Germany: Menzel Elektromotoren held a topping out ceremony for the erection of the last structural beam in its upcoming Hennigsdorf motors plant in Berlin on 16 December 2022. The motors manufacturer expects to complete construction in mid-2023 and commission the facility late that year. Full-capacity operations will commence from January 2024. Menzel Elektromotoren will relocate existing equipment from its Central Berlin plant to the new 6500m2 site. The Hennigsdorf plant will offer an increased hoist capacity of 80t, enabling it to handle larger pieces of equipment.
In the cement industry, Menzel Elektromotoren motors run blowers, conveyor systems, crushers, fans and mills.
Pakistan: Germany-based Menzel Elektromotoren has revealed work on a replacement motor it has built for an unnamed cement plant in Pakistan. As part of the project it has designed a motor to fit a limited installation space that could drive the unit’s raw mill, another cement mill or a fan.
The engineering company’s solution was a compact slip ring motor in frame size 710 with the cooling system tailored to fit around a steel girder in the cement plant. To accommodate the existing couplings in two different sizes, Menzel designed the replacement motor with two shaft ends with different diameters. The motor output is configured to ensure efficient continuous operation in each of the three applications. The machine has a rated output of 4600kW and a rated voltage of 6300V. It complies with protection class IP55. At the customer's request, it was designed in cooling type IC 666, with permanent external ventilation of the inner and outer cooling circuit. Before delivery, Menzel also ran a load test in its in-house test field with the end-user attending via video streaming.
Menzel starts building new motor plant near Berlin
15 June 2022Germany: Menzel Elektromotoren has launched construction work for its new plant in Hennigsdorfon, on the outskirts of Berlin, with the laying of the foundation stone. More than 200 guests and employees attended the event. The new headquarters will be erected on a 24,000m2 plot. All administrative and production workplaces are to be relocated by January 2024.
When complete, the new motor plant with an effective floor space of 8500m2 will increase the manufacturer's production capacities, allow the expansion of the workforce and add efficiency gains through an optimised floor plan. The production area of about 3800m2 will accommodate the assembly, metal processing, fabrication and winding workshops, paint shops and three test fields. In addition, there will be offices, logistics zones and storage areas. The new property is intended to allow for future expansions.
Menzel to build new motor plant near Berlin
02 March 2022Germany: Menzel Elektromotoren has signed a construction contract to build a larger motor plant at Hennigsdorf near Berlin. The manufacturer says it has experienced substantial growth in recent years and has outgrown its present headquarters in central Berlin. The new site will have an area of around 8500m² and will accommodate a motor plant with production, testing and storage areas as well as offices. The plot will also allow for flexible expansions to meet future growth requirements. Construction is to start in the summer of 2022, with completion scheduled for August 2023.
“Our new location will feature state-of-the-art machinery, efficient logistics, larger hoist capacities for optimised production processes and high energy efficiency,” said chief executive officer Mathis Menzel. “We will also expand our team and create around 100 new jobs in production and administration in the medium term.”

India: Switzerland-based ABB has reported its successful installation of electrification and automation systems at RCC’s upcoming 3.9Mt/yr integrated Mukutban plant in Yavatmal, Maharashtra. The plant will have a 40MW captive power plant and an 11MW heat recovery system. ABB has supplied MV and LV Switchgears with UMC100.3 intelligent motors, an ABB Ability System 800xA and an ABB Ability Expert Optimiser.
Simotix Connect 400 forms basis of Currax and Siemens joint Industry 4.0 pilot project
24 March 2020Germany: Currax and Siemens have announced their collaboration on a mill operations digitisation pilot project involving the Simotics Connect 400 motor data collector and transmitter. They hope that analysis of data processed via the Simotics 400 will better enable the remote operating of mills ‘to increase efficiency and component life’ and speeding the shift towards automation and production that is resilient to crises such as the coronavirus outbreak.
Langley Holdings 2019 profit falls by 42% year-on-year
11 February 2020UK: Langley Holdings recorded a 42% year-on-year fall in profit in 2019 to Euro59.9m from Euro103m in 2018. There was a 3.3% decline in sales year-on-year to Euro820m from Euro848m. The company attributed its profit drop to its Marelli Motori acquisition and reorganisation of the Italy-based motor and generator producer. Langley Holdings Chairman Tony Langley said, “The group is now poised for the next phase of its development.”
Siemens launches Simogear Reluctance Geared Motor
28 March 2019Germany: Siemens is extending its Simogear portfolio with a new synchronous-reluctance drive system consisting of Simogear standard gear unit, Simotics reluctance motor and a Sinamics frequency converter for controlling speed. The product has an output range of 0.55 – 4kW and is available for Sinamics G110M, G120D, G120 and S120 converters.
The engineering company says that its efficiency class is comparable to IE4 and it is offers advantages in comparison to asynchronous motors when operating under partial load due to its greater efficiency and lower losses. In addition, the drive system is characterised by high dynamics due to the low moment of inertia and optimised control. An external fan is not required due to the constant torque/speed curve up to the nominal speed and the drive system is certificated to CE, UL/CSA and CCC is in preparation. It also says that commissioning is easy as the motor code can be entered into the convertor.
Siemens sells a portfolio of frequency converters, motors, couplings and gearboxes for many industries and applications, including the cement and mineral sectors.
Menzel supplies motor for Canadian cement plant
23 January 2019Canada: Germany’s Menzel Elektromotoren has supplied a spare motor for a cement plant in Canada. A new slipping motor was required to replace three existing crusher motors in case of a failure. Due to tight space restrictions Menzel's project manager took the measurements in Canada personally. A 4.5MW motor was selected from stock, an extended shaft was built and adapter plates were fitted with mounting holes for all three locations as well as brackets for plug and play mounting of vibration sensors for condition monitoring. In addition, the terminal box was fitted with long feeder cables to facilitate the third-party connecting-up.

Itacamba’s Yacuses cement plant installs WEG motors
29 June 2017Bolivia: Itacamba’s Yacuses cement plant in Germán Busch province has installed several electric motors from Brazil’s WEG. The scope of supply included W22 IP66 low voltage motors and medium voltage slip ring motors with a brush lifting system for continuous operation. Although WEG did not specify the exact application of the motors these products are usually used in drive mills, crushers and fans at cement plants.
Itacamba is a joint venture between Brazil’s Votorantim and Spain’s Molins. WEG has previously supplied its motors with the brush lifting system to several cement plants operated by Votorantim.
