GICA aims to export up to 1.5Mt of cement in 2018
20 June 2018Algeria: Groupe des Ciments d’Algérie’s (GICA) aims to export 1 - 1.5Mt of cement in 2018. The Ministry of Industry and Mines said that the group has signed a deal to export 30,000t via its SODISMAC subsidiary, according to the Algeria Press Service. GICA is also in discussion with foreign partners to export other products such as limestone and gypsum. The cement company handles its exports via the ports of Arzew and Djendjen.
In 2017, the group recorded record cement production of nearly 14Mt compared with 12.6Mt in 2016. It exported 45,000t of cement in May 2018 under a contract with a total volume of 200,000t.
GICA makes first cement export to Europe
03 May 2018Algeria: Groupe des Ciments d’Algérie’s (GICA) has made its first export to Europe. The Ministry of Industry and Mines said that 45,000t of cement was exported to Europe via GICA’s building materials distribution subsidiary, according to the L’Expression newspaper. The consignment was the last part of a contract to export 0.2Mt of cement to Europe.
GICA reports nearly 14Mt of cement production in 2017
09 January 2018Algeria: Groupe des Ciments d’Algérie’s (GICA) cement production rose by 11% year-on-year to 14Mt in 2017 from 12.6Mt in 2016. The cement producer beat its own forecast of 13.2Mt for the year, according to the L’Expression newspaper. Production rose in 2017 due to the opening of its Aïn El Kebira, Sétif cement plant in the first quarter. Local production capacity is forecast to reach 40.6Mt/yr by 2020 with 20Mt/yr supplied by GICA, 11.1Mt/yr supplied by LafargeHolcim and the remainder from other companies.
Two more Algerian plants
27 November 2017Algeria: Already an exporter of cement, Algeria is set to gain two further cement plants by 2020. The CEO of GICA Group, Rabah Guessoum, has indicated that his group has already begun construction of a 1Mt/yr plant in Béchar and a 2Mt/yr plant at Sigus, Oum El Bouaghi.
By 2020 the group will reach a cement production capacity of around 20Mt/yr. Regarding exports, Guessoum noted that with the satisfaction of domestic demand, the surplus will be exported to other African countries, in accordance with the guidelines of the public authorities. He said, "Currently we are in discussion with international operators to form possible partnerships to place our products internationally."
