Cemex inaugurates Carbon Neutral Alliance at Rüdersdorf cement plant

01 June 2022

Germany: Cemex has inaugurated the Carbon Neutral Alliance at its integrated Rüdersdorf cement plant. The initiative is intended to accelerate the development of the site into the world’s first carbon-neutral cement facility by 2030. Jörg Steinbach, Brandenburg’s Minister of the Economy, Fernando A Gonzalez, the chief executive officer of Cemex, the Mexican ambassador to Germany and representatives from Sasol attended the event.

The Carbon Neutral Alliance comprises a network of over 20 private and public organisations, dedicated to industrial decarbonisation. Among the technologies being introduced at Rüdersdorf include a waste heat recovery project scheduled for the summer of 2022, the development of renewable energy generation and a scheme to produce aviation fuel onsite in coordination with Sasol and Enertrag.

In 2020 Cemex announced its decarbonisation target of reducing its CO2 emissions by 40% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels. This target is expected to be achieved in Europe in 2022. By 2030, Cemex intends to reduce emissions at its European sites by 55%, in line with European Union's new strategy to reduce CO2 emissions. Cemex has also announced its goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions in concrete by 2050.

Cemex to produce aviation fuel at Rüdersdorf cement plant

13 April 2022

Germany: Mexico-based Cemex has joined a consortium with Sasol EcoFT and Enertrag that plans to use CO2 and hydrogen to produce aviation fuel. The project is part of Cemex’s Future in Action program and is part of its plan to develop a carbon neutral operation at its Rüdersdorf cement plant by 2030. The consortium will source green hydrogen generated from wind and solar energy from Enertrag. The CO2 will come from the Rüdersdorf cement plant, which will provide 100t/day CO2 in the project’s initial stages. Sasol will then contribute its technology to produce e-kerosene, which, once certified, can be blended to constitute up to 50% of jet fuel.

The Rüdersdorf carbon neutral alliance includes over 20 start-ups, universities, companies from other industries and authorities working to develop industrial-scale solutions achieve the first carbon-neutral cement plant in the world.

Enertrag is a renewable-energy company based in Brandenburg. It operates utility-scale integrated energy plants in 10 countries. Its plants produce electricity and green hydrogen from wind and solar sources.

Sasol EcoFT is part of Sasol Group. It uses its technology to produce sustainable fuels and chemicals from green hydrogen and sustainable carbon sources, via the Power-to-Liquids process.

Cemex Deutschland partners with Enertrag and Sunfire for CO2-to-fuel project at Rüdersdorf cement plant

16 July 2021

Germany: A consortium of Mexico-based Cemex subsidiary Cemex Deutschland, Uckerwerk Energietechnik subsidiary Enertrag and hydrogen specialist Sunfire has announced a cement industry decarbonisation project called Concrete Chemicals. The project will see sequestered CO2 combined with hydrogen to produce hydrocarbons for use as cement fuel. The consortium has submitted a funding application to the German Ministry for Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety for a trial at Cemex’s Rüdersdorf, Brandenburg, cement plant. This would help in the realisation of the plant’s 2030 carbon neutrality target. Alongside a 5000t/yr demonstration plant, the site will have a green hydrogen plant, supplied by Sunfire. When commissioned in 2025, the plant will produce synthetic fuels and other hydrocarbon fractions. The consortium is also investigating a methanol synthesis route using synthetic gas.

Europe, Middle East and Africa regional president Sergio Menendez said “We support the urgency of action to address the climate challenge and have committed to a 55% reduction in CO2 from our 1990 baseline in our European operations by 2030. Together with our industry partners, we can collectively transform ourselves into a CO2-neutral world. Concrete Chemicals is a promising project.”
