Richmond plant fire affecting supplies in Vancouver
23 June 2022Canada: Lafarge Canada’s Richmond cement plant, one of the largest in British Columbia, has temporarily cut production, exacerbating a cement and concrete shortage in Vancouver, where some building firms have been forced to halt projects. The Richmond plant has been operating at limited capacity since a fire in the pre-heater tower on 31 May 2022.
Local press reported that the Richmond plant was ‘undergoing electric repairs to an isolated area,’ according to an emailed statement from the company. The company added "We expect to resume full production capacity shortly and are leveraging our strong production and supply network in an effort to minimize impact to our customers."
Australian court finds former AdBri accounts manager guilty of deception and dishonest dealing
31 August 2021Australia: A South Australian court has found former Adbri (formerly called Adelaide Brighton) accounts manager Glenda Burgess guilty of nine counts of deception and nine counts of dishonest dealing between 2009 and 2017. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation has reported that Burgess increased AdBri’s customer Concrete Supply’s credit limits, concealed its debts and created ‘large’ manual entries in her employer’s accounts to benefit it. The company only paid around US$14.5m for cement worth US$23m during the period under investigation. However, the prosecution said that Concrete Supply was not complicit in the alleged crime. Sentencing for the case is due to take place later in 2021.
Australian court rules Adelaide Brighton due US$8.65m
26 December 2019Australia: Adelaide Brighton’s court dispute with Concrete Supply has ended in a ruling in favour of the former. The Advertiser newspaper has reported that between August 2009 and November 2017 Adelaide Brighton supplied US$22.6 to Concrete Supply, for which Concrete Supply paid US$14.5 before entering administration in November 2017. Federal Court judge Anthony Besanko ruled that Concrete Supply ‘could not reasonably have held a genuine belief that it was entitled to the alleged discount or rebate.’
