HeidelbergCement India grows sales and profits
12 February 2020India: HeidelbergCement India’s revenue grew by 4% year-on-year to US$221m in the nine months to 31 December 2019 from US$232m in the same period in 2018. Its sales volumes fell by 1.9% to 1.22Mt from 1.29Mt. Its net profit rose by 26% to US$22.4m from US$28.3m. The subsidiary of Germany’s HeidelbergCement said that, despite a fall in revenue in the quarter to 31 December 2019, a decrease in petcoke prices and an increase in power generation from waste heat recovery systems, had helped to keep costs under control.
The cement producer added that de-bottlenecking work at its grinding mills at Imlai in Madhya Pradesh and Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh is expected to be completed by the end of March 2020. Following completion of the project the company’s total cement grinding capacity will be 6.26Mt/yr.
Anhui Conch uses coronavirus closure for maintenance
11 February 2020China: Anhui Conch’s subsidiary China Cement Plant Company (CCPC) has made the best of the downtime necessitated by the coronavirus outbreak by carrying out necessary maintenance work on its integrated plant’s third line, including the installation of a new vertical roller mill. Anhui Conch says CCPC is undertaking the work with the greatest degree of care for the ‘prevention and control of new coronavirus cases.’
Japan: Equipment supplier Kawasaki has announced that its Vega class of boiler will be used in Taiheiyo Cement’s 8MW waste heat recovery (WHR) power plant at its 1.4Mt/yr integrated Saitama cement plant. Kawasaki says that the advantages of the Vega boiler are a compact design, a shorter installation time, a reduced induced draft (ID) fan power consumption and excellent dust-removal performance.
JK Cement records 130% year-on-year nine-month profit growth
10 February 2020India: JK Cement has announced a rise in total comprehensive profit (net of tax) over the nine months ended 31 December 2019 of 130% to US$56.2m from US$24.5m in the corresponding period of 2018. Revenues rose by 14% year-on-year to US$567m in the period from US$495m over the nine months to 31 December 2018.
On 3 February 2020 JK Cement commissioned a 1.5Mt/yr and a 1.0Mt/yr grinding unit at its Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, and Mangrol, Rajasthan, plants.
Sagar Cements increases January production by 4.7% year-on-year
06 February 2020India: Sagar Cement’s consolidated production volumes at its integrated 2.4Mt/yr Mattampally, Telangana, and 1.0Mt/yr Tadipatri, Andhra Pradesh, plants in January 2020 were 317,000t, up by 4.7% year-on-year from 303,000t in January 2019. Accord Fintech News has reported that consolidated sales in the period fell by 1.6% year-on-year to 315,000t from 320,000t in January 2019.
On 29 January 2020 the Indian Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change granted environmental clearance to Sagar Cements for and upgrade to all three dry lines of its 2.4Mt/yr Mattampally plant to raise its capacity to 5.0Mt/yr. Its clinker capacity will rise from 2.0Mt/yr to 4.8Mt/yr. The expansion also includes a 36MW coal-fired power plant and a 22MW waste heat recovery (WHR) power plant.
Akhangarantsement grows 2019 production by 16% year-on-year
05 February 2020Russia: Eurocement subsidiary Akhangarantsement produced 1.9Mt of cement in 2019, a rise of 16% year-on-year from 1.6Mt in 2018. The company attributed the growth to a programme of ‘modernisation of the equipment at the Akhangarantsement aimed at increasing productivity, energy efficiency and reliability of production,’ without any disruption to supply. Akhangarantsement general director Gennady Kulikov said, “The coordinated work of the entire team allowed us to fulfil the tasks assigned to the plant with honour.”
LafargeHolcim inaugurates FastCarb concrete carbonation
03 February 2020France: Following a successful trial that began in December 2019, LafargeHolcim has inaugurated a FastCarb CO2 absorption accelerator into concrete production at its Val d'Azergues cement and concrete plant (integrated capacity 0.4Mt/yr) in Lozanne. The technology involves the capture of CO2 from the plant’s cement kiln for reinjection into concrete produced with recycled aggregates. François Petry, LafargeHolcim France managing director, said the installation ‘fits perfectly into our Lafarge 360 approach for more responsible construction.’ The five-pillar approach consists of alternative fuel substitution and development, power consumption reduction, formulation of new cements, cooperation with Airium insulation solutions and assistance with low-carbon building design.
National Cement breaks ground on upgrade to Ragland plant
31 January 2020US: National Cement has broken ground on its US$250m upgrade to the Ragland plant in Alabama. City, county and state officials attended the ceremony, according to WBRC. The subsidiary of France’s Vicat is building a second kiln at its 1.9Mt/yr plant in Alabama. The project is expected to be completed in 2022.
Lucky Cement’s sales fall as energy costs mount
31 January 2020Pakistan: Lucky Cement’s sales and profits have fallen in the first half of its financial year as gas, fuel and transportation costs of input materials have risen. Its sales fell by 11% year-on-year to US$201m in the six months to 31 December 2019 from US$226m in the same period in 2018. Its cement sales volumes dropped by 9.5% to 3.17Mt from 3.50Mt. Its profit after taxation more than halved to US$12.5m from US$35.6m. It also blamed lower sales volumes on price pressure due to low demand and higher transport and logistics costs.
The cement producer started operating a 2.8Mt/yr upgrade to its Pezu plant in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at the end of December 2019. Construction work on a new 1.2Mt/yr plant in Samawah in Iraq is underway, with contracts in place for a cement grinding mill, packing plant and power generation unit. The new plant is expected to start commercial production in late 2020.
India: Ramco Cements’ profit in the three months to 31 December 2019 was US$13.3m, down by 6.3% year-on-year from US$14.2m. Revenues in the period rose by 5.3% to US$180m from US$171m. Sales volumes grew by 3.7% year-on-year to 28Mt from 27Mt.
A 100% capacity expansion of Ramco Cements’ 1.0Mt/yr Kolaghat grinding plant in West Bengal to 2.0Mt/yr, which begun in September 2019, is scheduled for completion in 2020.
