India: Shree Cement plans to mark Vijay Diwas, the Indian commemoration day for the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, with free donations of cement for the families of armed forces personnel who died in battle between 1999 and 2019. Under the Naman scheme, the family or the next of kin of a deceased veteran will be given free cement to build a house on a plot of land up to around 370m², according to the Times of India newspaper. The cement can be obtained in person from any of Shree Cement's manufacturing facilities spread across India.

Bangladesh: LafargeHolcim subsidiary LafargeHolcim Bangladesh has donated US$117,000 to the Bangladesh Labour Welfare Foundation (BLWF) fund. The New Nation newspaper has reported that State Minister for Labour and Employment Monnujan Sufian received the cheque on behalf of the BLWF, which in 2020 supported 10,500 workers with US$5.2m-worth of financial support.

Kenya: LafargeHolcim subsidiary Bamburi Cement has made a donation of personal protective equipment (PPE) worth US$46,800 to coronavirus rapid response teams and 11 health facilities in Kajiado, Kilifi, Kwale, Machakos and Mombasa Counties. The company said that the donations include “N95 masks, surgical gloves, coveralls, goggles, face shields and shoe covers.” This will constitute part of the US$140,000 donations promised by the company to “support the fight against the spread of Covid-19.”

Group managing director Seddiq Hassani said, "During the cheque handover to the Covid-19 Emergency Response Fund Board earlier this year, we committed to continued support to Covid-19 management efforts and therefore, with the escalating numbers of Covid-19 cases, today we fulfil our promise with this donation to our frontline healthcare workers who continue to serve with fortitude by ensuring that they remain safe while serving Kenyans. We value their priceless role in battling Coronavirus.” He added, “We care for the community and we are determined to be part of the solution to this pandemic and make a difference for the benefit of us all.”

Spain: Cementos Portland Valderrivas has made a donation worth Euro3000 of nappies and baby food to the Alcala de Guadaira Social Services Centre. The Association of Children's Resources Ropero del Socorro de la Hermandad de Jesus, Cáritas and the Red Cross will be responsible for distribution.

The company said that it was “aware of the severity of the crisis that Covid-19 is generating, so decided to contact the Alcalá de Guadaíra City Council to make itself available to them and find out in which area the greatest needs were located.” It said, “As a result of this coordination, it was agreed to donate basic children's products, such as food and nappies.”

Nigeria: BUA Cement has donated six transformer units with a total capacity of 400kW to Okpella Community in Edo State. The Daily Independent newspaper has reported that the company’s aim is to improve local access to electricity.

Cameroon: Cimencam has donated 2000 Covid-19 test kits, 15 respirators and 10 reanimation beds to the Ministry of Public Health to help in its fight against the Covid-19 outbreak. The Journal du Cameroun newspaper has reported that chair Pierre Moukoko Mbonjo formally handed over the supplies, worth US$179,000, to Minister of Public Health André Mama Fouda at a ceremony in the Cameroonian capital of Yaounde.

Nigeria: Lafarge Africa has made a donation of US$1.29m to the battle against Covid-19 in Nigeria. Business Day news has reported that the money will go towards “various initiatives aimed at fighting the pandemic.” Lafarge Africa previously gave the use of three of its facilities and donated personal protective equipment (PPE) for the isolation and treatment of Coronavrius patients in April 2020.

Vietnam: Siam Cement Group (SCG) has donated four mobile pressure chambers for use by medical staff to collect samples without coming into contact with patients at the Da Nang Centre for Disease Control in Da Nang, South Central Coast Region. Viet Nam News has reported that the equipment has already been successfully used for mass sample collection in Thailand.

SCG subsidiary Vietnam Construction Materials general director Nopporn Keeratibunharn said, “Amid the rise of Covid-19 in the central area, SCG deeply understands and shares the responsibility to support and protect the local medical workforce via our innovation and expertise. When collecting samples, the medical workforce is prone to get in contact with the virus in micro-droplets from talking, sneezing, and coughing during the swab. Designed and built by SCG, these mobile positive-pressure chambers aim to avoid direct contact between the sample-collecting staff and the person providing the sample.”

India: Ambuja Cements’ profit in the first three months of 2020 was US$52.4m, down by 6.5% year-on-year from US$56.2m in the corresponding period of 2019. Sales were US$3.72bn, down by 3.4% from US$3,86bn. The company said the shutdown of all plants in March 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic ‘impacted operations.’ It added, “Taking into account directives from the government, operations at a few plants have commenced in a phased manner since 20 April 2020.’

Ambuja has said that together with ACC it has donated US$434,000 to non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to provide food and ration kits to vulnerable people affected by the coronavirus outbreak. LafargeHolcim CEO India and Ambuja Cements managing director and CEO Neeraj Akhouray said, “Collaborative models are more effective in both containment of the disease as well as support for those whose livelihood and even survival is at risk. We believe that our contributions to these NGOs that are delivering grass-roots relief measures, coupled with our own companies’ efforts on ground working with local communities, will greatly accelerate the scale and impact we will have.”

Pakistan: Bestway Cement has donated US$3.75m to charity causes between 31 December 2019 and 24 April 2020, including a US$1.25m donation to the state coronavirus relief fund on 23 April 2020. Bestway Group CEO Zameer Choudrey said, “We are conscious of our responsibility as Pakistan’s largest overseas investor. More resources will be devoted as and when necessary.” Bestway Group is based in the UK.
