Europe: Capsol Technologies has been awarded an engineering services agreement for a pre-FEED (front-end engineering design) study on its CapsolEoP carbon capture technology at a cement plant in Europe, aiming to capture 600,000t/yr of CO₂.
Johan Jungholm, chief of business development at Capsol Technologies, said "We are building on our commercial traction within cement, where Capsol has emerged as a preferred carbon capture technology provider. CapsolEoP can operate with up to 50% lower energy use than traditional post-combustion technologies such as amines. This, together with reduced complexity, has the potential of reducing levelised capture costs by 20-60% for cement plant owners looking to decarbonise their operations.”
Lithuania: Capsol Technologies has commenced its first CapsolGo demonstration campaign at the Akmenės Cementas plant in Lithuania, owned by Schwenk, to evaluate its carbon capture technology.
Schwenk plans to test Capsol’s technology at two cement plants, with a combined CO₂ capture potential of 1.5Mt/yr. Following the demonstration campaign at the Akmenės plant in Lithuania, the CapsolGo unit will be transferred to Schwenk’s Brocēni cement plant in Latvia, where a feasibility study was conducted in 2024.
Capsol Technologies to deliver carbon capture project for Holcim
16 December 2024Germany: Capsol Technologies has signed a cooperation agreement with Holcim to deliver a CapsolGo carbon capture demonstration campaign at Holcim’s Dotternhausen plant in southern Germany. The CapsolGo campaign will test Capsol’s carbon capture technology using its hot potassium carbonate (HPC) solvent. Capsol Technologies will provide the demonstration as a turnkey solution, including testing and validation to supply critical data and insight into the technology.
Dieter Schillo, plant manager of Holcim (Süddeutschland), said “The CapsolEoP (End-of-Pipe) unit’s design, requiring no external steam supply and exhibiting low energy consumption, makes it an attractive option for our Dotternhausen plant.”
If successful, Holcim plans to deploy Capsol’s technology across multiple cement plants globally. This builds on a feasibility study conducted by Aggregate Industries UK, a Holcim subsidiary, for the Cauldon cement plant in Stoke-on-Trent. Testing at Dotternhausen will run for four months, starting in the second quarter of 2025.
Germany: Norway-based Capsol Technologies has won a feasibility study from a German cement producer to assess the implementation of its CapsolEoP (End-of-Pipe) technology at a cement plant. The technology aims to capture 400,000t/yr of CO₂.
CEO Wendy Lam said "Capsol continues to build a position as a preferred carbon capture technology provider for the cement industry."
Latvia/Lithuania: Capsol Technologies has won a contract to carry out two CapsolGo carbon capture demonstration campaigns at the Brocēni cement plant in Latvia and the Akmenės Cementas cement plant in Lithuania. Both plants are owned by Germany’s Schwenk Zement. Following a feasibility study earlier in 2024, the demonstrations will run from the fourth quarter of 2024 to the fourth quarter of 2025 and will showcase the CapsolEoP capture technology.
Philipp Staggat, chief product officer of Capsol Technologies, said "CapsolEoP offers lower energy consumption with higher CO2 concentration than competitive technologies, and the capture cost for cement owners is reduced further as it doesn't require external steam supply. We are looking forward to demonstrating our technology on Schwenk's cement plants.”
CEO of Akmenės Cementas, Arturas Zaremba added "In collaboration with our clients and stakeholders, we are dedicated to addressing these challenges. The implementation of CapsolEoP technology at our Latvian and Lithuanian plants is a testament to our commitment, marking a significant stride towards the goal of capturing over 1.5Mt/yr of CO₂.”
UK: Capsol Technologies has been selected to conduct a study on its carbon capture technology at Aggregate Industries Cauldon cement plant in Staffordshire. Owned by the Holcim Group, the company’s plant will undergo a feasibility study by Capsol Technologies for its CapsolEoP® carbon capture system. The potential for carbon capture at this plant is 600,000t/yr of CO₂. The CO₂ captured will be stored geologically through the nearby MNZ Cluster or HyNet North West.
