Siam Cement's 2019 profit falls by 13% year-on-year

Thailand: Siam Cement (SCG) has recorded a profit of US$2.64bn in 2019, down by 13% year-on-year from US$3.05bn in 2018. Revenue fell by 8.5% to US$14.1bn from US$15.4bn.

Global Cement and Concrete Association launches research network

UK: The Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA) has launched ‘Innovandi,’ a research network between industry and scientific institutions. The network intends to research the areas of process technology, including the impact of co-processing, efficiency of clinker production and implementation of CCUS/ technologies, and products. This will include the impact of clinker substitutes and alternative binders in concrete, low carbon concrete technology and improve the understanding of CO2 reduction through re-carbonation.

“Our industry is fully committed to taking action to reduce CO2 emissions. As such, Innovandi is an industry led initiative and will bring together the best minds from all corners of the cement and concrete world, academia and business. Together we will truly collaborate on a global scale and use our expertise to find new ways of working and developing effective innovations,” said Benjamin Sporton, the chief executive officer (CEO) of the GCCA.

24 companies from the cement and concrete industry, including cement and concrete manufacturers, admixture specialists and equipment suppliers, have committed to the initiative, with scientific institutions and additional companies set to join as its work begins work. These include Buzzi Unicem, Cementir Holding, Cementos Argos, Cementos Molins, Cementos Pacasmayo, Cemento Progresso, Cemex, CNBM, Chryso, CRH, Dalmia Cement, FLSmidth, Grupo Cementos de Chihuahua (GCC), GCP Applied Technologies, Mapei, HeidelbergCement, LafargeHolcim, Nesher Israel Enterprises, SCG Cement, Titan Cement, Refratechnik Cement, Sika Technology, Subote New Materials and Votorantim.

As part of the new initiative, the GCCA also intends to establish an annual Innovandi global conference to promote collaboration on innovation and research in the sector.

SCG Cement and Ho Chi Minh City University sign innovation agreement

Vietnam: SCG Cement – Building Materials Vietnam and Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology have signed a memorandum of understanding for a three-year collaboration on innovation including research, development and human development. The agreement follows work between the two organisations over the last year, according to The Vietnam Investment Review newspaper. They will now form a collaborative expert group to carry out research projects in line with the needs of SCG, to improve product quality, increase labour productivity and accelerate the application of new technologies in production and construction.

Non-government sector drives SCG’s sales so far in 2019

Thailand: SCG’s sales from its cement business rose by 3% year-on-year to US$3.04bn in the first half of 2019 from US$2.94bn in the same period in 2018. Its earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) grew by 7% to US$410m from US$382m. Cement sales in the second quarter of 2019 were driven by the non-government sector. Overall the group’s sales and earnings fell due to poor performance from its chemicals division, which it blamed on the on-going US-China trade war.

SCG Vietnam launches SCG Super Cement brand

Vietnam: SCG Vietnam has launched its SCG Super Cement product. The product is intended as a ‘premium’ multi-purpose cement for home owners, developers, contractors and architects, according to the Vietnam Economic Times newspaper. It can be used in a variety of applications including brick-laying, plastering and concrete work for structure and foundations.

SCG first quarter earnings grow on price increase

Thailand: Siam Cement Group’s (SCG) cement division’s sales grew by 4% year-on-year to US$1.51bn in the first quarter of 2019. Its earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) rose by 10% to US$222m. It attributed the growth in earnings on increased cement prices and cost savings. Overall, the group’s sales and earnings fell due to poor performance from its chemicals division.

SCG Cement strikes solar energy deal with Constant Energy

02 April 2019

France/Thailand: SCG Cement has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with France’s Constant Energy to build 50MW of solar photovoltaic (PV) units at its plants and associated companies. The target is to deploy and commission the solar PV plants over the next three years, through rooftop-based, ground-mounted and floating solar PV plants. Engineering of a first solar PV plants has started and the pre-construction permitting and licensing process will be handled in the second quarter of 2019, followed by construction.

SCG unfazed by cement import tariff in the Philippines

Philippines: SCG Philippines Country Director Anuvat Chalermchai says he is unconcerned about the country’s new tariff on imported cement because the company’s imports are ‘very small.’ The subsidiary of the Thai conglomerate imports 0.2 – 0.3Mt/yr of cement, according to Business World. It operates seven companies in the Philippines: United Pulp and Paper Company, SCG Trading Philippines, Green Siam Resources, Green Alternative Technology Specialist, SCG Marketing Philippines and Mariwasa Siam Ceramics.

Siam Cement sales grow by 15% to US$396m in Cambodia

Cambodia: Siam Cement Group’s (SCG) sales in Cambodia grew by 15% year-on-year to US$396m in 2018 due to higher sales of cement. The Thai company operates six subsidiaries in the country, including Kampot Cement, according to the Phnom Penh Post newspaper. Chiv Sivpheng, general manager of the Cambodia Constructors Association, said that demand for construction materials had been increasing annually as the population increases and urbanisation intensifies.

SCG’s cement business grows sales in 2018

30 January 2019

Thailand: SCG’s revenue from its cement business rose by 4% year-on-year to US$5.82bn in 2018 from US$5.60bn in 2017. Its earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) fell slightly, by 1%, to US$676m from US$711m. The group attributed its cement sales growth to operational expansion in all markets. It reported that local demand for cement increased by 3% in 2018 due to growth in the government sector. Overall, the group’s revenue rose by 6% to US$15.2bn but its EBITDA fell by 15% to US$2.76bn.
