Gebr. Pfeiffer provides update on modular mill for Petra Cement plant in the Philippines

Philippines: Germany-based Gebr. Pfeiffer says a ready2grind system it supplied to Petra Cement started in early December 2019. The clinker grinding mill is operational at a grinding plant on the Zamboanga Peninsula in Mindanao. No value for the order has been disclosed. Petra Cement’s sister company , Big Boss Cement, has also ordered a modular mill system from Gebr. Pfeiffer.

Vietnamese cement exports drop by 1.4% in first five months of 2020

25 June 2020

Vietnam: The Vietnam National Cement Corporation (VICEM) has reported that Vietnamese producers exported 13.6Mt of cement between 1 January 2020 and 31 May 2020, down by 1.4% year-on-year from 13.8Mt in the corresponding five months of 2019. Producers exported 7.07Mt of cement to China, up by 26% from 9.55Mt, 2.08Mt to the Philippines, down by 29% from 2.93Mt, and 1.36Mt to Bangladesh, down by 9.9% from 1.51Mt. The total value of exported cement fell by 14% to US$505m from US$590m.

New logistics chief and plant managers appointed at Holcim Philippines

Philippines: Holcim Philippines has appointed Edwin Villas as Senior Vice President Logistics, Bobby Garza as plant manager at its integrated Norzagaray cement plant and Arnold Pepino as Vice President of Operations of its integrated Lugait plant.

Villas was appointed as the Senior Vice President Logistics after serving as officer-in-charge of the department since 2019 concurrent to his role as Vice President for Sales for Greater Manila Region and South Luzon. He previously held senior sales leadership roles and served in procurement and internal audit. Villas is a certified professional for supply management, a certified information system auditor and holds a degree in computer science. He also completed a leadership program at the International Institute of Management Development (IMD) Switzerland.

Garza, Vice President for Operations of the Holcim’s Lugait, Misamis Oriental plant, will lead the Norzagaray, Bulacan plant. Garza is a licensed mining engineer and has attended leadership programs in IMD Switzerland.

Pepino, who was previously the Production Manager at Lugait, succeeds Garza as Vice President of Operations at the site. He started his career in Holcim Philippines as a cadet engineer in 1996. Over the years, he moved to different roles and projects in production, process and manufacturing excellence. In 2017, he was sent by LafargeHolcim Group to plants in Romania and Austria to learn best practices under its ‘Learning Across Borders’ program. Pepino holds a master’s degree in business administration and a computer engineering degree.

Holcim Philippines sustains customer service and engagement through digitisation

Philippines: LafargeHolcim subsidiary Holcim Philippines has said that digital innovations enabled it to continue serving its customer base throughout the coronavirus lockdown. The company said that utilisation of its customer service platform grew to 91% year-on-year in May 2020 from 56% in May 2019.

Through its information sharing platform E-Konekta, the company has hosted 40 events covering fields from Holcim Philippines’ corporate vision and health and safety to business networking. Holcim Philippines sales senior vice president William Sumalinog said, “Particularly in times of crisis, a customer’s interaction with a company can trigger an immediate and lingering effect on his or her sense of trust and loyalty. It is vital for us to keep our warm ties with customers so they continue to feel being part of the Holcim family.”

Eagle Cement partially resumes operations

Philippines: Eagle Cement has announced the start of reduced production and distribution of cement from its 7.1Mt/yr Bulacan plant following the partial easing of the coronavirus lockdown in the Philippines in May 2020. Eagle Cement president and chief executive officer (CEO) Paul Ang said, “We are starting to ramp up production as local demand for cement picks up following the easing of restriction in markets that we serve. We fully support the government's call to prioritise critical infrastructure projects to help reboot the economy. We hope to be able to safely return to a semblance of normality, mobilise our supply chains, create jobs and stimulate consumer spending.”

Eagle Cement continues community food support

Philippines: Eagle Cement says it will continue to provide food packages containing rice and tinned food to 18,000 families impacted upon by the coronavirus outbreak. The Manila Bulletin has reported that the provision will not end with the partial easing of the country’s lockdown but will continue until no longer needed.

Eagle Cement chairman Ramón Ang said, “Eagle Cement is committed to continue helping our partner communities where we operate, during the crisis and beyond. We were able to expand the reach of our relief operations and extend assistance to more people in need including front liners in Bulacan and to families in our community in Cebu,” where the company is planning to build a new integrated cement plant.

"The livelihoods of many residents of our communities have been affected by this pandemic and do not have the means to provide for their families. We hope that our relief operations are able to help them in addressing their crucial needs during this vulnerable time. No matter what crisis our fellow Filipinos may experience, they can rely on Eagle to support them. As a company, it is our duty to help and serve," said Ang.

Big Boss Cement orders Gebr. Pfeiffer ready2grind vertical roller mill

Philippines: Gebr. Pfeiffer has received an order for a modular four-roller ready2grind 2500 vertical grinding unit to Big Boss Cement’s Porac, Pampanga plant. It says that the mill will have a production capacity of 70t/hr of cement, ground to a fineness of 4000cm2/g. The company will additionally supply a packing plant module for bag and bulk loading.

Gebr. Pfeiffer said that in spite of delays to the unit’s commissioning due to coronavirus lockdown, it “has experienced specialists on site and is therefore able to support the customer in this phase.”

Holcim Philippines restarts production at Bulacan, Davao and La Union cement plants

Philippines: Holcim Philippines has announced its full return to cement production across all integrated plants after it resumed operations at its 3.3Mt/yr Bulacan, Norzagaray plant, 2.1Mt/yr Davao, Ilang plant and 1.2Mt/yr La Union, Bacnotan plant. The company’s 1.8Mt/yr Lugait, Misamis Oriental plant remained open throughout the coronavirus lockdown. It says that it started to reopen plants and terminals from mid-March 2020 after national and local governments began to ease the lockdown.

Holcim Philippines president and chief executive officer (CEO) John Stull said, “We are ready to continue supporting our partners nationwide as they build important structures and contribute to reinvigorating the economy. Holcim Philippines is determined to ensure the wellbeing of our people, communities and business partners in our operations consistent with our core value of health and safety. Our company is also ready to share our expertise on this area to government and private sector partners to further contribute to the recovery efforts.”

Vietnamese cement exports fall by 9.7% in first quarter of 2020

Vietnam: Data from the General Department of Vietnam Customs shows that cement exports fell by 9.7% year-on-year to 7.73Mt in the first quarter of 2020. The value of these exports declined by 17.4% to US$301m, according to the Viet Nam News newspaper. Exports to China dropped by 5.4% to 2.73Mt, exports to the Philippines dropped by 27.5% to 1.47Mt, exports to Bangladesh dropped by 5.5% to 1.34Mt and exports to Taiwan dropped by 7% to 0.46Mt.

LafargeHolcim and San Miguel Corporation’s Holcim Philippines deal falls through

11 May 2020

Philippines: LafargeHolcim’s sale of its 86% stake in Holcim Philippines to San Miguel Corporation for US$2.15bn has fallen through after the Philippines Competition Authority (PCC) failed to approve the deal within 12 months of its conclusion. Reuters News has reported that the agreement, dated 10 May 2020, covered the exchange of four integrated plants and one grinding plant. LafargeHolcim has been divesting assets to pay off debt. The sale of its Holcim Philippines stake would have completed its withdrawal from the South-East Asia market, where its operations across Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines had been valued at US$4.90bn.

LafargeHolcim has said that three of its four integrated Philippines cement plants have been able to resume operations following the lockdown due to the coronavirus outbreak. It says that it will ‘focus on strengthening operations in the Philippines.’
