India: JSW Cement plans to more than double its cement grinding capacity from 20.6Mt/yr to nearly 41Mt/yr. The expansion involves six new greenfield units in Rajasthan, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha and Maharashtra, and a brownfield unit in Vijayanagar; Karnataka, adding 20.25Mt/yr. The company also aims to increase its clinker production capacity from 6.44Mt/yr to 13.04Mt/yr. The new facilities in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh will each contribute 3.3Mt/yr to this expansion. In its offer document, JSW Cement stated that it sees potential in ‘green’ cement products like ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) and plans to expand its presence in northern and central India.

Kyrgyzstan: Starting on 1 October 2024, Kyrgyzstan will enforce a six-month road import ban on several types of cement including Portland cement, alumina cement and slag cement, according to Trend. The Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers, Akylbek Japarov, signed the decree affecting both ready and clinker forms of these cements. According to the State Statistical Committee of Kyrgyzstan, a 76% year-on-year increase in cement imports from January - May 2024 has been reported, totalling 125,737t. These imports are predominantly from Iran, Kazakhstan, China and Uzbekistan.

Vietnam: Taiwan has launched an anti-dumping investigation into cement and clinker imported from Vietnam. The Trade Remedies Authority of Vietnam announced that Taiwan's inquiry, initiated on 8 August 2024, focuses on cement and clinker with the import codes 2523.29.90.00.2 and 2523.10.90.00.3, requested by the Taiwan Cement Manufacturers Association. The investigation will assess imports from 1 July 2023 to 30 June 2024, targeting seven specific Vietnamese companies, among other exporters. The Vietnamese companies are mandatory respondents in this investigation and must engage fully by submitting the required information to the Ministry of Finance within the stipulated 20 days from initiation of the investigation.

South Korea: Ssangyong C&E has exported 30,000t of low-carbon limestone cement (Type IL) to the US, its first such shipment following three years of research and development, according to AJU News. The product reportedly has a reduced clinker content and maintains the same physical performance as general cement. The producer plans to export 200,000t to the US in 2024 and 600,000t in 2025.

A Ssangyong C&E official said "Currently, our country's national standards stipulate that mixed cement only uses slag, fly ash and pozzolan. In order to reduce carbon emissions in the future, conditions must be created where various types of eco-friendly cement, including limestone cement, can be used."

Nigeria: Dangote Cement has exported 14 shipments of clinker from Nigeria to Ghana and Cameroon as part of its strategy to boost foreign exchange inflows, reports Business Post Nigeria. The company reported that high demand for its products has ‘significantly’ increased its pan-African operations.

CEO Arvind Pathak said “This effort resulted in a 55% surge in our Nigerian exports, underscoring our commitment to fostering African self-sufficiency.”

Ukraine: Companies belonging to the Ukrcement association increased cement production by 24% year-on-year to 3.8Mt between January and June 2024, according to a press release.

Clinker production also rose by 13% year-on-year to 3Mt.

The statement said "Despite the enormous challenges of the war, the enterprises of the Association of Cement Producers of Ukraine Ukrcement continue to adapt to new realities and produce strategically important products – cement.”

Taiwan: Taiwan will initiate an anti-dumping investigation into cement and clinker imports from Vietnam in August 2024, according to the Trade Remedies Authority of Vietnam (TRAV) under the Ministry of Industry and Trade. The TRAV has advised the Vietnam Cement Association to inform its members and coordinate with Taiwanese importers for market monitoring, reports the Vietnam News Brief Service. Companies must provide export data from 2021 to mid-2024 by 12 August 2024.

Vietnamese cement and clinker exports have seen a decline in recent years. In 2023, exports fell to 31.3Mt, valued at US$1.32bn, down by 1.2% year-on-year. From January to July 2024, exports decreased further to 18.3Mt, worth US$705m, a decline of 1% compared to the same period in 2023. The VNCA forecast continued challenges for cement and clinker exports due to China’s stagnant real estate market and surplus cement production.

Australia: The new Geelong grinding plant, situated near Lascelles Wharf in Victoria, has commenced operations. It has the capacity to grind 1.3Mt/yr of granulated blast furnace slag and clinker. It will utilise slag to reduce landfill waste and substitute cement in concrete products. According to Boral’s post on LinkedIn, the plant will provide direct and indirect job opportunities to help boost the Geelong economy.

Catalonia: Cement consumption in Catalonia decreased by 3% year-on-year to 1.1Mt in the first half of 2024. Cement production rose by 0.2% year-on-year to 3.21Mt. However, cement and clinker exports dropped by 25% to 1.5Mt.

The president of Ciment Català, Salvador Fernández Capo, said "The continued infrastructure deficit is hindering Catalonia's economic growth, affecting the well-being and quality of life of its citizens and diminishing the competitiveness of the country's economy.”

Nepal: Exports of cement and clinker reached US$48bn in the 2024 financial year, tripling the figure from 2023, according to the Department of Customs. Exports of cement were US$23.5m, while clinker exports stood at US$22.5m.

This follows the government’s introduction of an 8% cash incentive for mine-based product exports and the identification of cement as a potential export item in the Nepal Trade Integration Strategy 2023. Policy changes, including tariff waivers on significant electricity usage by manufacturers, also contributed to this growth.
