Sushila Devi Singhania appointed as chairperson of JK Cement
02 September 2020India: JK Cement has appointed Sushila Devi Singhania as the chairperson of its board. She has been a director of the cement producer since 2014. She also holds directorships with Yadu International and GH Securities, as well as leading roles with several educational organisations in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh.
India: JK Cement’s profit in the three months ended 30 June 2020, the first quarter of the 2021 financial year, was US$6.85m, down by 62% year-on-year from US$18.1m in the first quarter of the 2020 financial year. Revenues fell by 28% to US$138m from US$191m. The company said, “The operations and business performance of the group during the quarter ended 30 June 2020 was adversely impacted by the shutdown of the group's plants at various locations due to the lockdown announced by the government after the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic in March 2020.”
JK Cement rebrands JK White Cement as WhiteMaxX
01 September 2020India: JK Cement says that it will sell its white cement, formerly JK White Cement, under the new name ‘WhitemaxX.’ The Economic Times newspaper has reported that the new name “strengthens JK Cement’s core commitment to delivering the maximum to its consumers and partners with a focus on consistent and premium product quality,” according to the company.
JK Cement is the world’s third largest white cement producer and it exports WhiteMaxX to 43 countries.
JK Cement’s grey cement sales fall by 20% in first quarter
04 August 2020India: JK Cement’s grey cement sales fell by around 20% year-on-year in the first quarter of its financial year to 30 June 2020. They have recovered gradually since coronavirus-related lockdowns eased. White cement sales have recovered slower and dropped by 50% in the first quarter. The cement producer temporarily suspended operations at its plants in five states in late March 2020. Operations resumed in late April 2020 in a phased manner. The company added that its capital and financial resources remained “entirely protected in spite of adverse impact on its sales.”
India: JK Super Cement has signalled its support for the work of builders with the hash tag “#YehPuccaHai,” meaning, “This is strength.” The hash tag has now gone viral, garnering 25.5m social media shares, while the accompanying video has had 1.5m internet views.
India: JK Cement’s sales rose by 10% year-on-year to US$763m in the financial year to 31 March 2020 from US$691m in the same period in 2019. Its sales volumes of cement decreased slightly to 9.8Mt and its profit after tax nearly doubled to US$63.5m. However, its sales fell slightly in the fourth quarter, sales volumes of cement dropped by 7% year-on-year to 2.9Mt and it reported a significantly reduced standalone net profit.
The cement producer said that its operations had gradually stabilising since coronavirus lockdown measures were relaxed. All of its integrated and cement grinding plants had resumed production and despatch. It noted that due to lower power demands less fly ash was available so it is sourcing this from other locations. Labour shortages are also affecting bag supplies and the availability of drivers. As part of cash conservation measures it has restricted capital expenditure to US$66m in the current financial year.
Government lifts lockdown for rural cement production
20 April 2020India: Operations of industrial units in rural areas are clear to resume as of 20 April 2020, subject to local permissions and social distancing rules. Dion News Service has reported that JK Lakshmi Cement has resumed operations at two grinding units in Gujarat, JK Cement has resumed reduced operations at its 3.0Mt/yr integrated Muddapur plant in Karnataka and UltraTech has resumed operations ‘at some of the company’s locations.’ Ambuja Cements, ACC, ICC and India Cements all announced plans to return to full capacity utilisation in phases.
As part of phase two of India’s coronavirus lockdown, public spaces remain closed and public transport is suspended until 3 May 2020.
JK Cement records 130% year-on-year nine-month profit growth
10 February 2020India: JK Cement has announced a rise in total comprehensive profit (net of tax) over the nine months ended 31 December 2019 of 130% to US$56.2m from US$24.5m in the corresponding period of 2018. Revenues rose by 14% year-on-year to US$567m in the period from US$495m over the nine months to 31 December 2018.
On 3 February 2020 JK Cement commissioned a 1.5Mt/yr and a 1.0Mt/yr grinding unit at its Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, and Mangrol, Rajasthan, plants.
Double commissioning for JK Cement
04 February 2020India: JK Cement has successfully commissioned a 1.0Mt/yr grey cement grinding mill at its integrated Mangrol cement plant in Chittorgarh, Rajasthan and 1.5Mt/yr of new cement grinding capacity at its Aligarh integrated plant in Uttar Pradesh. Both of the units have also commenced commercial dispatches.
India’s installed capacity set to exceed 500Mt/yr in 2020
15 January 2020India: Integrated cement and grinding plants expansions by companies including Dalmia Bharat, JK Cement and Aditya Birla subsidiary UltraTech of an additional 23Mt/yr are set to bring India’s total installed cement capacity to 508Mt/yr by the end of 2020. Business Standard newspaper has reported that steady prices year-on-year and ‘softening input costs’ have facilitated the expansions in spite of a ‘flattish trend in industry-wide volume growth.’
