Holcim acquires Sivyer Logistics
06 April 2023UK: Holcim has acquired leading London construction and demolition waste (CDW) recycling company Sivyer Logistics. Sivyer Logistics produced 500,000t of recycled aggregates and manufactured soils from 1Mt of CDW across its six sites in 2022. Holcim says that the acquisition represents a step towards realising its target of 10Mt/yr of construction and demolition waste in Holcim products by 2025.
The group’s Europe regional head Miljan Gutovic said “Sivyer Logistics is an excellent addition to help us drive circular construction.” He added “I look forward to welcoming all employees of Sivyer Logistics and investing in our next era of growth together.”
Doppelmayr Transport Technology supplies RopeCon ropeway conveyor for Aggregate Industries' Bardon Hill quarry restoration
10 August 2022UK: Doppelmayr Transport Technology says that a 1000t/hr RopeCon ropeway conveying system is in operation at Aggregate Industries' Bardon Hill quarry in Leicestershire. Doppelmayr Transport Technology supplied the equipment to help move overburden from a new quarry extension for emplacement in an area where mining has finished. The total 600m-long system consists of one 500m section and one 100m section.
UK: Aggregate Industries and Coomtech have partnered to develop low-energy kinetic drying technology for pulverised fuel ash (PFA) from power plant. The partnership will see Aggregate Industries use Coomtech’s kinetic dryers in its PFA processing, as part of its effort towards increasing the volume of waste materials incorporated in its products to 3Mt/yr from 1.5Mt/yr by 2025. The project has attracted funding from the UK government Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS).

UK: Holcim subsidiary Aggregate Industries has invested in a new monitoring system from Envirosuite for its Cauldon cement plant in Staffordshire. Called EVS Omnis, the cloud-based environmental management software will collate complex environmental information from surrounding sites outside the plant to facilitate proactive monitoring and management of its impacts. The producer expects to commission the system later in 2022.
Sustainability director Kirstin McCarthy said “Understanding the environment we operate in and the impact we’re having is integral to our business strategy and our commitment to building progress towards a more sustainable construction industry. We know that noise and dust can have an impact on surrounding communities, which is why we’re extremely proud to become the first cement plant in the world to commit to using a complete monitoring solution. EVS Omnis will allow us to continuously monitor at key community locations, 365 days a year. This will help us to not only better understand our operations within the local community but also give us insights into our processes to proactively manage them.”
Aggregate Industries commissions Innovatium PRISMA liquid air energy storage system at Cauldon cement plant
04 May 2022UK: Aggregate Industries’ Cauldon cement plant in Staffordshire has become the first industrial facility to operate a PRISMA liquid air energy storage system. Green technology developer Innovatium developed the product in collaboration with the University of Birmingham. The supplier says that it can deliver 25% energy savings for air compression and will help Aggregate Industries to realise its 2030 goal of 500kg/t of CO2 emissions for its cementitious products.
Aggregate Industries sustainability director Kirstin McCarthy said “We are very proud to be the first partner to install the PRISMA system in an operational environment. Aggregate Industries is committed to transitioning to net zero, and supporting innovations like PRISMA is vital in helping us achieve that goal. McCarthy continued “We believe PRISMA can play a major role in addressing the ‘energy trilemma’ of managing energy efficiency, energy cost and energy security, and we're confident that its installation at Cauldon will further prove its decarbonisation credentials - a big step towards full commercialisation of the technology.”
UK: Aggregate Industries has appointed Kirstin McCarthy as its sustainability director as part of its executive committee. She will be responsible for the company’s ambitions to become a leading sustainable business and net-zero company. McCarthy brings over 20 years’ experience in environmental management to the role. Prior to joining the subsidiary of Switzerland-based Lafarge-Holcim business, she was Head of Sustainability at Birmingham Airport for more than six years.
UK: Aggregate Industries has appointed Dragan Maksimovic as its chief executive officer (CEO). He succeeds Guy Edwards, who is leaving the company.
Maksimovic joins the subsidiary of LafargeHolcim from Sika, where he worked most recently as Country CEO in the UK. He holds an MBA from the University of Sheffield and a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. He has also completed an International Leadership Program at IMD in Switzerland.
Aggregate Industries to sell new Lafarge bagged cement and concretes
05 November 2020UK: LafargeHolcim subsidiary Aggregate Industries has launched three Lafarge branded packed cement and concrete products: High Performance Concrete; Instant Concrete; and Premium Cement. The company says that the products are “a response to rising demand from merchants and their customers alike to offer more specialised packed cement solutions,” and are suited to various domestic applications.
Product manager Lee Dunderdale said, “Through our on-going engagement with builders and builders’ merchants in the UK, we’ve had growing calls to offer more specialised solutions which offer the level of superior quality our brand has become known for. As such, we’ve invested heavily in creating these additional three products, which have been purposely manufactured to provide our customers with an incredibly easy, quick and exceptional quality cement solution for a range of typical applications. We believe that these new additions - alongside our well-established packed cement range - will see us continue in our position as the one-stop-shop provider for cement product excellence here in the UK. “We’d encourage all merchants and their customers to make use of these high-quality products, which will no doubt enable even greater ease of use and convenience for busy builders and DIYers.”
Aggregate Industries receives ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems certification
16 July 2020UK: The British Standards Institution (BSI) has granted LafargeHolcim subsidiary Aggregate Industries the ISO 45001 Standard in Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems for its reduction of workplace risks and support of health and wellbeing at the work. Company health and safety director Mike Belson said, “Achieving this certification gives us a great sense of pride as it further shows our commitment to putting health and safety first in all that we do as an organisation. We are proud to have a strong health and safety culture, whereby our employees are encouraged to take an active role in their own operational health and safety.”
John Mulgrew appointed as plant manager at Lafarge Cement’s Cookstown Plant in Northern Ireland
17 June 2020UK: Lafarge Cement, part of Aggregate Industries and LafargeHolcim, has appointed John Mulgrew as the new plant manager of its Cookstown integrated cement plant in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. He succeeds Russell Larmour who is to retire after 40 years within the company. Mulgrew will report to Barry Hope, Head of Cement on the Executive Committee at Aggregate Industries.
Mulgrew joined the LafargeHolcim Group as a quality co-ordinator in 2001, holding almost 20 years of experience in the cement industry. He became production manager at the Cookstown plant in 2016. The company says that the plant achieved its best results to date in 2019 after being ranked in the top 10 of LafargeHolcim’s European cement plants when evaluated against industrial benchmarks.
Jason Bowman will succeed Mulgrew as the new production manager at the plant. He has been promoted from his current role as manufacturing manager at Cookstown.
