Malbaza Cement Company produces first cement in late 2018
04 January 2019Niger: Industry Minister Malam Zaneidou Amirou says that the Malbaza Cement Company produced the first tonne of cement at its Malbaza plant in late December 2018. The plant has a production capacity of 0.65Mt/yr, according to the Pan African News Agency. It is expected to cover around 80% of domestic demand for cement and reduce imports. The site was a workforce of 347 employees, including 276 Nigeriens.
Niger: Nouvelle Cimenterie de Niger (NCN) is preparing to open a new plant at Malbaza in December 2018. Company officials told Prime Minister Brigi Rafini that construction the unit had been completed and that it was preparing to start production, according to Niamey et les 2 jours and the l’Agence Ecofin. The plant has a production capacity of 2000t/day and it is estimated that it will provide 80% of the country’s demand for cement. The unit has 347 employees. The project was originally started in mid-2011 but was construction halted.
Dangote Cement starts building 2.5Mt/yr plant in Niger
16 October 2018Niger: Nigeria’s Dangote Cement has started building a 2.5Mt/yr cement plant at Keita, near Tahoua. The project has a cost of US$275m, according to the Agence France Presse and local media. Construction is expected to last until the end of 2020. The unit will also include a 100MW captive coal-fired power plant.
The new plant is expected to reduce the price of cement locally, as the country mostly imports cement from Nigeria and Benin. Nouvelle Cimenterie de Niger (NCN) has been intermittently building an integrated plant at Malbaza since 2011.
Nigeria: Joe Makoju, the Group Chief Executive Officer of Dangote Cement, has revealed that the cement producer exports 0.21Mt of cement to Ghana, Togo and Niger in the first quarter of 2018. The company’s revenue grew by 16% year-on-year to US$668m from US$575m, according to the Vanguard newspaper. Its profit increased by 29% to US$199m from US$154m. Cement sales rose by 2.8% to 6.2Mt from 6.03Mt.
Algeria/Niger: The Aoulef cement plant in Afrar province has started exporting cement to Niger. Youcef Yousfi, the Minister of Industry and Mines, welcomed the news in a statement, according to the El Moudjahid newspaper and the Algeria Press Service. The plant exported 950t of Ordinary Portland Cement by land. The 1.5Mt/yr Aoulef cement plant started production in December 2017. It aims to export around 1Mt/yr of cement.
Nouvelle Cimenterie de Niger to open plant at Malbaza
26 March 2018Niger: Nouvelle Cimenterie de Niger (NCN) plans to start operation at its new US$90m integrated cement plant at Malbaza. Minister of Industry M Mallam Zaneidou Amirou visited the site to assess its progress, according to the Niger Inter Media Group. Work on the unit started in mid-2011 but was subsequently abandoned.
Nigeria: Dangote Cement intends to reach a total cement production capacity of 50Mt/yr by 2016 which will make it Africa's largest cement producer. The company's chief executive, DVG Edwin, summarised production projects by the Nigeria-based cement producer: "Our plant in Senegal will soon be producing cement and our South African venture, Sephaku Cement, is well on track to open in early 2014. These two plants will be our first production ventures outside Nigeria as we aim to become Africa's leading supplier of cement," said Edwin.
Edwin revealed that construction work is underway at Mugher, Ethiopia for a 2.5Mt/yr cement plant. Operation is scheduled to begin in October 2015 at a 3Mt/yr gas-fired plant in Mtwara, Tanzania. Cement production is expected to start in mid-2014 at a 1.5Mt/yr in Ndola, Zambia. In Cameroon a 1.5Mt/yr grinding plant will be completed in the first half of 2014 and an integrated 1.5Mt/yr cement plant is expected to begin production in the second quarter of 2016. A 1.5Mt/yr cement plant in South Sudan and a 1.5Mt/yr integrated cement plant in Kenya are both set to become operational in 2016.
Along the coast of West Africa Dangote nears completion of import facilities to receive and bag bulk cement produced in Nigeria and Senegal. Additional import facilities in Sierra Leone are due to begin by the end of 2013 or early 2014.
In Liberia Edwin said that the order for equipment has been made for an import facility in Freeport Monrovia. Imports into Liberia are expected to commence in early 2015. The company plans to build a 1.5Mt/yr grinding plant in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, with operations projected to begin in early 2015. In Ghana, the company plans to open 1.5Mt/yr grinding plants in Tema and Takoradi by early 2015. Finally, Dangote cement has recently announced its intention to build an integrated 1.5Mt/yr plant in Niger.
Dangote to build 1.5Mt/yr cement plant in Niger
23 October 2013Niger: Aliko Dangote, head of Dangote Cement, intends to build a US$350m cement plant with a production capacity of 1.5Mt/yr in Niger. Dangote made the comments to Reuters following a meeting with President Issoufou Mahamadou in Niamey on 16 October 2013. The project will create 6000 to 7000 jobs. The plant will include a captive power plant with surplus electricity to be sold to the local power grid.
Niger currently has one cement plant, Société Nigérienne de Cimenterie, with a production capacity of 0.04Mt/yr.
