply our customers, and to leverage improvement potential. In addition, Karsdorf is of sufficient size for us to install CO2 separation technology in its production of clinker for the Dorndorf grinding plant." Thomas Gruppe concluded "We are convinced that cement will become a clean building material and believe in its future."
US: The Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA) has signed an international partnership agreement with the American Concrete Institute (ACI). Under the agreement, the partners will collaboratively develop and disseminate information on concrete production and its use in construction, with a view to advancing best practices in sustainability.
The ACI said "ACI cooperates closely with our international partners, benefitting everyone in the global concrete community. ACI looks forward to working with the GCCA towards a future where everyone has the knowledge needed to use the latest concrete technologies effectively to meet the demands of a changing world."
South Africa: Saudi Arabia-based ACWA Power and Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa (IDC South Africa) have partnered to explore the development of green hydrogen infrastructure opportunities in South Africa. Together, they will aim to accelerate the country's transition into a green hydrogen economy across industries including cement production. ACWA Power projected the potential value of developments at US$10bn.
South Africa is committed to achieving net zero CO2 emissions by 2050.
ACWA Power's vice chair and chief executive officer Paddy Padmanathan said "As a company that is driving the energy transition, ACWA Power is proud to work closely with the IDC, with whom we share a robust working history, and today we are delighted to take our collaboration further. I am confident that our expertise in developing mega-scale green hydrogen projects in other geographies will enable us to successfully create a new avenue of sustainable energy generation - one that will pave the path to further progress.”

Votorantim Cimentos will publish details of its plans, which include renewably powered green hydrogen and biofuels production, in early 2023.
Votorantim Cimentos Europe, Asia and Africa CEO Jorge Wagner said "We need agility with the administration, because the investments are stratospheric and long-term. We want to obtain subsidies, taking advantage of European funds." He concluded "We have the opportunity to carry out a very beautiful project in Andalusia and beat the Americans."
Spain: Cementos Portland Valderrivas plans to make Euro6m-worth of investments in its Alcalá de Guadaira cement plant in Seville. The funds will go towards the construction of a refuse-derived fuel (RDF) line to help reduce the plant's petcoke consumption, as well as the renewal of the plant's mining licence for its quarry.
