Global Cement and Concrete Association launches Innovandi Open Challenge 2025 for low-carbon concrete
21 February 2025Global: Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA) has launched the Innovandi Open Challenge 2025, inviting start-ups to wok together with cement manufacturers around the world in developing low carbon concrete technologies.
The Open Challenge is looking for start-ups working on next generation materials for net zero concrete, including low-carbon admixtures, supplementary cementitious materials, activators or binders. The challenge aims to find ways to reduce clinker use and incorporate new materials to lower CO₂ emissions.
The programme follows three previous Open Challenges.
Chief executive Thomas Guillot said "Advanced production methods which are decarbonising our sector are already being used in cement and concrete production in many parts of the world. Through the Innovandi Open Challenge, start-ups can bring in even newer ideas and further accelerate our industry's push."
“If you are a start-up from anywhere in the world with an innovative idea or technology, then we want to hear from you."
Start-ups can find more information and apply to take part in the Innovandi Open Challenge by going to the GCCA Open Challenge 4 webpage: Innovandi Open Challenge 4 : GCCA
Terra CO2 raises US$82m to scale sustainable cement technology
20 February 2025US: Terra CO2 has raised US$82m in Series B funding from investors including Eagle Materials, GenZero and Just Climate. The company will build its first commercial facility in Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas, in partnership with Asher Materials.
With the help of Eagle Materials, the company will establish multiple 240,000t/yr plants across North America. The US Department of Energy has also awarded Terra CO2 with a grant of US$52.6m for a second commercial facility. The producer has begun concrete trials of its Opus Zero cement-free product, designed to completely replace ordinary Portland cement in concrete. It will complete a second funding round in the first quarter of 2025.
“This strategic funding from the world’s leading climate funds and industry partners validates our approach to practical cement decarbonisation at commercial scale,” said Bill Yearsley, CEO of Terra. “As we break ground on our first full-scale plant in Texas, their support enables us to accelerate deployment across North America and establish an early footprint in Europe.”
Alpacem completes acquisition of Fanna cement plant
10 February 2025Italy: Alpacem Group has completed the acquisition of the Fanna cement plant in Pordenone and several concrete plants in the region, following regulatory approval on 1 February 2025. Over 80 employees will join the company’s workforce and Fanna will become the group’s third fully-integrated plant alongside its plants in Wietersdorf, Austria and Anhovo, Slovenia.
The Fanna plant has a clinker capacity of 0.66Mt/yr and sources raw materials from three nearby quarries.
Bernhard Auer, Alpacem’s managing director, said “The integration of the Fanna cement plant and the concrete mixing plants strengthens our presence in Italy and in the entire Alpe-Adria region, and enables us to expand our business activities in the market and grow as the Alpacem Group.”

05 February 2025Greece: Titan Cement Group says that it has accelerated its innovation strategy with new investments in cement-aligned start-ups. The producer has invested in AI-based industrial process optimiser developer Optimitive, in concrete design systems developer Concrete.ai, in demolition materials-based concrete developer C2CA Technology and in property technology investor Fifth Wall.
Cemvision deploys low-carbon cement at UK’s Sunbury STOREX site
22 January 2025UK: Cemvision has launched one of the UK’s first commercial applications of its low-carbon Re-ment cement technology at a STOREX self storage development in Sunbury, near London. The foundational slabs for the site employ Cemvision's Re-ment Massive product, which replaces traditional Portland cement. Recent laboratory tests have shown that the product achieves a 75% CO₂ reduction and a 28-day compressive strength, that reaches the C50/60 classification, compared to traditional Portland cement. STOREX and Cemvision have signed a Letter of Intent for further collaboration in the UK and other markets.
“This project is a landmark achievement for Cemvision as we bring the benefits of green cement to UK customers,” said Oscar Hållén, CEO of Cemvision.
Cemvision says that its Re-Ment Massive technology reaches different levels of CO₂ reduction depending on application and local conditions, with the product already having achieved more than a 95% reduction compared to Portland cement in demo production in the EU, according to the company.
Azerbaijan’s cement production rose in 2024
20 January 2025Azerbaijan: Cement production reached 4.03Mt in 2024, up by 1.6% year-on-year, according to the State Statistics Committee. The total value of the construction materials sector rose by 17% to US$823m. Production of bricks and similar products from cement and concrete increased by 41%, while cement clinker output grew by 16%.
France: Bouygues Construction and Ecocem have signed a partnership to facilitate the use of Ecocem’s low-carbon ACT cement technology in Bouygues Construction’s projects.
The collaboration involves three stages of testing and validation. First, Bouygues Construction will conduct independent laboratory tests to evaluate ACT’s performance. Next, structural concrete walls will be built at Bouygues Construction’s facilities in Chilly-Mazarin, France starting in early 2025, and monitored to ensure thorough testing. Finally, a full-scale mock-up, including all structural elements, will be constructed to assess the in-situ application of ACT technology. The testing programme aims to integrate ACT technology into Bouygues Construction projects following successful validation.
Al Jouf Cement’s ‘green’ cement approved for NEOM projects
02 January 2025Saudi Arabia: Al Jouf Cement's board of directors has approved the use of its 'green' cement for projects in the new NEOM city. The product was developed in collaboration with ready-mix concrete producer Asas Al-Muhailb, with Al Jouf Cement stating that it enhances concrete performance by improving durability and longevity, and reducing water absorption and permeability. It is reportedly resistance to sulphate and chloride salts, has ‘equal or greater’ compressive strength compared to ordinary Portland cement (OPC), and provides benefits in heat insulation and fire resistance.
Aggregate Industries builds inflatable silo at Port of Tilbury
05 December 2024UK: Aggregate Industries has built a 45m high and 32m diameter airform dome silo at the Port of Tilbury in Essex. The silo is part of its new cement import, manufacturing and distribution facility, which is under construction. The inflatable structure will store up to 30,000t of cement to support demand for construction materials in the region. Aggregate Industries worked with US-based Dome Technology to inflate the dome. Contractor Dome Technology will now apply nearly 4500m³ of sprayed and wet mix concrete to form the dome silo.
The cement facility is expected to be operational in 2026.
