India: Around 15t of illegal narcotic drugs, valued at US$902,000, were incinerated at Ultratech’s cement manufacturing plant in Khor, Neemuch district, Madhya Pradesh, as part of a major operation by the Ministry of Home Affairs. Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Nimish Agrawal said the drugs had been seized in about 200 cases registered across seven districts of the Ujjain range. He added that the contraband was destroyed in line with prescribed procedures.
Police arrest suspects accused of cement siphoning in Athi River
27 November 2024Kenya: A police operation in Athi River led to the arrest of five suspects and the impoundment of three trucks involved in a cement siphoning racket. Officers from the Kenya Police Service recovered over 660 bags of cement that allegedly weighed 4kg less than advertised, at 46kg each, according to The Star Kenya. The operation was initiated after a customer had complained about receiving underweight cement bags. One of the suspects said that he was paid US$3.86/day to siphon 2 - 6kg of cement from each 50kg bag, and that each truck carrying 220 bags of cement was siphoned by three people at a time, usually during the night.
Death reported at cement plant in Madhya Pradesh
29 August 2024India: The family of worker Rajaram Kushwaha has reported that he died after being taken to hospital for injuries sustained while working at a cement plant near Maihar, Maharashtra. The Free Press Journal newspaper has reported that Kushwaha’s family has requested that police lodge a freedom of information request of plant management into the circumstances of the ‘mysterious’ tragedy.
The Gambia: The Gambia police force has withheld permission for the Cement Importers and Traders Association to march, citing security concerns due to the upcoming Tobaski festival. This incident marks the second denial of a permit for a peaceful protest by the association.
The Trade Ministry and Jah Oil are accused of perpetuating misinformation to justify a ‘significant’ increase in cement import duties, which has affected small-scale importers and led to increased cement prices across the country, according to The Point Newspaper. This policy has reportedly benefited large-scale importers while excluding smaller ones from importing from certain foreign markets. The association criticises the government's selective enforcement of import bans and duties, which they argue supports a monopolistic agenda favouring Jah Oil, despite widespread economic and consumer impacts.
Two die in shooting at Iskandarabad cement plant
19 October 2023Pakistan: The deputy general manager and a plant engineer of a cement plant in Iskandarabad died after being shot by a colleague on 18 October 2023. The shooter was a chemical engineer at the plant, who shot the men after ‘flaring up’ in a meeting. Emergency services took a third victim, an engineer, to hospital for treatment. The Dawn newspaper has reported that police are investigating the tragedy, including the matter of how the shooter managed to enter the plant armed.
Death at My Home Industries’ Huzurnagar cement plant
26 July 2023India: Police are investigating an incident in which a construction worker died and two others were injured at My Home Industries’ Huzurnagar cement plant in the Suryapet District of Telangana. Workers were laying concrete for a new medium-rise building on the site on 25 July 2023, when a pipe conveying concrete became congested. Three workers succeeded in clearing the blockage, however this caused a powerful burst of concrete, knocking them into a lift, which fell to the ground floor. The Indian Express newspaper has reported that 32 year-old Arvind Singh died, while his colleague Raja Singh is receiving treatment for a head injury in Hyderabad. The third worker, Hassan Jamal, has since been discharged from hospital.
Police have reportedly filed charges of negligence against the contractor responsible for the site.
Shree Cement denies US$2.8bn tax fraud
26 June 2023India: Shree Cement has rejected findings by the government's Income Tax Department of tax fraud worth US$2.8bn. NDTV News has reported that the producer's alleged financial mismanagement resulted in losses of up to US$170m/yr for national and state governments. The mismanagement reportedly included the use of forged documents. Authorities conducted a second set of searches at company sites in Rajasthan during the week ending on 25 June 2023, following preliminary searches on 21 June 2023.
Shree Cement said "The company's management team is available and extending full cooperation to the officials. The information as required by the officials is being made available."
Shree Cement facilities raided by tax authorities
22 June 2023India: The government's income tax department has carried out raids at five locations belonging to Shree Cement. Reuters has reported that the authorities said they conducted 'survey action' on 21 June 2023.
Taiwan: A 57-year-old worker died after falling into slag cement in the production line of CHC Resources Corporation's Kaohsiung slag cement plant at 16:00 on 22 June 2023. CNA English News has reported that the victim was submerged for a prolonged period. A second man, aged 51, also entered the cement, but escaped with 'minor injuries.' The workers had been carrying out cleaning work on the line. Local authorities reportedly said that CHC Resources Corporation had 'No proper safety protocols' in place for the activity.
Police raid fake cement factory in Uttarakhand
07 June 2023India: Uttarakhand police successfully raided a fake cement blending and bagging plant in the state’s Udham Singh Nagar District. The Hindustan Times newspaper has reported that police recovered 1250 bags of fake cement bearing ACC and UltraTech Cement branding, as well as further empty bags. They arrested one suspect at the scene.
