Taiwan: Taiwan Cement plans to build 87.5MWh and 250MWh large-scale energy storage units at its integrated Suao and Hualien plants respectively. Once complete it will become the largest energy storage field in the country. The company will also install a 4MW solar plant at Hualien.

India: Udaipur Cement Work plans to increase its reliance on renewable power with the installation of a new 4.15MW solar power plant at its cement plant in Udaipur, Rajasthan. When operational, the installation will increase the Udaipur plant’s solar power capacity by 42% to 14.3MW. The producer says that its entire solar power apparatus will facilitate a reduction in CO2 emissions of 14,000t/yr. In the 2020 and 2021 financial years, the producer consumed 13,000MWh of solar power, reducing CO2 emissions by 10,000t.

India: Shree Cement has given details of its US$67.8m solar power plant project plans. Projects Tiger News has reported that the producer intends to install 106MW-worth of solar power capacity across several Indian cement plants before October 2022. The company expressed its commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and fossil fuel dependence.

India: Shree Cement is planning to launch three projects with a total value of US$646m. The Press Trust of India newspaper has reported that US$476m-worth of the sum will go towards establishing a new 3.8Mt/yr integrated cement plant at Nawalgarh in Rajasthan’s Jhunjhunu district. The producer will invest a further US$102m in establishing a grinding plant in Purulia district, West Bengal, to take advantage of ‘favourable’ demand. Lastly, it will invest US$68m in installing solar power plants at ‘various’ cement plants across India.

Shree Cement said “The company has committed to maximising the use of clean energy in its operations. Setting up of the above solar power plants will enhance the proportion of clean energy usage in the total energy consumption of the company.”

India: Dalmia Cement has signed three memoranda of understanding with the state government of Jharkhand. The memoranda provide that the Dalmia Bharat subsidiary will invest US$104m in expanding its cement operations in the state. The producer’s plans consist of a US$68.5m upgrade and capacity expansion to its Bokaro cement grinding plant. The project will increase the existing production line’s capacity to 3.7Mt/yr and add a new grinding line, bringing the total plant’s capacity to 6.3Mt/yr. In addition the cement producer will spend US$34m towards building a solar power plant and the remainder will be spent on setting up a waste management facility.

Spain: Construction work has started on 6.2MW solar plant that will supply electricity to Cementos Cosmos’ Toral de los Vados integrated plant in León. Commissioning is scheduled by February 2022. The photovoltaic plant will include over 11,400 solar panels in an area of around 10 hectares. It will meet 15% of the plant’s electricity demands. Spain-based solar specialist EIDF (Energía, Innovación y Desarrollo Fotovoltaico) is supplying the unit at a previously reported cost of Euro4m.

Spain: Acciona and Enagás-led consortium Power to Green Hydrogen Mallorca has begun the construction of one of two planned solar power plants at Cemex España’s Lloseta plant in Majorca. The first, 13,500MWh/yr, plant will consist of 16,600 solar panels. A second, 10,800MWh/yr plant consisting of 12,700 panels will subsequently bring the total power capacity to 24,300MWh/yr. This is enough to produce 300t/yr of green hydrogen for the Lloseta cement plant’s operations.

The project to develop a ‘renewable hydrogen ecosystem’ in Majorca currently has Euro10.0m-worth of funding. The consortium has agreed with local to sheep farmers to allow the latter to use the solar power plant sites for grazing after construction is finished.

India: Germany-based HeidelbergCement subsidiary HeidelbergCement India has secured 22GWh-worth of power from Lalganj Power. The energy company will source the electricity from its solar power plants. The deal is expected to reduce the company’s CO₂ emissions by 0.4Mt over the life of the contract.

Pakistan: Bestway Cement and Reon Energy have commissioned a 14.3MW captive solar power unit at the former’s integrated cement plant at Farooqia, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The unit is part of a 50MW project deal that is planned to install solar units at the cement producer’s plant at Farooqia, Chakwal, Kallar Kahar and Hattar, according to the Pakistan Observer newspaper. Energy generated at the new solar plant at Farooqia is expected to reduce energy costs and reduce reliance on the national electricity grid.

Spain: Cemex España reopened its Lloseta cement plant in Majorca in mid-April 2021. The unit will start by operating at a low production level until demand levels build, according to the El País newspaper. The plant intends to use alternative fuels such as biomass to reduce its CO₂ emissions. It is also working with the Power to Green Hydrogen Mallorca project to use ‘green’ hydrogen created partly using solar energy. The plant now employs 20 people, compared to 96 before its closure in January 2019.
