Titan Group to build fly ash beneficiation facility

08 July 2025

UK: Titan Group will build and operate a processing and beneficiating facility for ponded fly ash at the former Fiddler’s Ferry power station in Warrington, following a long-term agreement with site owner Peel NRE. The plant will process 300,000t/yr of wet fly ash from 2027, with scope to double the capacity at a later date. Titan will use the material in low-carbon cement, while Peel NRE will receive help to advance restoration of the site. The ash will reportedly meet BS EN 450 quality standards.

Peel NRE director Kieran Tames said “We are very pleased to have reached this agreement with Titan, which follows years of hard work fully evaluating the potential to transform the waste ash material from the power station directly into a low-carbon construction product. This agreement has the potential to accelerate the recovery of waste ash from the lagoons, enabling their restoration and enhancement as envisaged by the development framework that was approved by the local authority last year. Through our partnership, existing customers will continue to source ash from the site, ensuring continuity of supply for their applications.”

Dabin cement plant and power station to open in Erbil

12 May 2025

Iraq: Kurdistan Region prime minister Masrour Barzani will inaugurate the Dabin cement plant and power station in Erbil Governorate today, 12 May 2025, according to Kurdistan24 news. The foundation stone was laid nearly two years ago, on 22 June 2023.

The project spans 212,000m² and was built by China Power Investment Corporation. It includes a 6300t/day capacity cement plant and a 52MW power station, intended to both support the energy needs of the plant and feed into the broader grid to alleviate strain on regional electricity supplies. A limestone quarry 1km away from the plant supplies the limestone for production, where geological surveys have reportedly confirmed reserves of 150Mt, sufficient to sustain operations for at least 50 years.

Raw material is transported to the plant using a 1400t/hr capacity industrial crusher. The processed material is stored in four 10,000t silos, each 18m in diameter and 56m tall.

PrJSC Kryvy Rih Cement to construct 24MW power generation facility

24 June 2024

Ukraine: PrJSC Kryvy Rih Cement, under the initiative of Concorde Capital founder Ihor Mazepa, will build a 24MW power generation facility to ensure continuous plant operations, according to Interfax Ukraine. The project will reportedly cost around US$15m, with a payback period of three to four years.

Ihor Mazepa posted on Facebook "This is a necessary measure to keep business from stopping. In general, I see the prospect of investing in energy projects. Therefore, in a short period we will build 40MW of storage capacity, which will balance the energy market. We see a good return on investment in the amount which can reach up to 30% depending on the market development scenario."

Japan Coal Energy Center, GreenOre Clean Tech and others sign deal on CO2 capture and utilisation project in Wyoming

22 July 2019

US: The Japan Coal Energy Center (JCOAL), GreenOre Clean Tech, Columbia University and Wyoming Infrastructure Authority (WIA) have entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to test carbon utilisation and recycling technology. GreenOre Clean Tech, using technology under license from Columbia University, will use testing space at the Integrated Test Center (ITC) near the Dry Fork Station coal-fired power station in Gillette, Wyoming. Calcium carbonate produced through CO2 mineralisation could then potentially be used for aggregates, concrete production or in paper production. The test will be funded by JCOAL with additional support from project partners.

The State of Wyoming and JCOAL have been working together since 2016, when they signed an initial MOU committing to cooperation in coal research and development of technologies and coal trade. JCOAL operates under the supervision of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan and is supported by more than 120 member coal-related businesses, including Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems, Nippon Steel and Toshiba. Kawasaki is scheduled to test its solid sorbent capture technology at the ITC beginning in 2021.
