NI Capital to sell Misr Cement Qena stake
11 December 2023Egypt: NI Capital, the investment arm of Egypt’s National Investment Bank, plans to sell its 10% stake in Misr Cement Qena. The Al Borsa newspaper has reported that the company is preparing to tender for a financial advisor for the intended sale. The divestment would form part of a US$5bn International Monetary Fund (IMF)-mandated privatisation programme, due to conclude before June 2024.
ABG Shipyard seeks buyer for Vadraj Cement
17 November 2023India: ABG Shipyard plans to sell Vadraj Cement, which owns a decommissioned clinker unit and grinding unit, as well as quarries and a jetty, in Kutch, Gujarat. The National Company Law Tribunal took over winding up proceedings for the former cement producer in September 2023. The Economic Times newspaper has reported JSW Cement, Adani Group and steel producer ArcelorMittal Group as potential buyers for the business. It expects Vadraj Cement to attract a price of US$240 – 300m, against debts of US$841m.
Qatar: The board of directors of Qatar National Cement has approved the proposed sale of the company’s Cement Plant No. 1 in Umm Bab, Al-Shahaniya Municipality. Reuters has reported the plant’s buyer as Arab International Metal Trading.
B5 Plus acquires Heidelberg Materials’ Gambian business
22 August 2023Gambia: Heidelberg Materials has sold its business in the Gambia to iron and steel products company B5 Plus. The business consists of the Banjul cement terminal. Heidelberg Materials says that it will continue to supply West African customers through its operations in Benin, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Liberia and Togo. The company sold its subsidiary in Sierra Leone in 2021.
Cemex updates sustainability-linked financing framework
18 August 2023Mexico: Cemex has updated its sustainability-linked financing framework in line with its latest emissions reduction targets of 475kg/t of CO2 per tonne of cementitious material. Under the new framework, Cemex will issue up to US$350m-worth of sustainability-linked bonds on the Mexican Stock Exchange. The group plans to use the funds to refinance debt, as well as for ‘general corporate purposes.’ It aims to acheive 85% sustainability-linked financing by 2030.
Cemex said "The proceeds will be used exclusively for eligible green projects in pollution prevention and control, renewable energy, energy efficiency, clean transportation, sustainable water and wastewater management, production technologies and processes adapted to the circular economy and/or eco-efficient products.”
Tokyo Cement (Lanka) to sell 10% of shares
01 August 2023Sri Lanka: Tokyo Cement (Lanka) has informed the Colombo Stock Exchange of an upcoming extraordinary general meeting of its shareholders. The meeting will decide whether to approve the sale of 10% of the company's shares.
India: Shree Cement has pulled out of the race to acquire a 40 – 70% stake in Sanghi Cement for US$205 – 369m. The Financial Express newspaper has reported that Shree Cement said that it will shift its short-term focus to ‘internal expansion.’
Sanghi Cement operates 6.1Mt/yr of cement capacity and a 143MW captive power plant in Western India. It has debts of US$219m.
Uruguayan government invites bids for ANCAP
22 June 2023Uruguay: The government has tendered for offers to acquire state-owned Administración Nacional de Combustibles, Alcohol y Portland (ANCAP). The Caras y Caretas newspaper has reported that the board of directors approved the tender on 18 May 2023. The tendering process will run until 11 July 2023, and any resulting privatisation will require ratification by parliament.
ANCAP operates two 300,000t/yr integrated cement plants.

Adani Group seeks sale of 4 - 5% Ambuja Cements stake
13 March 2023India: Adani Group has entered talks with lenders for the sale of a 4 - 5% stake in Ambuja Cements. Adani holds a 63% stake in the producer, which it acquired from Switzerland-based Holcim in 2022. The Financial Times newspaper has reported that the move is intended to reduce debt and restore investor confidence in Adani Group.
The Hindu Business Line newspaper has named US-based asset management company GQG Partners as a probable buyer for the stake.
US-based short seller Hindenburg Research alleged fraud and stock market manipulation by Adani Group in a report published on 24 January 2023.
Jaypee Power Ventures considering sale of Nigrie grinding plant
12 December 2022India: Jaypee Power Ventures' board of directors met on 12 December 2022 to discuss the possible sale of the company's Nigrie grinding plant in Madhya Pradesh. Press Trust of India News has reported that parent company Jaiprakash Jaypee Group's audit committee recommended the sale under proposed measures to reduce the group's debt. The producer had been in talks with Adani Group about the possible sale of its cement business, along with other non-core assets, for US$606m in October 2022.
Jaypee Power Ventures operates 4Mt/yr-worth of cement capacity, 40% of Jaypee Group's total 10Mt/yr.
