Germany: Cemex Deutschland’s carbon capture partner Carbon Clean has hired US-based engineering company KBR to carry out installation of the planned 100t/day CycloneCC carbon capture system at the producer’s Rüdersdorf cement plant in Brandenburg. KBR will provide front-end engineering design (FEED) services for the project.
KBR global technology solutions president Jay Ibrahim said "Reaching net zero targets requires expertise from different industries to work together, and we make a powerful team. Hopefully, it will be the first of many such projects."
Carbon Clean raises US$150m
12 May 2022UK: Carbon capture systems developer Carbon Clean has raised US$150m in its largest funding round to date. US-based energy company Chevron Corporation led the round, with participation from Cemex venture capital subsidiary Cemex Ventures, Marubeni Corporation, WAVE Equity Partners, AXA IM Alts, Samsung Ventures, Saudi Aramco Energy Ventures and TC Energy.
As a result of the new funding, Carbon Clean says that it will now scale the production of its CycloneCC fully modular carbon capture technology, increase investment in research and development grow its team to meet ‘exponential’ demand growth for its products.
LafargeHolcim España launches CCSU joint venture with Carbon Clean and Sistemas de Calor
06 January 2022Spain: LafargeHolcim España has announced the launch of a joint venture called ECCO2 with Carbon Clean and Sistemas de Calor. The joint venture will develop carbon capture technology for use at the producer’s Carboneras cement plant in Almería. It will then seek to market captured CO2 from the plant for use as a gas in local agricultural greenhouses. When commissioned in early 2023, the carbon capture system will have the capacity to capture 10% of the Carboneras plant’s CO2 emissions.
Cemex Zement and Carbon Clean to install carbon capture system at Rüdersdorf cement plant
29 October 2021Germany: Cemex Zement’s Rüdersdorf, Brandenburg, cement plant is to host a new 100t/day carbon capture installation. Cemex Zement will collaborate with UK-based Carbon Clean on a front-end engineering and design (FEED) study for the project. The system will combine captured CO2 with sustainably sourced hydrogen in order to produce green synthetic hydrocarbons. The partners aim to increase the system’s CO2 capture capacity to 300t/day by 2026, before finally scaling it up to 2000t/day.
Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia regional president Sergio Menendez said “This project with Carbon Clean is the latest development in Cemex’s plan to achieve carbon neutrality at the Rüdersdorf cement plant by 2030, through our pioneering carbon neutral alliance with expert industrial consortiums. Carbon capture will play a fundamental role in the efforts to succeed at this goal and ensure our operations are more sustainable.”
Cemex Ventures invests in Carbon Clean
04 August 2021Mexico/UK: Cemex Ventures has become an investor in Carbon Clean. It joins existing investors Equinor Ventures, ICOS Capital and WAVE Equity Partners. The companies have invested US$8m in Carbon Clean extending its US$22m series B investment round, previously announced in July 2020, to US$30m in total. Cemex’s investment is part of its strategy to achieve its new climate action goals, including being net carbon neutral in concrete by 2050, under its Future in Action programme.
Carbon Clean has developed a modular CO2 capture and separation technology that it calls CycloneCC. As well as reducing the size of installation and construction time, it is aiming to reduce operating expenditures to around US$30/t of CO2 at an industrial scale. In 2020, the subsidiary of Cemex signed an agreement with Carbon Clean, which allowed the companies to outline a roadmap for jointly developing and implementing carbon capture technologies across cement operations.
Carbon Clean partners with BayoTech for carbon capture and storage from hydrogen production
06 May 2021North America: UK-based Carbon Clean has signed a memorandum of understanding with US-based onsite hydrogen provider BayoTech. Under the agreement, the carbon capture and storage (CCS) specialist will install a CCS system at a BayoTech hydrogen plant in North America, which is expected to be operational by the end of 2022.
The two companies have agreed on a roadmap for the technology integration of a carbon capture process on their hydrogen generating units. The demonstration facility will include a BayoTech H2-1000 generating unit and Carbon Clean’s carbon capture technology. This partnership is intended to enable process optimisation to decrease the cost for small scale hydrogen and CO2 production.
