UK: Holcim subsidiary Aggregate Industries has launched an accelerated careers programme for Ukrainian refugees called Jobs for Ukraine. The programme offers a fast and supportive recruitment process with a view to finding Ukrainian refugees suitable employment in the UK. Candidates may access online registration here.

India: Dalmia Bharat subsidiary Dalmia Cement (Bharat) has shifted its recruitment procedures towards hiring more local people in Maharashtra, Bengal, Orissa due to labour shortages throughout the Covid-19 outbreak. The Economic Times newspaper has reported that local labour now makes up a majority of the workforce at multiple cement plants belonging to the company.

Dalmia Bharat group head of human resources Ajit Menon said, "In our Bengal plant, we have 90 - 95% local workers now versus 20 - 25% earlier, while in Orissa it is almost 100% local labour. Covid-19 has accelerated the intake of local workforce.” He added, “This has also given us the opportunity to give employment to people in the locations neighbouring our factories - many of whom are tribal people and are from underprivileged communities."

Denmark: FLSmidth has reported ‘increasing disruptions to customers’ and its own operations’ and higher costs due to ‘more complex logistics and a weaker fixed cost absorption’ following the coronavirus outbreak. It says that around half of employees are working remotely.

FLSmidth continues its business improvement initiatives launched in 2019 and has implemented a capital expenditure (CAPEX) reduction, salary adjustment postponement and hiring freezes.

Ghana: Dangote Cement plans to recruit 5000 workers following its procurement of 1000 trucks to distribute its products. The cement producer has started recruiting drivers, truck driver assistants and loaders. The vehicles arrived in Ghana in early July 2016, according to the Lagos Guardian. The drive to build its distribution network complements the company’s on-going efforts to build a 1.5Mt/yr clinker grinding plant in Takoradi.
