Malabar Cements to resume operations this month
07 October 2016India: Malabar Cements will restart operations later in October 2016, says EP Jayarajan, the Industry Minister of Kerala. The publicly owned cement producer stopped production due to lack of supply of raw materials in late September 2016, according to the Hindu newspaper. Laterite and limestone required for production will be sourced from Kasaragod and Rajasthan respectively.
India: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ban imports of cement from Pakistan in the interest of domestic industry and national security. He said that imports of cement without levy of customs duty were introduced in 2007 to augment supply in view of high demand, according to the Press Trust of India. However, he added that the situation has since changed, with the local industry now facing capacity utilisation of below 70%.
"I request you to ban import of cement into the country not only in the interest of growth and sustenance of domestic cement industry but also in keeping with the imperatives of national security. Ban of import from Pakistan will be in the interest of the country's security in the present juncture," Swamy said in a letter to Modi. He added that imports from Pakistan also carried the risk of smuggling of contraband materials like drugs and weapons.
Star Cement order mill upgrades from KHD
06 October 2016India: Star Cement has ordered upgrades for the 70t/hour ball mill, with a diameter of 3.6m and length of 11.9m, at its plant in Meghalaya from KHD. The equipment manufacturer will supply a roller press RP7-170/90 along with an SKS VC 3000 separator, which will increase the grinding capacity of the current ball mill by more than 100%. This will achieve a total guaranteed production capacity of 150t/hour for Pozzolanic Portland Cement at 3600 Blaine. The upgraded circuit is to be commissioned by 31 March 2017.
Wonder Cement appoint Sailesh Mohta as president of marketing
05 October 2016India: The board of directors of Wonder Cement, a part of the RK Group, has appointed Sailesh Mohta as President (Marketing). Mohta will report into JC Toshniwal, Managing Director, according to Asian News International. Mohta will oversee strategic business partnerships and develop tactical policies aimed at augmenting the national presence of the brand, identifying potential markets, implementing a conducive growth stratagem and generating a significant share of voice in the marketplace.
Since 2010, Mohta has served as the president of Binani Cement. He holds a bachelor's degree in commerce from the University Of Mumbai and a chartered accountancy degree from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India. He is also a member of Multi Commodity Exchange of India and National Spot Exchange.
More Maggi noodles to burn in cement kilns
04 October 2016India: The Supreme Court has approved Nestlé India and Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to destroy 550t of recalled stocks of Maggi noodles, which had passed their shelf life, in the kilns of cement plants. Queries on the disposal of the noodles had been raised by FSSAI. Previously, Nestlé India recalled stocks of Maggi noodles and destroyed around 38,000t of the product in 2015. Ambuja Cement was reportedly paid at the time to use the noodles as an alternative fuel.
Emami Cement wins limestone-mining lease in Rajasthan
29 September 2016India: Emami Cement has won a limestone-mining lease in Rajasthan for a cost of US$4.5/t. The lease is for the Nagapur 3B1b Deh block that has an estimated reserve of 168Mt. It is the first non-coal mining lease to be sold via auction in the state, according to the Financial Express. Emami Cement will also have to pay royalties and make contributions to the district mineral foundation and national mineral exploration trust once it starts operation. Mining is expected to start in about 18 months subject to land acquisition, project planning and environmental clearance.
Violence at hearing for quarry expansion by Ramco Cement
23 September 2016India: Commotion broke out at a public hearing seeking views on a proposed second quarry at a plant near Sendurai in Tamil Nadu for Ramco Cement. The police removed 13 attendees who threw chairs and caused disruption at the meeting, according to the Hindu newspaper. The hearing was organised by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board.
Dalmia launches Dalmia DSP Cement brand
21 September 2016India: Dalmia Cement Bharat has launched its Dalmia DSP Cement brand of cement. Senior Executive Director and group head B K Singh told the Press Trust of India that this new product will make concrete buildings more durable and it will be packaged to prevent water damage, allowing for longer storage times. The product will be released first in Tamil Nadu before a phased introduction in other states in the south of the country.
Mangalam Cement starts production at Aligarh grinding plant
20 September 2016India: Mangalam Cement has started commercial production at its 0.75Mt/yr grinding plant in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh following trials in August 2016. The cement producer has increased its overall cement production capacity to 4Mt/yr. Part of the BK Birla Group, the company produces 43 grade cement, 53 grade cement and Portland Pozzolana Cement (PPC) and markets it under the brand name of 'Birla Uttam.'
KHD to install 3-string preheater at Shree Cement
08 September 2016India: Shree Cement has awarded KHD with new projects for three more kiln lines, each with a capacity of 6000t/day.
The first project is for line two at Shree’s Raipur plant. The second new line will be built in Karnataka using a three-string preheater with the following equipment from KHD: three-string, six-stage preheater, PRZ 9575; three-pier rotary kiln Ø 5.4/5.0m x 75m long; and a Pyrojet burner; Pyrostep clinker cooler, PSC 3-154.16T. The project commencement date was 2 September 2016. The third project, at a location to be announced, will also be built using the equipment mentioned above.
Shree Cement has implemented 11 KHD high-efficiency kiln lines and many grinding stations, including 10 KHD roller presses.