CCO Johan Jungholm said “CapsolEoP® provides a cost-efficient carbon capture solution for cement, and our solution can be run on electricity alone without expensive heat integration or external steam supply. It offers flexibility in the optimisation of the designs, allowing for high capture rates, high reliability and low energy consumption."
The contract includes supplier input for the feasibility study, and further pre-FEED engineering if Capsol's technology is selected. The UK Government's Industrial Energy Transformation Fund (IETF) is funding the study, with Petrofac as Aggregate Industries engineer. This study is part of Peak Cluster's objective to reduce over 3Mt/yr of CO₂ from cement, lime, and refuse facilities by 2030. Capsol Technologies is focusing on the cement industry, which accounts for about 8% of global CO₂ emissions.
Schwenk Latvija trials carbon capture at Brocēni cement plant
12 January 2024Latvia: Schwenk Latvija plans to build a 750,000t/yr carbon capture system at its 2Mt/yr Brocēni cement plant. The producer has hired Norway-based Capsol Technologies to conduct a CapsolEoP carbon capture feasibility study at the plant. Schwenk Latvija is a member of the CCS Baltic Consortium, which achieved provisional inclusion on the European Commission’s list of Projects of Common Interest in November 2023.
Schwenk Northern Europe CEO Reinhold Schneider said “Checking the best carbon capture methods and how they can be integrated with our production process is a crucial task for us on the way to carbon neutrality, and likely the major investment direction for the coming decade. To that end, we are excited to investigate the energy consumption and the scale of equipment required for carbon capture at the Brocēni plant, if potentially partnering with Capsol for this challenge.”
Capsol Technologies CEO Jan Kielland said “We are excited to work with Schwenk, one of the most innovative building materials producers in Europe, which has constantly improved its processes to reduce emissions since operations started at the Brocēni plant’s new kiln line in 2010” He added “With this feasibility study, we are taking another step towards building a position as the preferred carbon capture technology provider for cement.”
Capsol’s project pipeline includes 10 large-scale cement projects in the sales engineering and engineering studies phase. The total CO2 capture capacity of these projects is 11Mt/yr.
Capsol Technologies wins two further carbon capture contracts in Europe
19 September 2023Europe: Norway-based Capsol Technologies says that it has signed contracts for two new feasibility studies for carbon capture installations at ‘large cement plants’ in the EU. If successful, the plants will proceed to the installation of Capsol Technologies’ CapsolEoP carbon capture systems. Nordic Daily News has reported that the technology reduces the energy consumption of carbon capture by 50%, and lowers its costs by 25%, according to the supplier.
The new contracts bring Capsol Technologies’ number of cement industry carbon capture contracts to four, and its total contracts to nine, with a potential CO2 capture capacity of 10Mt/yr.
CEO Jan Kielland said "We are pleased that our solution is gaining attention, as demonstrated by an increasing number of incoming requests for sales engineering and engineering studies, and look forward to being a major contributor in the path to net zero for cement.”
Capsol Technologies to run carbon capture feasibility study at cement plant in Northern Europe
12 July 2023Norway: Capsol Technologies has been awarded a feasibility study for the CapsolEoP (end-of-pipe) carbon capture product at an unnamed cement plant in Northern Europe. The study is for a plant aiming to capture more than 1Mt/yr of CO2. The award is Capsol Technologies’ first paid engineering study on a cement plant. The company says it is seeing an increasing amount of request and sales engineering work in the cement sector and it expects more engineering studies to be awarded going forward.
Jan Kielland, the chief executive officer of Capsol Technologies, said “The fact that the CapsolEoP carbon capture technology is easy to integrate without disrupting the operations of the host plant is an attractive value proposition to these types of facilities. In addition, the emission from a cement plant has a high concentration of CO2 making it especially beneficial for the CapsolEoP technology relative to competing technologies, bringing down the cost per unit CO2 captured.”
Norway-based Capsol Technologies is promoting a solvent/scrubbing-based approach to carbon capture using hot potassium carbonate (HPC). It was awarded a technology licensing agreement for the Stockholm Exergi BEECS (Bioenergy Carbon Capture and Storage) project in July 2022. It has also received orders for its CapsolGo carbon capture demonstration unit in Sweden and Germany.
