Ecocem secures US ASTM C1157 certification for low-CO₂ cement

13 August 2025

US: Ecocem has obtained ASTM C1157 certification for its ACT low-CO₂ cement technology, confirming it meets or exceeds strength and durability benchmarks while reducing emissions and energy use. Unlike traditional cement specifications, the standard is performance-based, allowing for innovative formulations.

Founder and group managing director Donal O’Riain said “This is a significant moment for Ecocem and for low-carbon cement globally. Over the past 10 years our solutions have seen significant traction across Europe. The US is one of the largest cement markets in the world, and this certification will support integration into existing supply chains and offers a pathway for the sector to rapidly decarbonise through improved efficiency and without increasing costs or complexity.”

Ecocem is advancing its first North American project, a proposed terminal and milling operation at the Port of Los Angeles, aimed at establishing a reliable low-CO₂ cement supply chain in California. The company says that its low-carbon cement technology, ACT, cuts clinker content by up to 70% by using limestone and locally-sourced supplementary cementitious materials. The announcement follows recent regulatory approvals in France, new investment in production lines in Dunkirk, and partnerships with Bouygues, Vinci and Titan Group.

Hoffmann Green's H-UKR 0% clinker cement certified in US

15 July 2025

US: Hoffmann Green Cement Technologies has obtained ASTM C1157 certification for its H-UKR 0% clinker cement after several months of testing and trials at the University of Miami.

The benchmark standard evaluates cements on their performance, regardless of their composition. H-UKR cement is now officially recognised as a hydraulic cement that can be used in all general construction applications, whether structural or non-structural. Hoffmann Green said that this is the first time that a 0% clinker cement has obtained this certification.

Co-founders Julien Blanchard and David Hoffmann said “This international technical recognition marks a decisive step forward in our certification process, which is part of a broader ambition to expand the applications of our 0% clinker cement through continuous innovation. It validates the reliability and sustainability of our technology on a global scale, in accordance with the most demanding standards. With this certification, H-UKR has confirmed itself as a game changer technology capable of profoundly transforming an industry that has remained unchanged for more than two centuries.”

Ecocem obtains technical endorsement for ACT1 cement technology in France

19 June 2025

France: Ireland-based Ecocem has obtained a Technical Evaluation of Products and Materials (ETPM) from the Centre Scientifique et Technique du Bâtiment (CSTB) for ACT1, the first iteration of its low-carbon cement technology. The ETPM certifies the mechanical performance and durability of concrete made with ACT1, confirming its compliance with European structural design codes.

The ETPM will support Ecocem’s planned submission for an Appréciation Technique d’Expérimentation (ATEx) in the second half of 2025, which will assess the use of ACT1 in structural applications such as walls, beams and foundations.

Director of product development and standardisation Christian Clergue said “To guarantee the swift deployment of our ACT technology in the French market, it was essential that Ecocem opted for the most relevant national technical assessments. This assessment provides clear evidence of ACT1’s workability, durability, safety and strength, demonstrating it is safe to use across the construction ecosystem.”

Ecocem received a European Technical Evaluation (ETE) for ACT in early 2024. Further iterations of ACT will be subject to similar assessments in France and the EU.

Bahrain tightens cement trade regulation

22 April 2025

Bahrain: New rules have placed strict demands on local producers and importers. A regulation signed by Industry and Commerce Minister Abdulla bin Adel Fakhro requires all cement sold in Bahrain to meet BS EN 197-1 and GSO ASTM C150 standards and be circulated with a conformity certificate from the Bahrain Standards and Metrology Directorate. News of Bahrain has reported that there will be regular laboratory testing, specific storage and transport conditions, and penalties for non-compliance. The move reportedly marks a push to raise the standard of construction materials.

Toral de los Vados cement plant renews Emas System environmental certification

12 September 2024

Spain: The regional government's Ministry of Development and Environment has renewed the Emas System for environmental management at the Toral de los Vados cement plant. Initially joining the Emas system in 2018 along with 30 other companies in the region, now only 17 maintain the certification. To maintain this voluntary certification, the plant must establish yearly environmental objectives, demonstrate its commitment to achieving them and assume a commitment to continuous improvement, verified through independent audits.

Director of the cement plant Jaime Santoalla said "This certification is an endorsement of the efforts we make in terms of sustainability, as well as our commitment to the environment. We are very proud to have celebrated 100 years in the region with the aim of becoming more sustainable every day and reducing our environmental footprint."

103 US manufacturing plants earn Energy Star certification in 2023

15 March 2024

US: On March 14, 2024, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) acknowledged 103 manufacturing plants for achieving Energy Star certification in 2023, a prestigious recognition for being in the top 25% of energy efficiency in their respective sectors. These plants collectively prevented over 8Mt of CO2 emissions. Out of the 103, 11 were cement plants.

EPA Administrator Michael S Regan said “These Energy Star certified plants demonstrate that cutting the embodied carbon of our industrial products through energy efficiency doesn’t just make environmental sense, it makes economic sense.”

The industrial sector, responsible for 30% of US greenhouse gas emissions, mainly due to energy consumption in manufacturing, has seen significant improvements in these Energy Star certified plants. These facilities assess their energy performance using EPA’s energy performance indicators or the Solomon Associates Energy Intensity Index for petroleum refineries. Plants scoring at least 75 out of 100, thereby exceeding the energy efficiency of 75% of similar facilities nationwide, are eligible for this certification. Available across 21 manufacturing sectors, including cement, steel, glass, and commercial bakeries, Energy Star certification has been awarded to over 270 plants since 2006, reflecting the growing trend of energy-efficient practices in the manufacturing industry.