Carbon Clean was announced in April 2021 as the technology provider for a CO2 capture demonstration project by Taiheiyo Cement in Japan. It is also working on projects with Cemex USA and LafargeHolcim España.
Taiheiyo Cement to start CO2 capture project at Kumagaya plant using Carbon Clean technology
21 April 2021Japan: Taiheiyo Cement plans to start a CO2 capture demonstration project at its Kumagaya plant in Kumagaya City, Saitama. It will use technology for CO2 chemical absorption supplied by UK-based Carbon Clean, which has been awarded by Japan-based Marubeni Protechs in Japan. The project will have a capacity of 10t/day and demonstration tests will begin in September 2021. Taiheiyo Cement says that it believes that CO2 recovery technology from cement kiln flue gas will require compact equipment that could be installed in cement plants and that suitable amine solvents for cement kiln flue gas are essential conditions. Its ultimate goal is to establish a technology that can be used to help it reach carbon neutrality by 2050.
The cement producer has been developing this technology as a sole grant recipient of the ‘Development of Carbon Circulation Technology for the Cement Industry,’ a project funded by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) which was awarded in June 2020. It also launched its internal Carbon Neutral Technology Development Project Team in April 2020, which has led on the project.
Marubeni Protechs, a wholly owned subsidiary of Marubeni Corporation, which invested in Carbon Clean, have been involved in a variety of domestic and international projects involving equipment supply and construction. The project at the Kumagaya plant is expected to be the first CO2 capture plant that Marubeni Protechs and Carbon Clean have introduced in Japan. Marubeni Protechs and Carbon Clean intend to jointly introduce CO2 capture plants in the future.
Cemex USA receives US Department of Energy grant for carbon capture technology study
09 February 2021US: The US Department of Energy has awarded a grant to Cemex USA, UK-based carbon capture and storage (CCS) specialist Carbon Clean and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The grant covers the implementation of a CCS system at Cemex USA’s Victorville cement plant in California, in addition to the development of a commercially viable carbon utilisation solution. The producer says that the study is due to last 30 months.
President Jaime Muguiro said, “Cemex is committed to being part of the solution to reduce carbon emissions globally and to deliver net-zero CO2 concrete to all of our customers by 2050. We cannot achieve these aims without innovative technology and collaborative relationships with both public and private organizations who share a commitment to climate action. LafargeHolcim España and Carbon Clean sign carbon capture agreement
04 November 2020Spain: LafargeHolcim España has signed an agreement with Carbon Clean, ECCO2 and gas systems specialist Sistemas de Calor for the installation of a carbon capture and storage (CCS) unit at its Carboneras integrated cement plant in Almeria. The company say that the installation will start in 2022 to capture 10% of CO2 emissions with the eventual potential to capture 0.7Mt/yr of CO2 and achieve 100% decarbonisation at the plant. The producer will supply the captured CO2 to Sistemas de Calor for use in agricultural greenhouses, reducing the soil and water intensity of crop production.
Chief executive officer (CEO) Isidoro Miranda said, “Within the framework of our Ecological Transition Strategy, we are tackling climate change through innovative initiatives that allow us to develop low-carbon products and solutions. In our journey towards carbon neutrality, these types of collaborations are key. We hope that, working with our partners Carbon Clean, ECCO2 and Sistemas de Calor, we can develop this innovative circular model with the potential to revolutionise the cement sector and agriculture.”
On 20 November 2019 LafargeHolcim España committed a budget of around Euro20m to upgrades to reduce its cement plants’ CO2 emissions by 90,000t/yr.
Cemex Ventures partners with Carbon Clean for carbon capture and storage development
18 September 2020Mexico: Cemex subsidiary Cemex Ventures has signed an agreement with US-based carbon capture and storage (CCS) specialist Carbon Clean for the development of a CCS solution for under US$30/t of carbon dioxide (CO2) captured. Cemex cement plants will host the products during pilot testing. Cemex Ventures head Gonzalo Galindo said, “The ambitious target of making carbon capture technology accessible and more efficient would be an unprecedented achievement for the cement sector, opening a door of opportunities for further developments.”
