Holcim España begins consultation on staff reductions at Jerez cement plant for transition to grinding only
20 January 2021Spain: LafargeHolcim subsidiary Holcim España has informed the works council and employees of its Jerez de la Frontera cement plant of possible planned changes to the plant’s production structure. The company intends to convert the cement plant into a grinding-only facility. The reasons for the decision were regional overcapacity, falling export volumes and prices and reduced allocations of EU CO2 emissions credits. It says that under the plan the new grinding plant would continue to serve the market in the region. The communication constitutes the beginning of a collective dismissal process.
General director Isidoro Miranda said that the company wants “to work with the social partners to reach an agreement that allows the continuity of our activity in the town of Jerez.”
German Cement Georgia appoints Sustained Visions for Kaspi plant
13 January 2020Georgia: Germany-based engineering, management and consultancy firm Sustained Visions has announced its appointment by German Cement Georgia for provision of concept development and project management services at its upcoming Kaspi plant. German Cement Georgia plans to commission the plant in early 2020.
Montana Department of Environmental Quality invites comment on Ash Grove Cement shale clay exploration
30 December 2019US: The Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is accepting public comment on a proposed shale-clay exploration project by Ireland-based CRH’s subsidiary Ash Grove Cement near its Clark Gulch quarry. The Observer has reported that the project would consist of construction of a 0.62km road and the extraction and transportation of a 10,000t sample. The window for comment closes on 3 January 2020.
Meetings called for Jura Cement quarry expansion debate
30 September 2019Switzerland: Extraordinary Community Meetings have been scheduled in the municipalities of Veltheim and Auenstein for 22 and 23 January 2020 for further consultations with groups representing opposition to Jura Cement’s Jakobsberg-Egg quarry development plans in both districts. The company is planning a total 10.5ha expansion across both municipalities and an operational change to material processing, beginning in 2022.

Illinois Cement preparing to expand quarry at La Salle plant
29 November 2018US: Illinois Cement is preparing to expand the limestone quarry at its La Salle plant. The company has submitted plans to the local government to build a new quarry to the west and northwest of its existing mine, according to the News tribune newspaper. It also wants to move a road to support the changes. The existing quarry will be closed. The cement producer has held public consultations on the project and the local authorities are considering the plan.
UK: It is hoped that a Euro23m upgrade project at Hanson’s Padeswood cement plant will be completed in early 2019. A planning application will be submitted to the local government in the summer of 2017 following consultation with local residents. The plant intends to install a new vertical roller mill to grind cement and to build a new rail loading facilities at the site.
“The plan is to mothball three of the old mills and install a new vertical roller mill capable of grinding up to 0.65Mt/yr of clinker. The new mill will be fully enclosed in a building, minimising noise and reducing the potential for escape of cement dust,” said plant manager Steve Hall. The project also includes construction of new cement silos alongside the existing railway line to load trains for delivery. At present the rail link is used to bring in coal to fire the kilns. In future, three trains a week will be despatched to Hanson’s depots in London, Bristol and Scotland or around 15% of total cement production.
India: The Pollution Control Board of Assam has held a public hearing on a proposed 1Mt/yr cement plant at Jorabat, Mauza Sonapur in the state of Assam. Locals and Pollution Control Board officials were present during the hearing, where all the stakeholders put forward their opinions on the project. Most local people supported the project, provided that employment was prioritised to nearby villages and within the state, according to the Assam Tribune. Locals also emphasised the importance of the pollution control system of the plant.
KR Associates is planning to build the 500t/day clinker producing plant. It will have a cement grinding production capacity of 500t/day. A 26,850m2 plot of land has been acquired for the plant. The project will use 3600kW of power sourced from the Assam State Electricity Board. Once completed the plant is expected to employ 110 workers. Proposed air pollution control measures for the plant include bag filters and an electrostatic precipitator for the cooler exhaust stack.
