Tamil Nadu government launches Valimai cement

03 September 2021

India: The state government of Tamil Nadu has announced the launch of a new cement, called Valimai, by one of its subsidiary cement producers. The United News of India agency has reported that the government anticipates a drop in cement prices as a result of the launch. It is currently targeting a total cement capacity of 19Mt/yr with the establishment of a planned 10Mt/yr plant.

On mid-June 2021, the state government asked cement producers operating locally to lower their prices.

Lafarge Canada supplies EcoPact Zero concrete in Canada

Canada: Lafarge Canada has supplied the first EcoPact Zero near-zero net CO2 ready-mix concrete in Canada. The subsidiary of Switzerland-based Holcim supplied the concrete to a Habitat for Humanity housing development site in Kingston, Ontario.

Metso Outotec launches new Nordberg crusher head

24 August 2021

Finland: Metso Outotec has launched the Xtreme forged crusher head. The supplier says that this completes the portfolio for Nordberg MP800, MP1000, MP1250, HP800, and HP900 crushers. It is made of one-piece forged material, with geometrical features to assure consistent bearing loading within machine design parameters.

Crushing products senior vice president Chad Smallwood said “Metso Outotec now has a complete range of crusher heads in the portfolio and our customers can choose the level of durability based on their application and needs. The new Xtreme forged head is the most reliable crusher head in the industry. The original equipment manufacturer (OEM) design ensures optimal crushing even where equipment may be pushed beyond design limits.”

Cemix launches white cement plant in Russia

Russia: Cemix, a subsidiary of the Austrian firm Lasselsberger, has launched its new 0.24Mt white cement plant at Bashkiria, near Magnitogorsk in Chelyabinsk Oblast. President Vladimir Putin attended the ceremony. The building materials producer plans to distribute its products nationally from terminals at Lukhovitsy in Moscow Oblast and Afipsky in Krasnodar Krai. The company is a subsidiary of Austria-based Lasselsberger.

Sika expands capacity at Doha concrete admixture plant

Qatar: Switzerland-based Sika has expanded concrete admixture production capacity at it Doha admixture plant. The company has also announced the start of epoxy resin production in the country. It says that its present investments target growth to serve the expanding regional construction market. Numerous major projects and the expansion of energy and utilities infrastructure have driven a growing demand. Qatar’s state sourcing policy further increases consumption of building materials produced in the country.

Europe, Middle East and Africa regional manager Ivo Schädler said "Our latest investment in Qatar positions us for continued growth and strengthens our competitiveness in the country. In expanding our production, we are anticipating a substantial increase in demand and volumes for our high-value adhesives and flooring solutions. Our building sector customers will benefit from an expanded and locally produced portfolio of Sika solutions which, in addition, eliminates long-distance transportation."

Cemex to launch Vertua concrete product worldwide

30 October 2020

Mexico: Cemex plans to launch its net-zero CO2 Vertua concrete product worldwide following its release in Europe. It said that customers in several European countries are using Vertua in infrastructure projects and climate-friendly building projects.
“We believe that climate change is one of the biggest challenges of our time, and we are committed to doing our part to address it. Vertua is clear evidence that we can transition to a carbon-neutral economy, where concrete is an essential component in the development of climate-friendly urban projects, sustainable buildings, and resilient infrastructure,” said Fernando A Gonzalez, chief executive officer (CEO) of Cemex.

Vertua uses a geopolymer binder solution created by Cemex’s Research and Development Center in Switzerland. This solution has a reduced carbon footprint of up to 70%, The compensation of the remaining CO2 is achieved by participating in reforestation projects, among other initiatives.

Holcim El Salvador launches new-formula Cuscatlán cement

El Salvador: LafargeHolcim subsidiary Holcim El Salvador has announced an alteration to the composition of its flagship product, Cuscatlán cement, developed in laboratories in France and Mexico. Strategic marketing manager Amalia Palacios said, “The new formula offers the end user higher quality and less waste, that is to say a yield of around 20% more for the same price, so that we are improving quality without an impact on the customer's pocket."

LafargeHolcim launches ECOPact low-carbon concrete in US

23 July 2020

US: Switzerland-based LafargeHolcim has announced the start of sales via its local subsidiaries of its ECOPact range of 30 - 100% reduced CO2 concretes. Chief executive officer (CEO) Jan Jenisch said, “I am proud to introduce ECOPact, the industry’s broadest range of green concrete for high-performing, sustainable and circular construction.”

The company says that, where regulatory conditions allow, ECOPact products integrate upcycled construction and demolition materials, further closing the resource loop. ECOPact concretes will enter the Canadian, Latin American and UK markets in mid-late 2020. “With the roll-out of this Green Concrete, we are accelerating the transition to more sustainable building materials for greener construction,” added Jenisch.

Cemex launches Vertua carbon neutral concretes

23 July 2020

Mexico: Cement has announced the launch of a range of carbon neutral concretes called Vertua. By offsetting, Cemex has eliminated Vertua’s remaining carbon footprint following a 70% reduction in embodied emissions compared to Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) through use of a geopolymer cement mixture. The concretes will become available on different markets globally in 2020 and 2021.

National Gypsum launches Permabase cement board

05 February 2020

US: National Gypsum has launched Permabase WP Waterproof Cement Board, a 1.3cm-thick cement board with a waterproof core, reinforced edge and smoother surface and stronger tile bond than previous Permabase boards for mould and moisture resistance and ease of cutting and installation. National Gypsum product manager for Permabase Tony Fuller said that “National Gypsum is committed to creating innovative products with performance benefits” for construction.
