Nigeria: Bauchi State Government, in partnership with Resident Cement, has commenced work on a US$1.5bn cement plant in Diji Village, Gwana District, Alkaleri Local Government Area, according to Arise News.
Resident Cement Group Chairman Abbas Junaid stated that limestone deposits in the area are sufficient to sustain a 10Mt/yr capacity plant for 100 years. The company has begun drilling and will deploy four rigs to complete the project within two months, with full construction of the plant to begin in three months.
US: Heidelberg Materials North America has begun test well drilling at its Mitchell cement plant in Indiana as part of the CarbonSAFE carbon capture and storage (CCS) project led by the Illinois State Geological Survey (ISGS).
The drilling started on 22 January 2025 to assess the geology beneath the plant, which is located in the Illinois Basin, for CO₂ storage potential. The test will evaluate three carbon storage formations to a depth of 2210m to determine if the site can safely store 50Mt of CO₂ over 30 years.
The project began in early 2023 with seismic data collection across 87km of roadways, leading to the installation of the geologic test well.
Greg Ronczka, vice president of Carbon Transport & Storage Development said "This is an exciting step for the project as we learn which potential formations may be suitable to permanently and safely store the CO₂. This knowledge will help us design the injection and observation well network and allow us to prepare a complete and accurate US Environmental Protection Agency Class VI permit application."
90% of exploration work completed at Jabal al-Saraj cement plant
29 January 2025Afghanistan: The Jabal al-Saraj cement plant project in Parwan province has completed 90% of initial exploration work, along with the drilling of 18 deep wells for mineral sampling, according to Tolo news.
The facility has been contracted between the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum and a Qatari firm, and is valued at US$220m.
Mohammad Idris Anwari, the governor of Parwan, said "The contracting company has completed 90% of the exploration work within six months, ahead of schedule. We are hopeful that the remaining construction and technical work will be completed within two years."
The plant will initially produce 3000t/day (0.96Mt/yr) of cement, rising to 9000t/day (2.9Mt/yr) in later phases. The project will reportedly create 5000 jobs.
CalPortland awarded equipment grant for Oro Grande cement plant
18 November 2019US: CalPortland has been awarded a US$175,000 grant from the Mojave Desert Air Quality Management District (MDAQMD) to replace a 1999 Terex Bore/Drill rig with a 2019 Caterpillar MD2650 drill. The new drill expects to see a 76% reduction on average in nitrogen oxides (NOx), reactive organic gases (ROG) and particulate matter (PM) combined. The grant comes from the Carl Moyer Program, which provides monetary grants to private companies and public agencies to clean up their heavy-duty engines beyond legal requirements through retrofitting, repowering or replacing their engines with newer and cleaner ones.
Continental conveyor belts used in Swedish road project
23 January 2019Sweden: Conveyor belts supplied by Germany’s Continental are being used in the Förbifart Stockholm road infrastructure project. HeidelbergCement’s aggregate company Jehander is using Continental steel cord conveyor belts at its Löten quarry near Stockholm to allow rubble from tunnelling to be reused for road construction. In addition, drilling machines from Epiroc are using Continental DrillMaster tyres to provide high cut resistance, good traction and stability.
Overall, around 5.5Mt of rock will be extracted to build the tunnels required for the new bypass. A series of conveyor belt systems are being used to transport the extracted rock to three temporary ports that have been set up for the project. The rubble is taken across the waterways by inland vessels from the construction site in Stockholm to Löten. The rubble is then reused as concrete, mostly for road construction, or it used for local construction.
