Ecocem opens Centre of Excellence in Paris
20 October 2021France: Ireland-based Ecocem has opened its new innovation centre, the Centre of Excellence, in Paris. The purpose of the facility is to help to accelerate the development of new technology for the decarbonisation of the cement and construction industries. Ecocem's innovation team will use it for industrial-scale trials in collaboration with industry and academic partners, including Paris-Saclay University and The University of Toulouse. It says that it hopes that one outcome will be the further developmentof the Ecocem reduced-CO2 product range. Breakthrough Energy Ventures provided funding towards the centre's construction.
Ecocem innovation director Laurent Frouin said “Ecocem is committed to the deep and rapid decarbonisation of the global cement industry. It is essential for the planet and future generations, and it can be achieved through innovation and technology." He added “The cement and construction industries are developing and deploying a range of emission reduction technologies – Ecocem and our new Centre of Excellence will add a further dimension to these efforts.”
Hoffmann Green Cement Technologies appoints Stéphanie Bondoux director of certification and accreditation
25 August 2021France: Hoffmann Green Cement Technologies has appointed Stéphanie Bondoux as its director of certification and accreditation. In her new role, Bondoux will help the company to comply with France’s technical norms and standard practices. In order to ensure that it continues to meet the highest industry standards, she will assess the performance, the sustainability of solutions and the safety of the various applications while fostering Hoffmann Green Cement Technologies’s policy of innovation. This will involve close collaboration with both the producer’s testing segment and accreditation bodies.
Bondoux was previously head of accreditations and regulatory frameworks for Liechtenstein-based building materials producer Hilti's Western Europe business, having begun her career as a fastening product manager there. She holds a master's degree in marketing from Sorbonne University, Paris.
Cementos Argos is Colombia’s fourth most innovative company
24 August 2020Colombia: The National Association of Entrepreneurs and Dinero Magazine have named Cementos Argos fourth among 242 of Colombia’s most innovative companies. Chief executive officer (CEO) Juan Esteban Calle said, “This recognition fills us with pride and motivates us to continue to advance. We are convinced that it is possible to help materialise more dreams of housing and a better infrastructure for millions of people.”
Cemex reports on sustainability steps taken in 2019
27 March 2020Mexico: Cemex has shared its 2019 sustainability achievements in an integrated report entitled ‘Innovating for a Better World,’ which analyses the company’s strategic vision, operational performance and corporate governance against its commitment to drive innovation in the cement sector. Throughout the year, the company introduced its new Climate Action strategy to reduce CO2 emissions by 35% by 2030 and established an ambition to deliver net-zero CO2 concrete by 2050. It achieved an alternative fuel substitution rate of 28%, its highest since 2014, bringing its net specific CO2 emissions per tonne of cementitious product to 624kg.
Cemex’s net income was US$179m in 2019, down by 69% year-on-year from US$570m in 2018. Its sales declined by 8%, to US$4.3bn from US$4.7bn
